Ward Hunt Ice Shelf / Ellesmere Island Canada
« on: February 15, 2015, 12:24:19 PM »
Just checking the new Polar View ( http://www.polarview.aq/arctic ) I noticed that nothing much seems to be left of the "largest" ice shelf in the Arctic:

If people want to compare, they can read this blog post I wrote back in 2011: You do it to your shelf.

To me it looks like the fast ice / ice shelf north of Johannes V. Jensen Land, Northern Greenland, between Kap Washington (west) and Sands Fjord (east) seems larger?:

The Greenland shelf certainly looks bigger (does it have a name?). But it's on the European side, so may be 'pride' issues for why it's not reflected in the encyclopedias.

The Ward Hunt Ice Shelf is biggest on the American side.

Nope no name, the same is the story for some glaciers (10) in that image.

That is not an ice shelf, it is low lying pure rocks, seen here from a very old image:

How about "Espen Rock Shelf"? ;D
Arctic ice is healthy for children and other living things because "we cannot negotiate with the melting point of ice"

Volcanic rock, I presume? Saw hints of that when I tried to find Kap Washington on a map.

Kap Washington Group is not the area, since the rock shelf mentioned above includes Kap Morris Jesup to the west and Kap Ole Chiewitz to the east (northern side of Frederick E. Hyde Fjord).
