I wonder whether this is also a consequence of stored heat in deeper ocean layers. The Leeuwin current may be superficial, but could also feature upwelling.
They describe Feb-March 2011. In the thread on ENSO I posted SST maps for '12 and '13. Both show a repetition of the warm pool. This year it extends into the Great Australian Bight too.
