Rwenzori Mountains Glaciers
« on: October 22, 2023, 09:08:03 AM »
This is one of three mountain ranges in Africa that still has glaciers on them, so I'm finally making a thread to document them, as has been done for Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.
As on the other mountains, glaciers are melting.

There are three different peaks forming a triangle that (used to) have glaciers a few decades ago. However, it appears that by now, the glaciers on one peak has completely melted, and another only has a small fragment left.

Perhaps one silver lining is that this mountain sees very little direct sun. When looking through satellite pictures, it was almost constantly overcast. I had to look through more than a year to find one image with clear skies. Though, perhaps the high humidity is actually worse for melting than insolation, I don't know.

I have attached an animation showing the difference between the glaciers in 2019 and 2023, as well as a map of how the glaciers used to look, with labels.
