"It would be nice to know what becomes of the guards, where will they go and what jobs will they take when the army is done with them?"

O my. does anyone not know the provenance of torture ? This did not arise ex nihilo. A lot of the national guard units at abu ghraib were prison jailers at home. These guys were brutalizing prisoners in the USA long before they were given leave work out the CIA's worst fantasies on Iraqis.

For example:

"As of this past summer, the prison administration estimated that of about 700 prison employees, twenty-nine staff, twenty-six of whom were guards, were currently on active duty. Another thirty-seven had been activated at some point since 2001 but had since returned to the prison.

https://www.thenation.com/article/seeds-abu-ghraib/

Another one is terrorizing people on the streets of NYC:

http://gothamist.com/2015/09/23/abu_ghraib_cop_lombardo.php

These scum do walk among us. The Taguba report names some.

www.npr.org/iraq/2004/prison_abuse_report.pdf

He lost his job, a Major General, no less for that one. Since then he has accused the Bush admin of war crime.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Taguba

And who can forget Professor Yoo at Berkeley.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Yoo

These creatures (forgive me, I cannot call them men or women) do walk among us. I hope I never meet any of them, I might throw up.

Peter Arnett must be furious. I wasn't aware of his daughter's connection with Yoo.

The Opioid crisis

The following is select quotes from within the article.

In April 2016, at the height of the deadliest drug epidemic in U.S. history, Congress effectively stripped the Drug Enforcement Administration of its most potent weapon against large drug companies suspected of spilling prescription narcotics onto the nation’s streets.
By then, the opioid war had claimed 200,000 lives, more than three times the number of U.S. military deaths in the Vietnam War.
The chief advocate of the law that hobbled the DEA was Rep. Tom Marino, a Pennsylvania Republican. It passed after Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) negotiated a final version with the DEA.
The new law makes it virtually impossible for the DEA to freeze suspicious narcotic shipments from the companies, according to internal agency and Justice Department documents and an independent assessment by the DEA’s chief administrative law judge in a soon-to-be-published law review article. That powerful tool had allowed the agency to immediately prevent drugs from reaching the street.
Political action committees representing the industry contributed at least $1.5 million to the 23 lawmakers who sponsored or co-sponsored four versions of the bill, including nearly $100,000 to Marino and $177,000 to Hatch. Overall, the drug industry spent $102 million lobbying Congress on the bill and other legislation between 2014 and 2016, according to lobbying reports.
Besides the sponsors and co-sponsors of the bill, few lawmakers knew the true impact the law would have. It sailed through Congress and was passed by unanimous consent, a parliamentary procedure reserved for bills considered to be noncontroversial. The White House was equally unaware of the bill’s import when President Barack Obama signed it into law, according to interviews with former senior administration officials.

In 2017, Hatch was one of 22 senators to sign a letter[92] to President Donald Trump urging the President to have the United States withdraw from the Paris Agreement. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Hatch has received over $470,000 from oil, gas and coal interests since 2012….  source wiki

Marino was nominee for Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.[1] He withdrew on October 17, 2017 following reports that he was the chief architect behind a bill that protected opioid manufacturers and crippled the DEA's ability to combat the opioid epidemic  .. source wiki

DuPont and C-8 poisoning:

"Our calculation shows that even if DuPont managers could have forecasted all future legal liabilities, they would have preferred to pollute as long as they thought that the probability of getting caught was less than 19%. Given the extreme set of unlikely events that led to the payment of heavy legal fines, and given the fact that other C8 users (like 3M) have escaped such heavy legal liability, we conclude that at that time polluting without abating was a reasonable bet by DuPont’s decision makers. Thus, it was value-maximizing for DuPont to pollute..."

Straight outta Kafka.

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/10/24/judge-orders-3-uss-cole-defense-lawyers-guantanamo-they-quit.html

Guantanamo defense lawyers quit due to breach of privilege of attorney client communication.
--
"They cited a cascading ethical conflict over a lack of confidence in the confidentiality of their privileged conversations with Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri at Guantanamo, but the details are classified."
--

Judge won't let them.

--
"But the case judge, Air Force Col. Vance Spath, wrote in an Oct. 16 order that, while Baker "purported to find good cause" to approve their leaving the case, Spath, as judge, has not. "Accordingly, Mr. Kammen, Ms. Eliades, and Ms. Spears remain counsel of record in this case, and are ordered to appear at the next scheduled hearing," Spath wrote."

