BFTV, are you talking of the average for the last 5-day-period? It seems to me that the slower rate of refreeze in the 81-10-period is because the rate of refreeze is slowing down as the extent grows. In the latest years (including 2015) the extent is lower and the rate of refreeze still higher, at this point.
From the posts earlier in the thread, it seems to me that the curves are converging somewhat in Mid-November. 2015 is heading "up" towards many of the earlier years, but still being among a cluster of recent years, a little below "the pack".
It would be interesting if Espen could include some more years like the earlier posts, at least for one day, to get the broader picture.

Yeah, you're right, and using the NSIDC extent for comparison. It's typical for the years to start grouping together during October and November. Below is a graph, using the NSIDC single day extent, of the difference between the max and min extent during the year.

A "power dive" from 2-3 days of below-average refreeze?  Take a step back and stop looking at stuff on less than a 5-day timescale.  Day to day wiggles are just noise.  Refreeze has been running almost exactly parallel to the 2000s average since the 18th of October.

Cheers for all the updates Espen.

In recent days, the extent values have dropped from 8th lowest to 4th lowest, and have remained essentially unchanged since the 16th. If this continues, we could be down to 2nd lowest in as little as 3 days.

With the storms and warm weather tearing up the ice on the Atlantic side and the now routine warm Alaskan winter, we may just catch up to 2010.

It will be interesting when it does update.  NSIDC is already showing 2016 as the lowest extent on the Charctic graph.

Where the ice is now.....combined with the much higher than normal temps in the Arctic above 80 degrees north.....the ice looks to be "in trouble" (to say the least).

Will be interesting to see the date of "peak ice".  If it's early again this year (February)...the record low is definitely in reach.

Remember....we're on this "train ride" that will CONTINUE to go into "uncharted waters" for decades to come.  An early ice max.....a couple nasty storms in the summer.....and "poof", most of the ice is either "gone" or broken to smithereens.

Things are "lining up".....and NOT in a good way.
