Yeah, but I'm not the closest one. The south China incident has e.g. been reported here: http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/hong-kong-flooding-rain/26703868

The gentleman's agreement assumed here is that whoever is closest to the incident may have the best sources and may provide the most competent perspective on the tragedy. We can't all follow all the weather extremes all over the World all the time, but we should be able to support each other from time to time with a reflected view on weird wether.

Okay, makes sense. Anyway thanks for the link. Stalled front and lots of tropical moisture sounds like a good recipe for disaster.

Oren, your quick analysis is full of crap!

The incident I linked to was three years old!.

The real incident was reported here: http://earth-chronicles.com/natural-catastrophe/flooding-in-china-4.html

Why don't you leave the reporting and the analysis to local experts...

How come neither historical  flooding in Quebec, nor 400 mm of rain in 7 hours in southern China casts any comments in this thread?. Has complacency gripped everyone?
Just post us the link(s) and voila - it's on the thread...  ;)

Funny how that works.   ::)

At Least 2 Dead, Dozens Injured After Tornadoes Hit Wisconsin, Oklahoma
Quote
At least two people were killed and dozens of others injured Tuesday after tornadoes tore through a mobile home park in Wisconsin and a subdivision in Oklahoma.

There were 26 reports of tornadoes Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, as a massive severe storm system tore through an area from the South Plains of Texas to the Great Lakes....

Choose your extreme!  :o

U.S.:  A major winter storm is bringing feet of snow to the Rockies, while next door in the Plains, a rare high risk area for severe thunderstorms and possible long-track tornadoes has been issued.

Winter Storm Valerie Bringing Feet of Snow to Wyoming, Colorado Mountains; Denver's Latest-in-Season Snow Event in 42 Years Ahead
Quote
   •   The heavy, wet snow accumulations combined with increasing winds could damage tree limbs and cause power outages, particularly in southeast Wyoming and northern Colorado (including the Front Range urban corridor).
   •   Road closures are likely in Wyoming, including Interstate 80 between Laramie and Cheyenne and possibly Interstate 25 in southeast Wyoming.

Tornado Outbreak Likely Thursday as Next Round of Severe Thunderstorms Moves Into the Plains
Quote
A dangerous setup for severe thunderstorms is expected to bring a tornado outbreak Thursday to many of the same areas of the Plains states that were hit by tornadoes and severe storms Tuesday.
...
The ingredients are in place for dangerous thunderstorms to develop Thursday afternoon into evening. This has prompted the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) to issue a rare high risk area for severe thunderstorms for portions of central and southern Kansas into northern and western Oklahoma for Thursday. This is the area where widespread severe thunderstorms are expected, of which some storms could be particularly intense and long-lived.

With 125 active wildfires burning in Florida, officials say the state is in "the middle of its worst wildfire season in years."
Quote
May is traditionally one of Florida’s driest months, Putnam said, and forecasters anticipate conditions will only get drier and warmer heading into late spring and early summer. Considering the dangers, Gov. Rick Scott issued a wildfire-related state of emergency declaration on April 11. That declaration remains in place. The last time the state had to issue an emergency executive order related to wildfires was June 2011, Putnam said.

According to the Florida Forest Service, there were 125 active wildfires burning across the state on lands under its jurisdiction as of 7:30 a.m. Monday. The fires affected an estimated 31,154 acres. Twenty-seven of those fires, including Pasco’s Anclote Branch blaze, were deemed major, spanning 100 acres or more. State officials also reported there were four fires burning on federal lands in Florida. Those blazes span some 153,746 acres.

As of Monday, 2,000 wildfires had been reported across the Sunshine State since 2017 began. Putnam reported that more than 150,000 acres have burned....

Hailstorm that hammered west metro Denver May 8 is costliest ever for Colorado
The storm caused $1.4 billion in damages, with an estimated 200,000 combined auto and homeowners insurance claims to be filed
Quote
The hailstorm that pounded west metro Denver with golf ball- and baseball-sized stones on May 8 will rank as the most expensive catastrophe in state history, according to estimates Tuesday from the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.