...

" You've got attorneys saying, 'I believe I've been released.' You've got the chief defense attorney saying, 'I have released them.' You've got a judge saying, 'I don't believe it works that way.' Who decides?"
--

Kangaroo courts and show trials.

Some people still want to do the right thing.

--
“It turned out I knew two of the three Aero principals well,” Caison said during a tour around the airport the day before the commission’s hearings convened. “These were prominent, well-respected business people in our community. Their children and mine were schoolmates. I baked their gingerbread houses for Christmas.”

She is either very brave or very stupid, and I have no doubt that she's as sharp as a tack.

At some point we need something like a truth and reconciliation commission. This can't be done until Gitmo and the decades of sanctioned torture have ended.
Prosecuting the guilty would cripple the country. The Nuremberg trials did nothing but prove that the victors were as unforgiving as the vanquished.

C. S. Lewis, a keen and pitiless observer of the human condition, had this to say:

--
The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid "dens of crime" that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voices.
--

This is from his preface to the Screwtape letters. There is a wonderful reading of the book by Michael Palin on youtube.

This shocks the conscience, or at least my conscience. 22k+6k fake convictions coming out of one corrupt lab, aided and abetted by prosecutors and law enforcement over many years. This is about as far away from a justice system as you can get.

What makes this newsworthy is that the prosecutors were found guilty of their crimes.

In this strange and terrible land of the free and home of the brave torturers are not subject to criminal lawsuits. Only civil ones. But the tortured might extract some money. So mebbe they'll get a bone to gnaw as they reflect on the benevolence of Empire.

A slaveowner and Founding Father once said: "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever." Apparently his justice has been taking a long nap.

First as tragedy, and then as farce. The USA now finds that it's own military and civilian lawyers refuse to participate in kangaroo courts:

" ...  Brig. Gen. John Baker, who supervises all of the defense teams at Guantánamo, sent a memo warning that he could no longer assure defense attorneys of privileged conversations with their clients anywhere at the naval base. "

" ... years of government intrusions and surveillance ... meeting rooms bugged with microphones hidden in smoke detectors and an FBI attempt to turn a defense lawyer into an informant."

"The exact information, like much else at Guantánamo, remains classified ... "

"Col. Vance Spath, has called the defense claims of an ethical breach “fake news,”  ... Spath’s rulings on the matter remain classified ..."

"Kammen, Eliades, and Spears submitted their resignations ...Spath has continually recalled them back to the war court, orders they have resisted. He held Baker – a Marine Corps general – in contempt and sentenced him to 21 days of confinement at Guantánamo, ... "

" ... proposals for a new “clean facility” for attorney-client meetings to try to assuage the lawyers’ concerns – but the specs for the facility include “control and listening rooms.” "

"Kammen described the options Spath gave him as “either come to GTMO and resume unethical representation or go to jail. "

"Piette told the New York Times last month, “There is no way I qualify as learned counsel.”"

"[Spath] nonetheless advised that he [Piette] employ “self-help” to become trained as learned counsel, later suggesting that a short course would help a lawyer with no homicide experience to take on one of the most important capital cases in U.S. history."

" ...  rectal feeding, being kenneled like a dog, and mock executions ... much remains classified."

What you are reporting is Fake News.

The FBI would never ever do anything that might even tangentially be perceived as illegal, immoral, illicit, corrupt, nefarious, unethical, unconstitutional or "crooked".

Here's some more fake news: Texas judge resorts to electric shocks on a defendant

"Judges are not allowed to shock defendants in their courtrooms just because they won’t answer questions, the court said, or because they fail to follow the court’s rules of decorum ..."

Gee, you think ?

" ...  not an operant conditioning collar ... "

" ... the stun belt can cause the person to seize, suffer heart irregularities, urinate or defecate ..."

"“Hit him again,” the judge ordered."

Nice defense counsel, too:

"trial defense attorney, Bill Ray, told Texas Lawyer he didn’t object to use of stun belt during trial ...he did not believe Morris was really being shocked."

" ... lest we allow practices like these to affront the very dignity of the proceedings we seek to protect and lead our courts to drift from justice into barbarism."

Little late for that. Last sentence is a classic:

" ... declined to comment, citing judicial ethics."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/03/07/barbarism-texas-judge-ordered-electric-shocks-to-man-during-trial-conviction-thrown-out/

Remind me not to get busted in Texas.

