Skiers left disappointed as snow steers clear of Swiss slopes

http://www.thelocal.ch/20161227/skiiers-left-disappointed-as-snow-steers-clear-of-swiss-slopes

Extract: Several resorts, including the popular Charmey, where no snow has fallen since December 19th, have closed due to the mild weather. The situation is much the same as the 2015 season, when snow didn't arrive until the middle of January.

Temperatures in the Ticino region hit 20.9 degrees Celsius on Christmas Day, the highest recorded in 40 years, according to Meteonews.

Short note : my location hit zero degrees Fahrenheit for the first time this year on fourth of January 06:22 PM local time. Checking Nullschool for North Pole, it is colder up there.  A couple of times here it's hit under -30 degrees Fahrenheit on previous winter nights so plenty of room to get colder still. Time to find out where my warmer winter clothes reside, it looks like I need them this year too.

'Worst Rainfall in 30 Years': Thailand Flooding Hits 700,000 People, Leaves 21 Dead
Quote
Widespread flooding in Thailand's south has killed 21 people, affected hundreds of thousands more, and hit the nation’s rubber industry hard.

Thailand's wet season usually ends in late November and flooding is rare in January, officials told Reuters, but unseasonably heavy rain has hit 12 out of 67 provinces.

“Severe flooding is because of the worst rainfall in more than 30 years", Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha told RTE.

I messaged a friend with a daughter living in SE Spain to warn her last Wednesday that winter with a W! was coming but that it was still a week away ...

this morning her gas ran out while she was in the shower .. she steped out of the freezing water to find it was snowing outside ... seems mum ignored my warning :)

Storm at the pole .. High Ireland .. cold Spain ..

It's more probable that I've been extremely thick but this swapping of heat, pole to equator/equator to pole has become supercharged of late? There is natter in the freezing season (or strat thread?) about 'state change' of the 3 cell trop. over the N.Hemisphere..... this is what I'm witnessing ( it might not be what is actually happening!) with the polar cell having increased its striking range to cover the subtropical zone and Subtropical exploring the pole......

Climate change has arrived in Sweden...

National weather institute SMHI measured average wind speeds of 172.08 kilometres per hour (47.8 metres per second, 106.93 miles per hour) at its weather station in Stekenjokk, in the mountains near the border to Norway, on Wednesday evening.

It is the highest average wind speed since records began in 1951.

The previous record was set in November 2013, also at Stekenjokk, 169.2 km/h. The strongest single gust of wind recorded was also at Stekenjokk, on the same day, which swept past at an impressive 201.6 km/h.

http://www.thelocal.se/20170119/new-wind-record-as-powerful-storm-sweeps-through-sweden

Strong winds and high water levels created unusually mighty waves on the Baltic Sea overnight, measuring around 8.2 metres in significant wave height according to Finland's weather institute.

Significant wave height is a measurement calculated as the mean of the highest third of waves over a period, comparable to the average of 15-20 waves over a period of around ten minutes.

But several individual waves were far higher than that, according to data sent by one of the Finnish meteorological institute's automated buoys measuring wave height in the Gulf of Bothnia.

One registered at around midnight measured 14.8 metres,

http://www.thelocal.se/20170112/record-monster-wave-measured-in-baltic-sea-sweden-finland-weather

Stockholm meanwhile had its warmest New Year's Eve in at least 157 years, according to the weather agency, whose station in the capital has been keeping records of hottest temperatures since 1859.

In 1975 8.4C was measured in Stockholm, compared to 10.3C this December 31st.

http://www.thelocal.se/20170102/sweden-sees-warmest-new-years-eve-on-record

Stockholm was covered by at least 30 centimetres of snow early on Thursday morning, more than on any other November day since records began in 1905, according to national weather agency SMHI.

The sudden snowfall – brilliantly known as a 'snow cannon' in Swedish (lake-effect snow) – created huge problems for many commuters on Wednesday.

How can you said that positive PDO is bringing a strong subtropical jet now, while it was not the case this past winter with an even stronger PDO and en El Niño ?

at the risk of being too much off topic.  my observations show increased water vapor moving into the higher latitudes.  This appears to be operating well below the subtropical jet and is a function of reduced high-temp process/high altitude aerosol emissions from Asia.  These aerosols previously suppressed upper altitude water vapor buildup through strong precipitation signals.

lets move this to wierd weather (or another location if you prefer) to talk http://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,323.1350.html

So, to move ^^ There is also a possible connection with the aerosols, yes. Since 2013, coal consumption / emission is stalling while gas and oil are still on the increase globally. Even though the proofs are thin, I suspect the stall in coal can explain the reduced aerosols emissions, and so could also be a factor in the recent burst of global temperatures. For the water vapor, you quite can be right but I must said I don't have think about this actually. Nonetheless, the observation of more and more water vapor being advected to the poles is clear.

Yes, unusual weather for Florida. I'm located mid-peninsula, in the moderate area. A bit windy right now but no storms yet. I do expect them later. Checking the mesoscale analysis on the Storm Prediction Center website. In the three years I've lived here, I've never seen atmospheric conditions like this. Should be interesting! Hopefully that's all it will be.

Why today's Florida/Georgia tornado outbreak is so potentially dangerous—storm motion (not wind speed!) of 70-90 mph. Little time to react.

@HRRRison: Tornado producing storm located 7 miles north of Eastpoint, Florida, moving northeast at *90mph*. Seek shelter now!

