CORRECTION

Quote
those aren't tonnes but 1000 lbs weight. There are 2.2 lbs to the kg so you need to divide the figures you gave by 2.2 to corretly state tons of CO2e.
Thanks. That now makes more sense. I had previously assumed that the embodied carbon per car was about 4 tonnes CO2e.

The estimates in  A Roadmap to Climate-Friendly Cars: 2013 (1) when converted to metric tonnes CO2e are:

Electric Car     12.3
Gas Car            7.4
Hybrid Car        7.1

The personal remaining carbon budget (for 1.5C) that I guestimate (based on Carbon Brief's argument is 25 tonnes CO2e. That budget it would be reached with the embodied carbon in just two electric cars or three other cars.  That leaves nothing for food, travel, heating, entertainment and breathing.

CAN EMBODIED CARBON BE REDUCED?

The CO2e estimates for batteries have never been credible. That said what will the claim be when Tesla makes all their batteries in a factory completely run on wind and solar power?
Perhaps those estimates are over estimates. Perhaps Tesla will build solar and wind farms to make batteries but there are complicated arguments here. First both solar farms and wind farms are high in embodied carbon when current manufacturing technology is used. This creates a carbon hit in the short to medium term. Isn't this when it matters?

NUCLEAR POWER

Jim Hunt
Quote
Your document implies that if you're going to build lots of electric vehicles it would be a really good idea to use "low carbon" electricity to do so. However for some strange reason whilst Climate Central does mention places like Vermont it fails to mention France, at present surely the best place on the planet to build an EV production line?
The first issue here is one similar to the use of recycled steel in building. If it's used in one building, the stock of recycled materials decreases so more virgin steel is produced. See The ICE approach to recycled materials in (No High Buildings). (*) With nuclear electricity, using it means that demand has to be satisfied through non nuclear sources.

However, if demand increases for nuclear electricity, the response might be to build more nuclear power stations. This may be good for global warming (**) but nuclear power stations are at risk from global warming. Natalie Kopytko, of the University of York, (wrote in the Guardian)

Quote
No matter how well they build them, nuclear power plants require lots of water. As such, the plants need to be either on the coast or near a large body of water at an inland site. The loss of off-site power commonly happens during storms, particularly at coastal locations. So a strong storm, probably stronger than the historical records used in the estimates for design, could cause flooding that leads to an accident similar to the one we are witnessing.
And what if industrial civilisation fails? The expertise and resources to manage the problems of the safe disposal of nuclear waste will disappear and then ...

WHAT ABOUT ICELAND?

Especially considering that they are being made out of aluminum!  Very electricity intensive production.
That suggests Iceland to me.

PUMP PRIMING AND SPENDING OUR REMAINING CARBON BUDGET

If we are going to postulate a world where our cars and buildings have little embodied carbon we ought to look at how we get there. We could argue that we must expect to spend some of our remaining carbon budget to prime the pump of a low carbon future (i.e. laying down the infrastructure for low carbon manufacturing and construction) but ...

What is the carbon cost of priming this pump? and

How much of our remaining carbon budget can we afford?

(*) Having said that, there will be a (small?) secondary effect: greater demand for steel will mean more steel is recycled.

(**) Are there some embodied carbon issues here too?

Thanks.

Thorium does seem a much better option than current power from nuclear.

That paper: Denmark "is now committed to a complete decarbonisation of its energy system by 2050". Perhaps I've been influenced by Guy McPherson's visit to York recently but aren't these best efforts too little to late? The paper starts

Quote
Denmark is widely recognised as a world leader in the transformation to a more sustainable energy future.
In 2008, Denmark's emissions per capita were 8.4 tonnes CO2e Wikipedia's List of countries by carbon dioxide emissions per capita. Assuming 8 tonnes now, a linear decrease gives 140 tonnes CO2e up to 2050 (140 is 35years*0.5*8.0 tonnes) .

Compare this 140 tonnes CO2e to the remaining carbon budget per person I calculated above: 33 tonnes CO2e for a 1.5˚C rise or 115 tonnes for a 2˚C rise.

Depressing.

I'm beginning to think Guy isn't such a nutter after all.

Geoff, I agree it sounds too late, but just dabbling at the math, since much of world population has a far low carbon footprint, Denmark could use more carbon budget per capita than the average world citizen and still get the whole world within budget. The use of the average is somewhat misleading when there are such differences between countries.

Good point. But would  the average world citizen still get the whole world within budget?

According to World Bank data, in 2010 the world average CO2e per person was 4.88. If that is tailed off linearly from now over 35 years gives 85 tonnes CO2e. That's over the 1.5˚C remaining carbon budget of 33 tonnes but below the remaining carbon budget of 140 tonnes for a 2˚C rise.

However, this World Bank Data is 5 years old and total emissions have risen since 2010.

Tesla co-founder turns his attention to electric trucks.

Quote
Wrightspeed’s main markets now are delivery trucks and garbage trucks. These trucks that have a lot of stops and starts and high fuel consumption offer a very compelling economic case for electrification. Where an average family car might only burn 600 gallons of fuel a year, a garbage truck can consume 14,000 gallons a year. A typical garbage truck might travel 130 miles a day with a thousand hard stops at 2.8 miles per gallon of fuel. A Wrightspeed retrofit for the heavy duty platform costs around $200,000 but can save $35,000 per year in fuel and $20,000 in maintenance (much of that in brakes) which means 4-5 years to pay off the investment.