The insurance industry trade group estimates that more than 150,000 auto insurance claims and more than 50,000 homeowners insurance claims will be filed, resulting in $1.4 billion in insured losses.

“It isn’t an exact science, and we try to be conservative,” said Carole Walker, executive director of the trade group. “The cost of claims will likely go up.”

At $1.4 billion, the storm will surpass the $1.1 billion in damage claims, adjusted for inflation, that a storm on July 11, 1990, generated and the $845.5 million in claims tied to a storm on July 20, 2009.

It will also be three times more expensive than the state’s most damaging wildfire, which destroyed 346 homes in the Waldo Canyon area of Colorado Springs in June 2012 and generated $453.7 million in payouts at the time.
...
One factor that sets the May 8 storm apart from earlier ones is that it is on track to generate more auto claims ($710 million) than home claims ($704 million).

“It is a high number of auto claims as opposed to home,” said Walker.

Farmers Insurance Group has seen about 60 percent of damage claims come in on the auto side and 40 percent on the home side, said Carrie Bonney, a spokeswoman for the insurer. Normally, the split is in the other direction.

Part of that reflects the storm’s timing. Cars were out in the open at workplace parking lots or on roads during early rush-hour traffic.

Also, Angela Thorpe, a spokeswoman with State Farm, said the path of the storm took it through areas with a heavy concentration of multifamily housing, where fewer carports and garages are available to shelter vehicles from the elements.

The storm also carried a big punch, with stones so large in some areas that they didn’t just dent hoods and roofs, but shattered and punched through windshields.

About half of the cars reporting damage aren’t drivable, Walker said. That requires providing replacement vehicles, adding to claim costs....

Moscow storm: 11 killed as high winds strike Russian capital
Quote
Most fatalities are reported to have been caused by falling trees

At least 11 people died when a severe thunderstorm hit the Russian capital Moscow, health officials say.  Hundreds of trees were toppled by the storm, and more than 50 people sought medical help.

Reports say that electrical cables were damaged as Moscow was lashed with high winds, hail and torrential rain.

The winds of up to 110 km/h (70 mph) were described by meteorologists as extremely rare for the city, and caused structural damage to buildings.

If the death toll of 11 is confirmed - and some officials give a lower figure - it would be the deadliest storm in the city for more than 100 years.

Mid-USA just went through a 2nd, 100 year flood in 15 months.  While the 5-day future forecast gave people time to sandbag and prepare it was disheartening and depressing.  Clean up continues while questions, of how many more 100 yr., 500yr. or worse floods are coming, remain.  People far away from coasts are facing a stay or go decision now.  For them the rising tide has already come.

Will future forecasts be able to take into account jet stream loops elongated and intensified beyond historical precedent?  Will the historical jet stream survive, morph into something unknown, or just disappear?

Cape Town storm: Eight killed as drought ends
Quote
The storm comes two weeks after the region declared a drought disaster.

It is the worst winter storm for 30 years, according to the South African Weather Service, while local media have dubbed it "the mother of all storms".

In May, the Western Cape province declared a drought disaster after two reservoirs had completely dried up. It was said to have been the region's worst drought in more than a century.

Several other southern African nations were also affected by the two-year drought, which was caused by the El Nino climate phenomenon.

The southwest U.S. is setting up for a record heatwave.

Eric Holthaus:
- Since 1895, Tucson has recorded temperatures at 114°F or hotter only 8 times. That'll happen at least 3 more times in the next week....
https://twitter.com/ericholthaus/status/875422306666815488

- Between 1951-1980 & 1981-2010, the average number of days at or above 100°F in Tucson increased by 55%. An already hot place getting hotter.
https://twitter.com/ericholthaus/status/875424277545099265

- After decades of warming, this will literally be the longest, most intense heat wave in Tucson history. I'm a meteorologist. This is my job.

Absolutely WILD lack of humidity in Tucson, AZ this afternoon. 103°F (39.4°C) with a dew point of -11°F (-23.9°C). That's a relative humidity of 1.25%!

That sure is getting hot! 42 C (107.6 F) is the hottest I have ever experienced when I was visiting Australia. I noted the official highest recorded temperature is still 56.7°C (134°F), which was measured on 10 July 1913 at Greenland Ranch, Death Valley, California, USA.

