Giesecke Isfjord / Ussing Isfjord / North West Greenland
« on: August 23, 2015, 10:02:39 AM »
A "new" more or less google-unknown glacier is born (they can still be found).
This time it is Giesecke Isfjord a bit north of the more famed Upernavik Isstrøm.
Giesecke Isfjord is named after the German mineralogist Karl Ludwig Giesecke who worked for the Danish king in Greenland from 1806 to 1813 https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Ludwig_Giesecke.
The reason I will draw your attention to this glacier is:

1. As almost all west coast glaciers it is retreating and thinning.

2. It will soon change form and direction (the ice bridge between the glacier and island will soon collapse) .

3. A few new islands are born due to retreat.

4. The inserted image of Jakobshavn in the lower left corner is for size comparison.

A little north of Giesecke Isfjord is Ussing Isfjord *) which also consist of 2 outlet glaciers called Ussing  Bræer, the retreat in the period 1989 to 2015 is not dramatic, but thinning is clearly seen (growing rocks).

*) probably named after Niels Viggo Ussing a Danish mineralogist who worked in Greenland.

A new island was released recently from the Ice Sheet, inside Giesecke Isfjord in front of the large glacier that is part of the Giesecke Bræer: Click on image to animate

Another interesting place is the Giesecke Isfjord glacier system, called Giesecke Bræer. The main glacier retreated substantially in the period 1974 - 2020 (46 years), and in same proces gave birth to at least  3 islands, the latest one in 2016 (see above), my guess is there are several islands more to come now covered with ice inside the main glacier.

Giesecke Isbræer:
Reshaping a glacier and the delivery and release of 5 new islands in the process and more to come!
The retreat of the main glacier is very similar to the area lost creating the southern branch of Jakobshavn Isbræ.

Comparing Giesecke Main to Jakobshavn Southern Branch, it is not a smal glacier:

Giesecke Isbræer:
A big reshape is taking place at Giesecke Isfjord watch what happened to the glacier during only 1 year, and look above to find out how it looked (retreated) not that many years ago.