The local blackbird (Turdus merula) has started singing his territorial spring song on the first week of february. I guess he's in for a surprise next week when wacc throws the thermometer back to historical normal winter values of 10-20F, but how would a bird of temperate regions know of Arctic and what it does to the rest of the hemisphere. Anyway they've spread their breeding area c350km (220mi.) northward in the country since the 1970s Temperature at 04:45 AM is round 32F and every flat surface is covered with thin ice with water on top.

At first, I thought the possibility of a landfalling hurricane in the UK or Europe  was highly improbable, until I thought about Hurricane Nicole in October, last year. By mid October, I noted in reply #279 in the hurricane season thread that Nicole was still showing tropical characterics at 40 degrees N, and was projected to go extra-tropical just north of 45 degrees N. Had Nicole followed the Gulf Stream instead of heading north between Greenland and Iceland, it could have made landfall as either a Category 1 or a strong tropical storm, once it reached Europe.

Insofar as Hurricanes and Europe/UK.

I think it was in 2005 that we saw 3 Cape Verde storms refuse the cross the Atlantic and trawl up the west coast of Africa. One entered the Med.

I more wonder just how strong 'Medicanes' can become as heatwaves become ever more common over the Med Basin over summer? I know the Sea is small but we have already seen some strong storms with some tropical characteristics .

AFAIK, the Med is too narrow for proper hurricane development, bur there's indeed nothing to stop the capverde types of turning in their heels and hit Portugal, Spain or southern France. The Bay of Biscay is normally, i think, too cool for full hurricanes but maybe some august...? Not that there aren't normal storms of hurricane force winds there.

Washington, D.C. just broke a 117-year old high temperature record by 6 degrees F.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/02/08/washington-d-c-is-about-to-break-a-117-year-old-high-temperature-record/

That's in advance of a big snowstorm about to wallop the most populous section of the northeast U.S. tomorrow:

Australia:

'Going to be a big day': Heatwave to strain hospitals, power supplies in NSW
Quote
NSW is bracing for a record heatwave that is set to strain hospitals, bring "catastrophic" fire threats to some areas and could cause blackouts, as electricity demand soars to record levels.

Sydney hospitals face an influx of heat-affected presentations in emergency departments as the city heads into a three-day period with temperatures above 40 degrees [104°F]....

Yep.  Very hot in oz.
Moree has smashed it's previous record of days in a row over 35C.
Was 17, now 44 days in a row and counting.

“This developing heatwave is nothing short of horrifying” said climate scientist Sarah Perkin-Kirkpatrick.

Quote
“Much of eastern Australia has seen heatwave after heatwave this summer, with some seasonal records already broken by the start of February. Night-time temperatures have been too hot for adequate sleep and daytime temperatures have been searing.”
...
“What is particularly concerning about the developing event is the intensity, where many regions will see a string of extremely hot days with little relief. Much of NSW, QLD and northern VIC will suffer the most, where temperatures will be the hottest, and follow little reprieve from the previous heatwaves.” she said.
...
Greater resilience in the energy system was called for by Connor to balance energy security and reduce emissions to meet our climate commitments, “Seeking to blame renewable energy technologies is a pointless distraction from the real issue. As blackouts in past years have shown, Australia’s electricity system is severely stressed by extreme heat, particularly in the southeast of the country. The solution is to increase the resilience of the system as a whole rather than focusing just on isolated parts.”
...
Shadow Environment and Energy Minister Mark Butler at 2.20pm media conference said the National electrical grid system was not fit for purpose and urgently needed an overhaul. He highlighted the Tomago Aluminium Smelter had already been asked to phase down consumption. Further more widespread load shedding may still be necessary. The smelter uses about 10 per cent of NSW’s electricity production.
...
Rooftop solar at 4.45pm contributed 3.24 percent of electricity to the NSW grid, and in Queensland it was 5.91 percent. This is important as it moves the demand peak to later in the day, as well as taking some usage to behind the meter. This takes a little pressure of the utility scale electricity generators....

Australia is  Red hot: NSW smashes February statewide heat records two days in a row
Quote
Meteorologists were predicting NSW would set a state-wide record for February warmth during the current heatwave but few would have tipped the mark would be broken two days in a row.

The blast of summer heat has placed south-eastern Australia on the map as the hottest place on the planet.

Residents of Richmond saw the mercury climb to 47 [117°F] degrees on Saturday, placing the town on the north-west fringe of Sydney within less than a degree of the title of global hot spot - Ivanhoe Airport recorded a maximum of 47.6 degrees.

Before Friday, NSW had never had a February day above 42 degrees, based on averaged maximums in the state, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. ...

Wow, upper 70s (ºF - yes, I'm an American - okay >24ºC) on top of Mt. Kosciuszko, tallest mountain in Australia (2228m ~ 7310'), according to that map.  Actually, local forecasts claim highs this week will be from 11-19ºC.  Low areas near the mountain will be warmer.

Aside:  The mountain next to Mt. Kosciuszko was named for Polish-Lithuanian general who fought in the American Revolutionary War [winning side] [and other wars - losing side], and the names were switched in 1892 when they discovered the old Mt. Kosciuszko was the shorter of the two. Further aside:  Kościuszko wrote a will dedicating his American assets to the education and freedom of U.S. slaves. The funds were never used for the purpose he had intended.
