But that perspective changed after the addition of today's data:

So, do we call a sharp upward movement an inselberg or monadnock?

If I would have chosen another year (earlier) it would have been 2006. But right now it tracks 2011 nicely.

Using the average of the past ten days of ice loss (70124 km² per day):

July 27: 6 753 717 km²
August 1: 6 403 097 km²
August 15: 5 631 733 km²
August 31: 4 229 253 km²

Using the average of the past four days of ice loss as they have been remarkably similar (78564 km² per day):

July 27: 6 753 717 km²
August 1: 6 360 897 km²
August 15: 5 261 001 km²
August 31: 4 003 977 km²

Using a linearly declining average, from the past ten days, with 1500km² less loss per day (starting at 70124km²):

July 27: 6 753 717 km²
August 1: 6 418 097 km²
August 15: 5 677 861 km²
August 31: 5 191 877 km²

Using a linearly declining average, from the past four days, with 1500km² less loss per day (starting at 78564km²):

July 27: 6 753 717 km²
August 1: 6 375 897 km²
August 15: 5 517 501 km²
August 31: 4 896 477 km²

To obtain an Arctic with less than 1 million km² of ice left, assuming that a lower minimum will occur later, an average loss of 99 203 km² is required every day until September 23. (latest minimum on record)

I wonder if, seeing as this subject heading was created by Espen, that it would be courteous to allow him to post his graphs before commenting. I know many of you who post to this subject are eager to add your tuppenceworth but let's not get into a competition to find who can be the first to post.

I agree with waiting for Espen to post up the daily extent graph before posting up the extent number. Espen is very prompt and extremely diligent and reliable in doing so. I suggest we honor that.

2016 remains in 4th position overall. It has been out of the top 3 for eight days now, the longest such streak of the year by far. Nevertheless, 2016 has already beaten the minimums for every individual year of the 1980s, as well as 1992, 1994, and 1996.

Sorry for being late and sleepy posting that this morning, had to drive my youngest daughter to the emergency last night. And there's no childish competiton going on as suggested by marktime above, I'm just awake early.

Apart from my speculations about a coming slow down in May, I'm primarily following up on a study I posted in the El Nino, this and the home brew thread(s) in June. Those three threads are also the ones I've been following regularly since early 2014.

I would be surprised if Espen get's disturbed by me posting the daily drops for a little while, since that was a regular part of his own earlier posts. But I will honor what Espen thinks and also Neven, of course.

And as you all can see in the suggestions thread I would welcome to see number threads like this to be free of ALL OT commentary. No response there but it doesn't really matter to me. It's not my forum, it's not my thread and even if it I started the thread and posted daily updates, I still wouldn't consider it mine.
OT and out.

Edit; Neven just posted, I will stop now.

Personally, doing the math was becoming problematic as there were so many posts between yesterdays and the current days Espen info so Sleepy's numbers cut that palaver out?

I'm ever so grateful for Espen's efforts over the years but I had no problem with sleepy adding in the numbers ( before or after) as it saved me a struggle?

I'll second Gray-wolf. It is a very simple calculation, but it conveys a lot of useful information, at least for me. Now I'll have to go back to scrolling a bit and make the operation myself. Thank you for saving me a few seconds sleepy.

Yeah, slightly larger than previous.

Early mornings here in Sweden during summer are truly wonderful. Today +8°C, dead silent and blue skies with the sun coming up. Attaching a picture from June 25:th at midnight. Unfortunately my real camera was drained so it's taken with a stupid smart phone.

That would be much more informative than simply reporting the IJIS numbers we can all look up at the JAXA site.
Thanks !

Either that or do it yourselves. Engage into some heavy scrollwheel action to get past the OT commentary above (including my own this morning) to Espens latest graph, or download the spreadsheet at ADS, or visit the area and extent thread as Neven recommended above where Michael Hauber posted it this morning.

Meanwhile I also noticed that I now have been honoured with a thread with my moniker on it. :)
Now, I can laugh at my own expense, but isn't this really too much kindergarten for a forum like this? Neven?

I rarely have time to visit here during daytime, but did so now to see wether Espen commented on the recent discussions. But he didn't, so the object of everyone's concern might not be offended at all.

C'mon guys, it wasn't a moan, it was about courtesy. Sleepy's calcs are really useful and have a place in this thread. Immediately after Espen's post would be fantastic. As for whipper-snappers, having been born in 1938 it makes me happy to be called that again!  :)

Did you also adjust your graph?
I'm getting a bit excited by the reappearance of century breaks and think that the '16 line should be heading right at the bumps in those for '12 and '07 by now...

ADS/IJIS did not adjust the graph on the time that Espen made his post. Now it has been updated. One interesting thing, looking at the graph that has all the years since 2000, is that 2016 is only 10K of 2011 and 2011 is going to drop only 20K between today and tomorrow, so with a drop of 30k+ tomorrow, 2016 will become third lowest (after 2012 and 2007).

Edit: Thanks Espen for all the work that you have been doing in this 3+ years on this topic. I don´t think that you should carry all the weight of reporting IJIS, but certainly I thank you and everybody else, for the work on this Forum all these years.

I have learned a lot on this Forum and in Neven's Blog.  :)

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.
