Last winter the Nares arch formed and held in December, while the winter previous it did so in early February after several failed attempts.
Its breaking is in June-July, this year was typical.

Tor and oren, thank you.  This is my first freezing season, and since all the good folks here have got me hooked on the melt, I want to know what to look for as the freeze arrives.  :D  I will certainly check out the reference from Neven.

Cate, you're welcome, glad you are expanding your horizons.
Bear in mind that sometimes the best reference is simply going over older posts in this forum.
There is a Nares Strait thread where you can speed-scroll and see the images and animations over the course of the past 3.5 years. It's not "scientific" but it gives you real-life information.
