The first day of above average extent loss since around three weeks. A single event or a start into a period of faster than average losses?

Typically when the ice has remained high for this long, it is followed by faster losses.  I would guess we should start seeing some above average losses.

Extent is measured as area, not volume. Winds can spread the sea ice, but that new ice would be relatively thin and should melt rapidly once holes form and sea water is exposed to sunlight for many hours each day.
