Resurrecting an old thread "Arctic Sea Ice Forum Humor". Not a lot of good news this week and a lot of bad stuff.

By the way:- In a civilised country humor" is spelt "humour" .
Definition and Origin:
Humour (British English) or humor (American English; see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), controlled human health and emotion.
Trouble is - the Yank spelling matches the Latin origin

Here is the first posting from Trump's Science Bible

One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe by William Carpenter published 1885

Quote
Proof 33. If the Earth were a globe, people—except those on the top—would, certainly, have to be “fastened” to its surface by some means or other, whether by the “attraction” of astronomers or by some other undiscovered and undiscoverable process! But, as we know that we simply walk on its surface without any other aid than that which is necessary for locomotion on a plane, it follows that we have, herein, a conclusive proof that Earth is not a globe.

you probably mean that if it were not so sad it would be funny ?

partly kidding since we're in the humor thread, of course i got you right and it can't be pointed out too much and no place is "not right" for doing so.

sooner or later we need "gesammelte werke" of that kind, perhaps the amount of such stuff would wake up a few more.

The only problem is that this is not funny. The political threads are a sure way to destroy this forum. Posters who used to argue science and make great contributions, well beyond my pay grade, are now reduced to mud-slinging, since in all things political there no such thing as a decisive argument, and science cannot be used as a final judge. Everyone has an opinion, and nobody is listening to anybody and anything on these threads. After enough back and forth, alienation and loss of respect set in between posters, which inevitably lead back to the science parts. New threads continue to pop up, my "unread posts" list is constantly cluttered with all these threads. And when the forum's chief is an active and willing participant, there is no one to appeal to.

What goes in "The Rest" doesn't stay in "The Rest". It's the same usernames. Major mistake. Should have been set up as a different forum altogether, requiring a separate account with a different alias.
Or using Buddy terminology: I really HATE the turn the FORUM has TAKEN.
Sad.

Yes, sorry about that.  ;D

My problem is that I'm very interested in this stuff, and as I don't have much time to venture outside the ASIF a lot, it's convenient for me to have these discussions on my own forum. My wife also says I shouldn't waste my energy, but apparently there's some perverse side in me that keeps looking for that distraction.

On the other hand, it is related to AGW, in the sense that we need to make systemic changes if we want to prevent the worst possible outcomes. I'm on the outlook for movements or forces that at least offer the possibility of making these systemic changes, because it's not going to come from the dominant forces in our society, economics and politics.

I admit that it is somewhat disappointing when a bunch of people with whom you get along greatly when it comes to talking about Arctic sea ice and AGW, disagree with you so much when it comes to the underlying processes and root causes of the problem. But it's good in the sense that it helps me understand my audience better. I think that the battle with climate denial has been won, but there's still a lot of work to be done to push back against conditioned beliefs and trust in the system.

I've been thinking for some time now that maybe I should make politics off-topic on this forum for the reasons Oren states. But discussing politics is an integral part of finding solutions to AGW...

I don't know what to do about it. Sorry.

While I share some of the complaints, this is a highly selective image of what's going on in the Forum. Would be good to have "Recent Posts" listed/filtered according to categories.

If you look at the timestamps, this was a quick and intense exchange: It happened because it happened that several folks where checking the same stuff at the same time. So I think this was mostly a highlight of the Forum -- caveat below *)

Like Neven I think these things are related to the AGW problem (we are a significant process in today's workings of the biogeosphere), and that's why I'm actually following and checking stuff in detail. (At a normal point in the history of Life I would have stayed in my mathematical ivory tower and percieved all this physics and biology stuff as just another interesting field for play with maths. The times forced me to care more about general natural philosophy and watching human psychology/psychopathy, incl. my self...)

I actually despise polit blah ever since the cold war, and some commenters here confirm this.

But also, the polit threads here are a rare gem of social media, because here we mostly have highly educated science minded folks discussing stuff - incl. some very exceptional people that would get drowned/flooded/thinned out in other places on the Internet.

Back to thread topic (humor)... Next to occasional fits of disgust, I somethimes find the polit threads funny, or at least philosophically humorous -- when the highfalutin science guy turns into common Homo "Sapiens" with all their delusion and wishful thinking...

-----------------------------
*)
Someone had swallowed Russian Ukraine-propaganda hook line and sinker, to the point of making up new stuff on the fly, actively ignoring what we had sorted out on the Ukraine threads ad nauseam.

Suggestion to help reduce the noise level:
Any assertion/comment that is not backed with a link or a google-able name/term should be ignored and not engaged with.

Discussing politics on an Internet forum (and almost anywhere else) gets you nowhere in this day and age. It's not the same as fixing politics or solving the world's problems. Sadly, science-oriented people are not better than the average at listening when it comes to politics. It's a sewer, and everyone's shouting down a pipe to nowhere.

I don't know what to do about it. Sorry.
If not a new forum, then at least provide the ability to put a thread (actually a whole bunch of them) on ignore, so it doesn't clutter people's screens in the recent posts and recent threads lists.

Since the main complaint was that all these posts show up in the "Show unread posts since last visit." button, I'd like to second Martin's suggestion above to "to have "Recent Posts" listed/filtered according to categories.". Oren made a similar suggestion.

To start, maybe have at least TWO buttons :

One "Show unread posts since last visit WITHOUT the 'rest'"
and One "Show unread posts since last visit WITH the 'rest'"

[edit] The rush of comments on RussiaGate thread yesterday was because there was one commenter making up 'facts' on the fly, and refusing to provide references. As a suggestion, you could put such commenters on notice.

Insert old joke:
Q: How do you know if a finn is happy of your question?
A: He looks at you with a grim face, and answers in dialectal finnish you don't get.

The difference to a Dane is of course the face is bland on a Dane. This is why finns and danes get along so well, I'm told.

Icelanders are likely to depart the Paris accord on the grounds of bad wording on the agreement. "It's global milding, not warming", says the negotiator for the country. Siberian delegates applause.