Slightly belatedly, news that the Hudson Bay Railway to Churchill has been washed away:

http://globalnews.ca/news/3516324/train-to-churchill-man-suspended-indefinitely-after-flooding-damage/

Quote
The only ground transportation to Churchill on the coast of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba has been suspended indefinitely and is not expected to resume until winter.

The owners of the Hudson Bay Railway line say flooding that submerged a section of the track and stopped service on May 23 has caused severe damage.

“A preliminary assessment … indicates that the track bed has been washed away in 19 locations. Five bridges are visibly damaged and an additional 30 bridges and 600 culverts … will need to be further assessed for structural integrity,” Omnitrax Inc. said in a news release Friday.

Mesoscale Convective Systems: Why Thunderstorm Clusters Are Both Important and Dangerous
Quote
Thunderstorms can be hazardous enough. Sometimes they combine into a large cluster spread over multiple states.

Known as mesoscale convective systems (MCS), these thunderstorm clusters are smaller than low-pressure systems with cold and warm fronts, but larger in scale than any single thunderstorm.

They may even grow large enough to affect the weather for the next day in the surrounding area....

Nearly 2,000 firefighters battling out-of-control wildfires in B.C.
Province in state of emergency as more than 7,000 people are forced from their homes

"A state of emergency remains in effect for all of B.C., giving the government special authority to respond to the fires. Such a state hasn't been declared province-wide since the summer of 2003, when 2,500 fires broke out."

Hottest day ever in Shanghai as heat wave bakes China
Quote
SHANGHAI: Shanghai sweltered under a new record high of 40.9°C (105°F) on Friday (Jul 21), authorities said as they issued a weather "red alert" over a stubborn heat wave that has plagued much of the country.

Hospitals in the city have reported increased numbers of patients suffering from heat-related illnesses, according to state media, and the Shanghai zoo said it was putting large blocks of ice into some animal enclosures to help them beat the heat, while providing frozen apples to its pandas.

China's most populous city has baked under soaring summer temperatures for more than two weeks and Friday afternoon reached the hottest point since the establishment of its benchmark weather station in 1872, the municipal weather bureau said.

Other areas of China also have seen records set in recent weeks, in what has been a torrid summer so far for much of the country, while large areas of south-central China have endured raging floods from torrential rain....

I live in Kent, U.K. and spent most of my formative years in Sheerness.  I often visit Sheerness and can confirm anecdotally what the local government says that the sea level there has risen since the 1950s.
Quote
Over the last 45 years, climate change in Kent has largely been  in line with UK-wide climatic trends.

Between 1961 and 2006, average temperatures rose annually in the UK, between 1.0°C and 1.7°C, in all 4 seasons. In the south east, our temperatures have generally increased more than has been seen further north.
Since the mid-20th century average sea levels have risen around the south east coastline by about 1mm per year, a rate which has increased in the 1990s and 2000s.
Over the past 45 years, the south east has experienced an increase in the amount of winter rain that falls in heavy downpours, while summer rainfall has decreased.
...
Apart from severe weather events, gradual changes have been recorded in Kent which suggest that climate change is already having an impact on the county. They include:

    sea level rise at Sheerness
...

During my 71 years I have noticed that the sea walls on the Isle of Sheppey have been raised at least 3 times since the floods of 1953.  Kent is sinking (it was like that when I got here, honest) which affects the apparent sea level.  That said, in my not so humble opinion the current sea defences will fail next time we get a northerly gale, a North sea swell and a spring tide.  That was what we well and truly got in 1953.  Luckily, the flood-water only just reached our house, but many homes were wrecked and some people lost their lives.

To the point: climate change will, not may, make it one day economically infeasible to protect the Isle of Sheppey any longer.

Sea level rise in the South of England is being amplified by isostatic rebound of the ground, caused by the loss of ice since the Ice Age. The Thames barrier is being closed increasingly often as a result.

In 1953 floods affected the whole east coast, the Thames estuary, London and beyond.

In response to this dire emergency the Thames barrier became operational in 1984, protecting London by ensuring that tidal surges go up the river Medway instead of the Thames.