After reading the first comment I'm wondering if this is yet another attack that the FBI could have prevented, if that had been their objective. The fact that the FBI lied to the lawyers, the judge and the jury sadly seems hardly newsworthy.

Magna, I think the implication is that when "W" (George W. Bush) was POTUS, he was so dim and controlled that Cheney was the de facto POTUS.

Evict the old and the sick from nursing homes. They're just a drag on society:

"sending nursing home eviction notices Thursday to more than 30,000 residents "

"The goal of the department is to give notice to all affected people as soon as possible in order that they begin developing their appropriate plans."

Better to find that nice cozy overpass bridge to live under.

" budget begins July 1, which is when the evictions could technically begin."

It's be nice and warm then. The pleasures of outdoor living.

" ... one of the state's safety net hospitals, Lafayette General, sent notices to 800 employees that the medical center will close and they will lose their jobs under the budget being debated now. The other safety net hospitals are expected to follow suit."

Safety net ? those old fucks don't deserve one.

"There is no place for them to go."

Plenty of unoccupied sidewalks ... until we jail em for vagrancy ...

"This make us look heartless,"

No shit.

"Nothing is more important than fixing this budget"

Dear god. These lawmakers are moral voids.

You're supposed to let us know when it's an onion editorial. >:(

Las Vegas had a law against feeding the homeless that was actively enforced, and every now and then they'd run through the Hoovervilles with bulldozers.
Turning on the park sprinklers each night was also effective in keeping the city looking sharp, though my personal favorite was the posted warnings against "loitering" in parks.

So, so many trails of tears:

" ...  the Pickering Treaty, the agreement was signed in 1794 between the federal government and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, or the Six Nations ..."

"... signed without ratifying seals or ribbons — like 17 other unratified treaties signed by representatives of the U.S. government and Native American nations ..."

" ... lawmakers pressured the U.S. Senate not to ratify the treaties ..."

"The answer is always gold," she says. "And if it's not gold, it's silver. And if it's not silver, it's copper. And if it's not, go right through the metal chart."

"... citizens of the U.S., these are your treaties. "

"This was our land."

Read and weep.

I'm lucky to live in such a good country (Netherlands)
We don't have the problems you are talking about, New York has more then 60.000 homeless people on a total population of 8.5 million)

We have a total of 30.000 homeless people in our whole country (17 million population)

When you visit Amsterdam you'll see maybe 5 beggars in total if you are lucky that's it.

Few developed countries are as bad as the US wrt homelessness. But The Netherlands could do even better if they stopped their moves toward criminalizing squats (mostly a result of racism as immigrants become a bigger and more visible part of the mix in some squates, according to my daughter who is living there now).

I am against squatting since we have organizations where you can get a living space for only ~125 euro a month (light and gas included)  It's called an Anti-Sqautting organisation there are a whole bunch of them nowadays.

I've also lived in such a place, was a very nice apartment. It was the first place i lived when i left home. I paid 125 euro for a 2 room apartment about 70 m2 big in an old pastorial building next to an old church, it was great, had a really good time there !

I left Las Vegas in 2004 and made my way back to Canada. No homeless problems locally. The city built quite an elegant facility, then found they needed to import some have-nots from other communities to keep the place occupied. :P

The count of homeless really depends on how you define it. In Chicago, individuals and families are counted as homeless if they are uncertain where they will be sleeping tonight. This allows the city to capture the thousands who work to secure temporary sleeping arrangements with family and friends, sleeping in basements, garages etc. (sofa surfing). These arrangements are temporary as the families that are providing such shelter are usually struggling themselves. For this reason, the homeless shuffle about with periodic spells living on the streets.

Using this definition, Chicago, a city of 2.7 million, has slightly over 100,000 homeless and the Chicago Public schools count 15,000 of their students as homeless. Imagine how difficult it must be to concentrate at school when you're not sure where you will be sleeping tonight.

The richest country in the world and we refuse to provide the very basics for a substantial portion of our citizens.

Another old cold warrior bites the dust. Good.

"in a 1998 New York Times interview, he took credit for the Havana bombings"

"he was accused of coordinating the 1976 bombing of the Cuban airliner that exploded over the Caribbean shortly after taking off from Barbados. Posada was arrested when two men who worked for his small firm confessed to planting the bombs."

