Cryosphere Today 2014 Arctic SIA daily minimum: August poll
« on: August 08, 2014, 12:19:12 AM »
ATTENTION: There are two polls on the ASIF. One is for NSIDC sea ice extent monthly/September average minimum, the other is for Cryosphere Today sea ice area daily minimum. Make sure you are aware of the difference before voting. You can discuss various extent/area data sets in this dedicated thread.

-----

This CT SIA poll will run for 8 days (until August 15th). Until then you can change your vote. This is the last poll for this melting season.

Here's how things are currently looking based on data up to August 5th:

These are the daily minimums for the last 7 years (in millions km2):

    2005: 4.092
    2006: 4.030
    2007: 2.919
    2008: 3.004
    2009: 3.425
    2010: 3.072
    2011: 2.905
    2012: 2.234
    2013: 3.554

The average for the June poll was 2.75 million km2.

The average for the July poll was 2.86 million km2.

You can use the comment thread below to motivate your choice, but discuss various SIE/SIA data sets in this dedicated thread.

In both previous polls my vote was: Between 3.0 and 3.25 million km2

But given the very chaotic behaviour of area this year, I'll go one bin up. I'd probably should go two bins up, as 2014 is behind 2013, but I'll take a gamble on recent events and the current weather forecast: Between 3.25 and 3.5 million km2

I've been consistently  low because of the amount  off thin ice I  expected at this time of the year.  However because of the slow melt  in July  I  have come up several notches to 3.0 - 3.25.  There is still  clearly a lot  of thin ice out there and  even a week conducive to melting could see a rapid decline.
Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore
