I will pile on a bit. The next 48 hours are going to produce a potentially terrible situation concerning fire storms.

What boggles me is how the Govt is still ignoring climate change and denying the links between the coming events and climate change.

From the article:
People in bushfire-risk areas have been told to start thinking now about a survival plan and head to larger towns and built-up areas.

Commissioner Fitzsimmons warned, "we cannot guarantee a fire truck at every home" and encouraged early evacuation for those at risk.

"If you're not doing that tonight, you certainly need to be doing it early tomorrow morning," he said.

"We know the fires on the northern coast are not going to be contained ahead of tomorrow's weather, which means those fires are going to spread, they're going to spread quickly and spread aggressively."

A total fire ban is in place statewide for Monday and Tuesday and some schools have been closed.

Commissioner Fitzsimmons said more than 1,400 personnel from interstate had joined the firefighting effort in NSW and 400 more were set to arrive today ahead of tomorrow's dangerous conditions.

He said up to 20 firefighters had already accessed medical attention in hospitals as blazes intensified.

I liked this perspective on the Australian bush fires and was moved by the symbol of hope this person had. A longish but worthwhile read.

Australia fires: 'Catastrophic' alerts in South Australia and Victoria

...

Where's the danger?
Fires in South Australia (SA) prompted emergency warnings on Wednesday as temperatures neared 45C (113F) in parts of the state, exacerbated by winds of up to 90km/h (55mph).

Officials switched off electricity to about 10,000 homes and businesses to reduce the risk of new fires. Such blazes are most commonly sparked by winds bringing down power lines.

"All areas of the state are in danger today, with the potential for fires which do start to be uncontrollable by fire crews," a Country Fire Service spokeswoman told the BBC.

Koalas ‘Functionally Extinct’ After Australia Bushfires Destroy 80% Of Their Habitat
https://www.forbes.com/sites/trevornace/2019/11/23/koalas-functionally-extinct-after-australia-bushfires-destroy-80-of-their-habitat/amp/

As Australia experiences record-breaking drought and bushfires, koala populations have dwindled along with their habitat, leaving them “functionally extinct.”

The chairman of the Australian Koala Foundation, Deborah Tabart, estimates that over 1,000 koalas have been killed from the fires and that 80 percent of their habitat has been destroyed.

Functional extinction is when a population becomes so limited that they no longer play a significant role in their ecosystem and the population becomes no longer viable. While some individuals could reproduce, the limited number of koalas makes the long-term viability of the species unlikely and highly susceptible to disease.

Deforestation and bushfires destroy the main nutrient source of koalas, the eucalyptus tree. An adult koala will eat up to 2 pounds of eucalyptus leaves per day as its main staple of nutrients. While eucalyptus plants will grow back after a fire, it will take months, leaving no suitable food source for koalas and starvation a likely scenario for many.

Bushfires devastate rare and enchanting wildlife as 'permanently wet' forests burn
Quote
The rainforests along the spine of the Great Dividing Range, between the Hunter River and southern Queensland, are remnants of Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent that broke up about 180 million years ago.  The forests are mountaintop islands that have been "permanently wet" for tens of millions of years. ...

"We are seeing fire going into these areas where fire is simply not meant to go," says Mr Graham, a fire specialist with the Nature Conservation Council.

Most of the focus of Australia's catastrophic fires has been on people and property — with the exception of koalas, which have come to symbolise the non-human costs. Beyond the koalas are many rare and fascinating creatures whose lives and homes have been destroyed, or remain threatened.

"The fauna in these landscapes requires permanently wet conditions, and many of the fauna species in these landscapes simply have no tolerance to fire," Mr Graham says.

The songbirds that live in these ancient wet forests have always lived there.  The Albert's Lyre Bird. The Rufous Scrub Bird. The Log Runner. The Tree Creeper. And, confusingly, the Cat Bird; a large, green rainforest bird that wails like a cat. They are internationally renowned. Birders from around the world come to see and hear them.

"These are global strongholds of the most ancient birds on the planet," Mr Graham says. ...

Grandmother dumps burnt remains of home at Parliament House in climate change protest

Quote
A woman has brought the charred remains of her bushfire-ravaged home to Parliament House in Canberra, accusing both major political parties of failing to act on climate change.
...snip....
Ms Plesman, who is now living in a Grafton hotel, said she was furious when Mr Morrison offered prayers for victims.

"I lost my house, I lost my way of life — my whole community has — and while that was happening, the PM said that he didn't want us to talk about climate change, that this wasn't the time," she said.

"We weren't allowed to mention climate change and then [Mr Morrison] said that he was praying for us.

"I got really upset and really angry because I just felt that we needed a hell of a lot more than that.

The reason nothing gets done is because people in power think that human ingenuity will sort things out when the crises stop. They don't ever think there will be a day when they simply. don't. stop.

Welcome to our world. Now it has come to the cities. No-one was worried elsewhere while the people of the Latrobe Valley lived int his for weeks and weeks while the mine was on fire. They didn't evacuate then, as they didn't care.
They can't evacuate now, as there is nowhere to go. Truth coming home.

Oh Dog, you tried to tell them what was coming. The scientist have been trying to tell them.
The Greens tried to tell them. Greta tried to tell them. The school kids tried to tell them. Extinction Rebellion tried to tell them. Old people and young people all over the world have tried to tell them.
But the denial message paid for and delivered by Murdoch and the others of the 1% over-rode the millions of voices who could see what was the eventual unthinkable truth.

And the political lemmings believed the denials. They responded with fervour to the smug dismissal of the putrid pollies that kids should be in school learning to dig coal, Adani is a 'good' foreign Australian, that Extinction Rebellion are a bunch of unemployed 'terrorists' who'll smack a fine police officer horse and want to steal your weekend.

What price the weekend now? You can still drive your ute.... but you cannot go outside because of the toxic air, and there is nowhere to go because all the good places are burning.

California Bans Insurers from Dropping Policies in Fire-Ravaged Areas
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2019-12-05/california-bans-insurers-from-pulling-policies-in-fire-ravaged-areas?_amp=true

State regulators on Thursday pulled the emergency brake on insurers fleeing California’s fire zones.

Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced a one-year moratorium banning insurers from not renewing policies for homeowners in wildfire-ravaged areas of the state.

“I have heard the same story again and again. People getting dropped by their insurance after decades,” Lara said. “To add insult to injury, many struggle to find coverage.”

... A California Department of Insurance report last year found that the number of homeowners in the wildland-urban interface who complained about getting dropped by their plans more than tripled from 2010 to 2016. Complaints about increased premiums rose 217%.

The state estimates that more than 1 million California homes are considered at high risk for wildfires.

Sydney Australia.
For the last month, fires have burned out of control throughout the State and near Sydney.
This has meant an entire month of smoke filled air..... and there is no end in sight.

I live in Melbourne, the expectation for this year is we will be going through the same thing. It is so horribly dry and it is not going to be broken within the next three or four months.

Melbourne is not hot yet, thankfully. I am enjoying the cooler weather while it lasts, but when it hits in the coming week or two, it will not go away.

Now is the time to read the smoke signals of 2019. Their message of doom is clear

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/dec/10/now-is-the-time-to-read-the-smoke-signals-of-2019-their-message-of-doom-is-clear

  Quotes:
Or maybe the metaphor is more prosaic, that the haze is a tribute to the PM’s mastery at obscuring reality and harnessing disengagement in the pursuit and ultimate attainment of power.

We would stretch the analogy to describe the way he has invited the public to think of themselves as noble and quiet Australians who are happy to stand back as unions and charities and environmentalists and even lawyers have their rights to promote their public discourse whittled away.

And the haze would obscure the fact that what is happening here is happening around the globe, as privately owned social platforms usurp the traditional safeguards of democracy, spreading lies and anger that create the climate for authoritarian populists.

Of course there is nothing wrong with personal happiness – indeed it is something we should all aspire to – but what strikes me with this table is a growing disconnect between our personal world and the one that sustains it.

And as we zoom out the picture gets even more bleak. The planet is in strife and we know it. Except we are still doing OK so there’s no need to do anything now.

When unions are weakened, wages flatline and the economy stalls; when refugees are denied medical support, people die and we lose our moral compass; when coal burns, climates change, the Earth becomes more fragile, homes burn down and people die.

Revealed: fires three times more common in Amazon beef farming zones
Investigation reveals 70% of Nasa fire alerts were in the estimated buying zones of beef companies, some of which export to UK

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/dec/10/revealed-fires-three-times-more-common-in-amazon-beef-farming-zones

 Quotes:
Some of the world’s biggest meat companies operate in the region. More than a quarter of a million fire alerts were issued in the estimated buying zones of JBS, the largest supplier of meat globally, for example. Its factories are known to export to Europe, including to UK companies.

There were almost 80,000 fire alerts in the probable buying areas of Marfrig, the third largest Brazilian beef exporter, and more than 66,000 around abattoirs owned by Minerva. These three meatpackers dominate in Brazil’s Amazon and account for nearly half of the cattle slaughtered in the region, according to Imazon.

Greg Mullins, who was Fire and Rescue NSW commissioner from 2003 to 2017, says Sydney will likely experience devastation greater than 1994, when hundreds of suburban homes were lost.

"The worst is to come because it's going to get hotter and drier and there's no significant rain in the outlooks," Mr Mullins told AAP.

"We've got massive fires that are too big to put out without rain. They are going to get bigger and they are going to come into Sydney suburbs, the South Coast, the Central Coast."

My family live in surbuban Wollongong an hour south of Sydney.
Everything is bone dry, drier than any time in living memory. Though in a residential area they have made plans to evacuate if any fire comes down the mountain range as it's plainly obvious that on a hot windy day stopping it just won't be possible.

My brother in law and nephew work in a coal mine, yesterday production was stopped because the volume of smoke being sucked into the mine was causing the fire systems to trip and continuing without them was unsafe. Visibility at times has been as low as a few hundred metres it looks apocalyptic.
This years camping trip has been relocated because of the fires. The lawns that are always green are brown and dying along with my mother's garden. All this and they either refuse to believe or just don't want to know about climate change. I used to think something like this would wake people up but no sign at all so far. Perhaps after this summer when the drought, fires and smoke are so visible but from their response so far I doubt it.

