Arctic Sunrise
« on: September 20, 2013, 04:24:55 AM »
Greenpeace boat Arctic Sunrise has been boarded by Russian coastguards. If you recall, Greenpeace repeatedly applied for permission to sail into Russian waters to monitor the exploratory drilling, and was repeatedly turned down, for a different reason each time. Clearly Russia was never going to permit it. They went ahead anyway, and predictably have been boarded. The twitter stream is here:

Yet another ominous sign of the risks of exploration in the Arctic.
Tanker Nordvik, full of Diesel, has struck a floe near the persistent ice remnants on the SW side of Severnaya Zemlya.

Meanwhile, the Greenpeace protests near the Prirazlomnaya oil rig continue into potentially international diplomatic unrest, as several members of the crew got arrested.
Here in Holland, pleas to help the crew are pouring into the Facebook account of the Dutch secretary of state.

Quote
Greenpeace's Head of Media has told the BBC that some of their activists are under armed guard by Russian security officers who stormed the group's ship in the Arctic.

Ben Stewart said that that 15 agents abseiled down a rope from a helicopter onto the Arctic Sunrise.

Thanks, Jim.
I read on newsmedia over here they're being towed to Murmansk. Under armed surveillance. The allogations will be surveyed over there... they're accused of "terrorism"....
The Russian Coast Guard took their ship in international waters.

News has just come in that the Greenpeace crew, held in arrest aboard their ship Arctic Sunrise, must probably endure the vagaries of Russian State justice procedures.

The spokesman of the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office in Moscow, Vladimir Markin, said that an investigation is started on suspicion of piratery, violation of Russian souvereignty and endangering the environmental safety.
This is the same spokesman and Committee that has been harrassing many representatives of the  Russian opposition. It is just weeks ago this Committee has played a distressing role in the sentence of detention camp for well known lawyer and anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny.

Navalny, who ran for the position of mayor of Moscow on a critical campaign against the Putin-led government, had revealed several doubtful practices within state businesses in the oil and gas-industry.
It is not hard to see the link here to the Greenpeace case. Navalny supporters have been saying the campaign led by the Investigative Committee is aimed at scaring off all opposition.

It looks like Greenpeace is next in line to be bullied out of whatever claimed black gold bonanza Putin’s State wants to exploit.

According to The Arctic Journal:

Federal Russian prosecutors announced today that they were no longer charging a group of 30 Greenpeace protestors with piracy for their efforts on September 18 to board a Gazprom oil rig drilling in the Arctic Ocean. The charge carried a 15-year sentence.

Instead, the so-called ‘Arctic 30’ will be charged with hooliganism, which carries a seven-year sentence.

Greenpeace said the charge of hooliganism was still “wildly disproportionate”.

A plea bargain involving time served, a Nun with a ruler and a naughty slap on the wrist sounds like justice in my opinion, if it's done immediately.
