That was the shortest quiz so far on the ASIF (Arctic Sea Ice Forum)!

I'm changing my avatar to the old one, as it blends in better.

Wait, I'm channeling my friends over at WUWT... Channeling... Channeling...

The name is SUB and it was taken at the South Pole in 1947!

Hence: AGW is a SCOAX!

I think I can place the shot as in my Bath, September 1974??? ( Two submerged divers lurk below the sponge behind the sub)

To clear up confusion, this was taken at the North Pole, a couple of hours after the other famous shot of her. In between the two shots, they cremated Hubert Wilkins on the ice, intending to scatter his ashes afterwards.

"Ah, Chief? We seem to have made a bit of a mess..."

Bahaha! ::) "Ah, no." This is the US Navy photo of USS Skate (SSN-578) taken August 1958 (possibly in port at Bergen, Norway).

Skate did not surface at the North Pole until March 17, 1959 which is before the end of the 6-month Polar night. So we can be certain that no daylight picture is of that event.

BTW, Wilkins was cremated beforeafter his death on Nov 31, 1958, and his ASHES were transported to the pole aboard Skate for the ceremony (although surely the on-board reactor would serve as a crematorium?). :o

Then, in a dramatic voyage in Fall 1959, Skate returned to her home base in Cloud Cuckoo Land for knuckler refooling...

Part-marks only, I'm afraid mate!  ;D

The US Navy pioneered several discoveries through it's voyages to the North Pole:
  • Don't go skating without a gun
  • Polar bears will eat anything
  • Including Submaries

The crew of the Skate were uncertain as to the optimal position for the pyre . . .

sorry, can't resist this newfound power of posting images.

NO, you're TOO RIGHT, Stuart! They were definitely SKATING on thin ice.  :D

And from the looks of that azure blue sky, there must have been good daylight at the North Pole on March 17, 1959...

I blame the Sun.  :P

I guess it must have been at the time of one of those solar maximums . . .

We seem to be engaged in cutting-edge work - a note to Nature, perhaps? Or is this still classified?

Oh quite, and it will soon be published in that prestigious urinal, WTFUWT.

Now understand this work IS still classified, but we can for the fist time publicly release the name of the Working Group:

W.O.R.S.T. -- Wishful-Over-Real Surface Temperatures

Danke.
Cheers!

I don't feel comfortable with this  Can the W.O.R.S.T committee rely on our 50,000 reviewers?  Are our email servers secure?  Can we be certain this won't leak?  These days the enemy might even reach the pole . . .