You seemed to have missed the point that these would be Japanese test cycle estimates which are crazy over-estimates. For example from Wiki numbers for the Prius C:

Quote
Toyota estimates the fuel economy 35 km/L (82 mpg-US) (2.86 L/100 km) on the official JC08 Japanese test cycles and 40 km/L (94 mpg-US) (2.5 L/100 km) under the 10–15 test cycle.[2][24] Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency test cycles, the Prius c is rated at 53 mpg-US (4.4 L/100 km; 64 mpg-imp) city and 46 mpg-US (5.1 L/100 km; 55 mpg-imp) highway, for a combined fuel economy of 50 mpg-US (4.7 L/100 km; 60 mpg-imp)

I own and drive a Prius C and the US estimates reflect my reality. This shows that the Japanese fuel economy estimates are roughly double what can be considered real. So probably 165 mile range more likely. Still great and much more believable.

It produces the equivalent of 245 horsepower, making it roughly comparable in output to the brand's latest 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder gas engines. It draws its fuel from a hydrogen fuel tank that sits between the axles. The BMW-patented storage system can hold enough compressed hydrogen to take the hunchbacked 5 Series 300 miles before refueling.

Chevy Bolt EV on its way to the masses – not the elite
Quote
True to its namesake, the Chevy Bolt EV seems to be moving through the pipeline at an impressive speed, at least by auto-industry standards. The company recently revealed that it has built 55 pre-production Bolts, which are handily delivering the desired 200 miles of range.

Tesla Supercharger use -- revised?
Quote
At Tesla’s annual shareholders’ meeting earlier this month, CEO Elon Musk groused about Model S owners who aggressively use the company’s Superchargers for their local driving.

Superchargers, Musk said, were intended for long-distance charging.

For Model S owners fortunate enough to live near the lightning-fast free chargers, it just wasn’t cool to regularly use them for local driving, he said.

Solar Impulse 2 plane is grounded temporarily in Hawaii due to battery damage caused by overheating during record flight over the Pacific.
Quote
During the first ascent on day one of the flight from Nagoya to Hawaii, the battery temperature increased too much due to over insulation. And while the Mission Team was monitoring this very closely during the mission leg, there was no way to decrease the temperature for the remaining duration of the flight as each daily cycle requires an ascend to 28’000 feet and descend for energy management issues.

The damage to certain parts of the batteries is irreversible and will require repairs and replacements that will take several weeks to work through.

Netherlands Company Introduces [recycled] Plastic Roads That Are More Durable, Climate Friendly Than Asphalt
Quote
The company is also hoping to avoid some carbon dioxide emissions by switching asphalt roads to plastic ones. The carbon footprint of asphalt totals 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, the company says, so using recycled plastic instead could help cut down on some of those emissions.

Jorritsma said that using plastic instead of asphalt would cut down on the carbon dioxide required to produce, transport, and process asphalt. And, he said, because plastic roads are predicted to last longer than traditional roads, the CO2 associated with regularly replacing the surfaces will also be saved.

Well, reading the comments for charging sites on PlugShare, broken plugs are often a problem, and this would help solve that.  Also, stationary wireless charging will lead to charging apparatus built into roads, meaning more miles without having to stop, and lessening the problem of limited charging (parking) spaces.

Ten ways autonomous driving could redefine the automotive world.
Quote
5. Car insurers might shift their business model.

Car insurers have always provided consumer coverage in the event of accidents caused by human error. With driverless vehicles, auto insurers might shift the core of their business model, focusing mainly on insuring car manufacturers from liabilities from technical failure of their AVs, as opposed to protecting private customers from risks associated with human error in accidents. This change could transform the insurance industry from its current focus on millions of private consumers to one that involves a few OEMs and infrastructure operators, similar to insurance for cruise lines and shipping companies.

BMW's Plan to Prevent Electric Cars From Overwhelming the Grid
When electricity demand is high, i3 owners can now delay a charge—for a cash rebate.
Quote
America’s electricity grid wasn’t designed with electric vehicles in mind, and with an influx of EVs replacing gasoline cars, power utilities have started to feel the strain. If too many EV owners charge up their car during times of high energy demand, the grid can get overwhelmed, leading to higher energy costs and greater risk of blackouts. Avoiding that situation requires the grid to grow or become more efficient in terms of how it manages the power supply.

That’s where a new initiative from BMW called ChargeForward comes into play. The program kicks off this week with a group of 100 Bay Area i3 drivers who have given BMW the ability to rearrange their charging schedules in response to high demand. Using an app, drivers say when they need their car each day and BMW works with Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the local utility, to adjust charging schedules remotely, when necessary, based on real-time energy usage data. The goal is to smooth out demand peaks so the utility doesn’t need to ramp up extra production and consumers don’t have to pay peak rates.
...
If the delayed charge doesn’t free up enough energy capacity for PG&E, BMW has a back-up option: its own in-house energy supply. BMW had a bunch of lithium ion batteries left over from the earlier Mini E electric car pilot project. Instead of letting them waste away in storage, company scientists cobbled them together to create 240 kilowatt-hours of stationary storage at a Mountain View facility, powered by a 100-kilowatt solar panel installation onsite. Aside from supplying the whole office with energy, this allows the company to push its own energy into the grid when needed.

Two more California cities order Proterra electric buses
Quote
More California cities are electrifying their transit fleets. Stockton and Porterville recently placed orders with Proterra for two of its new Catalyst battery-electric buses, with funding from the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District.

Electric bus-maker Proterra says its Catalyst is the most efficient 40-foot transit bus on the market – at 22 MPGe, it’s nearly six times more efficient than the diesel buses it will be replacing. With these latest orders, Proterra now has firm orders for 110 units on its books, as well as 323 more on option.