"he helped the Reagan administration and U.S. Army Col. Oliver North resupply neighboring Nicaragua's rightist Contra rebels against the left-leaning Sandinista government."

"he was convicted in Panama in connection with a failed assassination attempt against Castro."

"The U.S. refused to turn him over to Venezuela or Cuba"

The Wall Street Journal keeps peddling Big Oil propaganda
The WSJ disguises climate misinformation as “opinion”

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Opinion page has long had a conservative skew, and unfortunately that has extended to politicizing climate change with biased and factually inaccurate editorials.

Quote
Over the past several weeks, the WSJ’s attacks on climate science have gone into overdrive. On May 15th, the Opinion page published a self-contradictory editorial from the lifelong contrarian and fossil fuel-funded Fred Singer that so badly rejected basic physics, it prompted one researcher to remark, “If this were an essay in one of my undergraduate classes, he would fail.”

The WSJ did publish a letter to the editor (LTE) from real climate scientists Andrea Dutton and Michael Mann rebutting Singer’s editorial. However, it gave the last word to science deniers in an LTE response rejecting the well-established facts that sea level rise is accelerating and Antarctic is loss is contributing to it.

A few days later, the WSJ opinion page was at it again, publishing an editorial by Stephen F. Hayward, who describes himself as having “spent most of my adult life in conservative think tanks in Washington, D.C.,” and it shows. Hayward has a long history as a climate naysayer, spanning over a decade back to his days with the fossil fuel-funded American Enterprise Institute.

Some people are of the opinion that the Earth is flat, but the WSJ and The Hill probably wouldn’t publish Flat Earthers’ editorials. Of course, the Flat Earth Society doesn’t have the financial and political clout of the fossil fuel industry.

Oh, Sidd. It is sickening, and totally and utterly useless. And the sickness will travel from Guantanamo into society back in the USA.

Who knows what the effect is on the people who are doing this. For the staff of Gunatanamo, this is their normality. What do they do when they have finished their tour of duty and go home ?
How do they cope in a society that at least for the most part could not and would not do what they have done as a daily routine ?
How do their families and friends cope when, as I know too well, they spill their guts on what they did?

"And the sickness will travel from Guantanamo into society back in the USA."

I think the sickness we see exposed in Guantanamo and elsewhere is a symptom of deeper flaws in the body politic of the USA. The nation treats its own dispossessed very badly; it is not surprising that foreigners are treated worse. Some of these abhorrent practises date back to the days of slavery. Thus, I think that the evils originated within the nation.

I give you Gina Haspel, supervising the demolition of a human being for the greater glory of Empire.

--
... Mitchell and Jessen threw him to the floor and the "security team" ripped off his clothes, shaved his head "while subject moaned and wailed," and locked him in the confinement box at 0445 hours. According to former CIA lawyer John Rizzo, a prisoner could stand in this "large" box roughly the size of a coffin, while the "small" box reserved for shorter stays was only big enough to "curl up" in. The cable below established that Nashiri stayed in the confinement box for over 12 hours, until 1703 ...

... multiple applications of the walling technique, and ultimately, multiple applications of the watering technique ...

The water treatment was applied at 1214 hours," after which "Interrogators covered subject's head with the hood and left him on the water board, moaning, shaking and asking God to help him repeatedly ...

Likening the conditioning process to tenderizing a fine steak, interrogators told subject that perhaps he similarly just needed conditioning and 'tenderizing' to be ready for what interrogators were asking of him." This was after extended sessions of physical violence, wall slamming, box confinement, sleep deprivation, forced nudity, shackling, stress positions, and waterboarding ...

--

That human being's name was Al-Nashiri, currently held in Guantanamo.

Read if you have the stomach.

I give you Lockheed-Martin, an exemplar of bleeding edge technology in the USA. And worldwide. Mostly worldwide.

The bleeding happens to unimportant people far away, well away from the USA.

---

 ... a 500-pound (227 kilogram) laser-guided MK 82 bomb made by Lockheed Martin ...

Of the 51 people who died in the airstrike, 40 were children ...

"I saw the bomb hit the bus," one witness said. "It blew it into those shops and threw the bodies clear to the other side of those buildings. We found bodies scattered everywhere, there was a severed head inside the bomb crater. When we found that, that was when I started running. I was so afraid."
