Greenhouse Earth Day
« on: April 22, 2013, 07:56:42 AM »
Hi folks,

Yet another Earth Day has arrived (#44 & counting), and we're no closer to an International agreement on climate change. Joe Romm has updated his 2008 post about this outdated 1970s concept. Going forward, he thinks we should call it "Triage Day".  ???

My reply is simple, even obvious: let's call it “Greenhouse Earth Day” because that's what we're creating. Set aside 1 day each year to pause, recognize and grieve for all the lives lost and the suffering inflicted by the droughts, hurricanes, storm surges, and resource wars of the previous calendar year… then go out and piss carbon into the atmosphere like madmen the rest of the year.  >:(

“Greenhouse Earth Day”. Sponsored by the crowd that tried to kill Sesame Street. Brought to you by the letters C+O and the number 2.

So I ask you, is it finally time to rename Earth Day? If so, then what do we call it, and why?

If you have a spare hour, a new documentary 'Thin Ice' is available for streaming today and tomorrow only from their website http://thiniceclimate.org/. Its being released in cinemas but has been made available for earth day (or whatever else we would like to call it!)

Well worth a look, an accessible rebuttal of deniers, with a lot of interviews with climate scientists looking at changes already being seen and what could happen in the future.

Old Earth Day is for us like a holiday, except that people have to work. So, we have one day (1) to think about possible consequences of what we do the rest of a year.
Many countries have Independence Day as National Holiday, mine included.

How about (Earth) Dependence Day ?

Why not an "Unearth day" or a "non earth day", the rest of the year would be for the earth ! :)

As humanity continues to sleep walk toward, perhaps over, the climate cliff it is very likely we'll see regional breakdown of organized society. Each region will suffer different effects of climate change with some wetter, some dryer, some prone to salt inundation, ad nauseam.

So with these regional differences in climate impacts in mind, it may well be appropriate to also coin regional terms for Earth Day. Some ideas are:
  • Bituminous Earth Day - Australia
  • Scorched Earth Day - Kuwait *
  • Soggy Earth Day - London, UK
  • Sandy Earth Day - Jersey Shore
  • Baked Earth Day - SW USA
  • Tarred Earth Day - Alberta
The list is provisional, and regional effects may overlap (ie: hot & salty). Sadly, surviving citizens of one region may never be informed as to the cause of their current calamity. But  hey, "it's just business as usual".

* Thanks and a H/T to Jim Hunt for Scorched Earth Day  ;)

Smearfh Day, I love it. Oh, and Smearfh's are green rather than blue.  :D

This will go over well with today's children, the ones who will be left to deal with the climate we're creating as our legacy to them.  Smearfh :P (the term 'smurf' is also used in cursing)
Cheers!

Why an unearth day !?

An earth day mean you care for one day 1/365 = 0,2739726 % of the time
An unearth day mean you care for 364/365 = 99,7260274 % of the time
I would rather prefer 100% thought !  :)