PS The're now planning next year's O/S holidays.

Dog help us all.

I am not sure where to put this....... but given the situation has come about because of the ongoing fires beside Sydney, I decided this may be the best place.

As a slight aside, there is a significant heatwave crossing Australia at the moment and arrives on the East Coast on Tuesday.

California:  Regulators reach $1.6-billion proposed settlement with PG&E
Quote
... Under the terms of the proposed settlement, PG&E would also be required to spend $50 million in shareholder money on system enhancements that regulators hope will lessen the risk of the utility’s equipment causing further disastrous wildfires.

If approved, this would be the largest dollar amount ever imposed by the California Public Utilities Commission in a wildfire-related enforcement proceeding, according to the commission. The settlement must be considered and approved by the agency’s commissioners.

The filing sets into motion the next steps, which include a review by an administrative law judge, a 30-day comment period and public review by the agency’s commissioners. Members of the public can comment on the proposed settlement by emailing public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov and referring to proceeding number I.19-06-015.

“The parties involved in the proposed settlement have requested expedited approval by the CPUC’s commissioners so that PG&E’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case can be resolved by June 30, 2020, enabling the utility to participate in the state’s special wildfire fund to pay future wildfire claims,” according to the commission.

PG&E would be required to use the $50 million in shareholder money for a range of activities, including vegetation management, transparency and accountability-focused initiatives, and more community engagement.

During the two years following the effective date of the settlement agreement, PG&E would be expected to hold 24 town hall meetings in communities at higher risk of wildfires and in places that have been affected by the much-debated public safety power shutoffs.

The settlement would also require PG&E to regularly meet with local government officials to discuss its “ongoing wildfire safety activities,” according to the settlement. The utility would also be required to provide electronic month-ahead reports of planned vegetation management to local governments. To receive these reports, county leaders would need to request in writing that they receive them, the settlement reads.

PG&E would also be required to give up to $5 million in shareholder money to the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers for a pilot program being designed to help residents disproportionately affected by public safety power shutoffs. ...

Australian Fires Threaten Sydney Water Supply
https://dw.com/en/australian-fires-threaten-sydney-water-supply/a-51810150

Australian authorities were concerned on Friday that bushfires could jeopardize Sydney's drinking water supply.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 41 degrees Celsius (106 F) in some parts of the state on Sunday and the fire danger remains very high.

Emergency services are focusing on protecting water plants, pumping stations, pipes and other infrastructure from fires around Sydney.

Two fires are burning near Warragamba Dam, which provides water to about 80% of Sydney's 5 million residents. As well as fire damage to infrastructure, it faces contamination risks from ash run-off and debris.

... The dam is 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Sydney and is at 44.8% capacity due to a prolonged drought. So far, the state's water infrastructure has avoided major damage. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the lake and dam were almost completely surrounded by the Green Wattle Creek and Ruined Castle fires.

Regarding the above map, I noticed that the scale in the legend to the above map seemed to be off. Eyeballing it on OpenStreetMap, I think it's wrong by a factor of about 20. Still, that would mean that the area to be evacuated is about 10,000 km².

You are right about the scale and your estimated factor.

I just read but cant find it now, that the length of the fires in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia (the region in the map) is stretching 1000km.
That means there is no one firefighter per 1km fighting the fires.

As I see things Ozz is second only to the USA in the amount of climate B.S. they've been fed this past 2 decades?

It is their 'expurgations' to the TAR documents that make them as wishy washy as we find them?

As long as they've got dirty coal to sell the 'top dogs' will be loathe to cross the deniers after filling them full of B.S. for so long?

Maybe the 'tops dogs' should be on their fiddles right now?.......

The knowledge about CO2 warming the atmosphere is established in physics for over 100 years. It's inside of a set of truths.

Truths and opinions are different things. If you feel strongly about something this is related to the latter.

Lets test this, Tom. Would you be able to determine if the following sentence is a lie or the truth? >> Water is wet.

If yes, why is that so?

Bingo. The fossil money it is. Plus, the fossil heads being dependent on it and voting for more.

Regarding the deniers, psychiatry would be more apt than law. Who drives a car but denies steam engine physics obviously has a severe mental disorder.

(Would a Hiroshima style destruction of a whole suburb by a fire thunder storm with a 100km front of raining embers be convincing Australians? Nope. Meanwhile methinks the only effective thing would be nuking their coal mines. Did the Great Cattle Holocaust of 2019 make any impression? Nope. https://edition.cnn.com/videos/world/2019/02/13/australia-cattle-death-flooding-queensland-ja-lon-orig.cnn )

And the "fact" that the sun revolves around the Earth was established in astronomy for 1500 years, and "fake" news on this was prosecuted by law. Just ask Galileo.

Researchers from the University of Sydney estimate around 480 million animals have been killed by the blazes since they began in September, The Times reports. Among the victims are up to 8,000 koalas – almost a third of the New South Wales koala population – which have perished along the country’s eastern coast.
