It seems they've already flown most of the way:

They are now heading towards Barneo base somewhere around 89' north. From there they will ski with laden sleds across the frozen Arctic ocean to the north pole.

Yes, an Umiak could make this trip easily, especially if they go straight North up the lead following 84 E longitude (the geographic N Pole is at the upper left of this MODIS image).



Oh, and bring extra Inuit dogs. Might get hungry later.
