You mean I cannot celebrate 3 years of "recovery"? (in any meaningful way)
 :o ::) :P

In my not particularly humble opinion (IMNPHO), no - you cannot. Maybe (or maybe not) all that extra sea ice is because the Antarctic Continental ice sheet is losing mass at an accelerating rate (very cold freshwater forming a lower density surface layer on top of warmer salty ocean water).

But then who needs meaning to celebrate? Where's the booze?

That's part of it, but I recall a study which concluded that the main reason was that stronger katabatic winds were pushing existing near-coast ice further out, allowing more ice to form on the coast.

The ice was all around:
It crack'd and growl'd, and roar'd and howl'd,

Antarctica ice is at the middle of the satellite record, maybe even above average. Is the southern ice area/extent immune to the early AGW we have had?

I believe an argument is that the sea ice is protected by cold and non-saline meltwater from the Antarctic continent. And the more the continent melts due to global warming, the more the sea ice is protected. So this leads to the sea ice being in equilibrium regardless of whether the global temperature goes up or down, at least up to a point. We can see something similar happening around Greenland as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_blob_(North_Atlantic)

Gero, do you have a 365-day average trend graph for the Antarctic? I'd expect that if you do, then it'd probably show a flat trend like the monthly average graphs, but would be interested all the same.

We have had a slight cooling trend in the Antarctica region (60S-90S) for the last 40 years,
as seen in attached graph. The temperature anomaly trend since 1979 is -0.002C per month, -0.023C per year, or -0.69C per 30 years. Data from CFSR.

Thus we shouldn't be too surprised that sea ice extent keeps a corresponding position in the table. (Presumably, bottom melt doesn't affect sea ice extent too much?)

Interestingly, global warming comes with some exceptions.

Quoting the temperature data for 60 to 90 degrees South can be misleading when using it to comment on Antarctic sea ice.

The area of 60 to 90 South is about 34 million km2.
The area of the Antarctic Continent is about 14 million km2, with coastal temperatures averaging about -10 celsius, and at high elevations of the interior averaging at around -60 celsius. The 60 to 90 average temperatures are thus dominated by the continental temperatures. The climate of the surrounding ocean is thus vastly different from the continental climate.

This is even more pronounced at this time of year, when the sea ice edge is between 55 and 65 degrees south. Here it is the Antarctic Circumpolar Current that is important.

Gero, do you have a 365-day average trend graph for the Antarctic? I'd expect that if you do, then it'd probably show a flat trend like the monthly average graphs, but would be interested all the same.
Yes

Flat it is not.

"Flat" is not the word for anything but the linear trend so far, true.  Thank you for sharing that!

I made another plot, now for the sector closest to the Antarctic coast, from 60S to 70S. Thus excluding the Antarctic land mass.
The trend is the same, pronounced cooling over 40 years.

overall the ocean is warmer but the amount of fresh cold surface water is increasing due to increasing glacier melt. There was a paper about it someone posted on this forum a while back. The water below the surface is much warmer. Whenever it gets stirred up it melts surface ice and the ocean is exposed even in winter. It doesn't look like it is still increasing it looks more like it has leveled off to me. Though it will be another decade before its clear if it is leveling off. Its why antarctic ice extent has been expanding while arctic ice is decreasing. It may eventually lead to more ice around greenland though that is far from certain.

And when you add the post by interstitial you start to see a more complete story of maybe why the sea ice average is barely changed over the last 40 years but warmer ocean water is attacking  ice shelves and glaciers, to a considerable extent from underneath.

I wonder what a 50 to 60 South graph would look like.

 Southern Ocean Warming
Jean-Baptiste Sallée
Published Online: August 15, 2018
ABSTRACT
Quote
The Southern Ocean plays a fundamental role in global climate. With no continental barriers, it distributes climate signals among the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans through its fast-flowing, energetic, and deep-reaching dominant current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The unusual dynamics of this current, in conjunction with energetic atmospheric and ice conditions, make the Southern Ocean a key region for connecting the surface ocean with the world ocean’s deep seas. Recent examinations of global ocean temperature show that the Southern Ocean plays a major role in global ocean heat uptake and storage. Since 2006, an estimated 60%–90% of global ocean heat content change associated with global warming is based in the Southern Ocean. But the warming of its water masses is inhomogeneous. While the upper 1,000 m of the Southern Ocean within and north of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current are warming rapidly, at a rate of 0.1°–0.2°C per decade, the surface subpolar seas south of this region are not warming or are slightly cooling. However, subpolar abyssal waters are warming at a substantial rate of ~0.05°C per decade due to the formation of bottom waters on the Antarctic continental shelves. Although the processes at play in this warming and their regional distribution are beginning to become clear, the specific mechanisms associated with wind change, eddy activity, and ocean-ice interaction remain areas of active research, and substantial challenges persist to representing them accurately in climate models.

We live in a 3d world.

Animals can be driven crazy by placing too many in too small a pen. Homo sapiens is the only animal that voluntarily does this to himself.

JAXA data - October monthly sea ice average

Up and down like a yo-yo ending up after 42 years at 18.31 million km2, just 362k above 1979, and a mere 138k above a pretty meaningless linear trend with a least squares correlation of just 0.03.

Just one other part - the Arctic, and yes, started in mid 1978, so 1979 was the first full year

Just wondering when Antarctic sea ice extent will start to show substantial losses, higher than average. There is much more ice to melt than in many other years...

For me, the surprising thing is that the fast ice around coasts and glaciers usually breaks off close to the shoreline and then drifts away towards warmer seas. (This is apparently driven by up-welling water and off-shore winds??)
Because the breaks start occurring in the spring season the air temperatures and incident radiation levels are low so that the new open water often freezes quickly maintaining the ice area.
In the meantime the out-flowing ice pushes the outer edge of the sea-ice against its melting zone, tending to maintain a high ice area. (This season has more ice movement away from the coastline?)
The newer ice close to the coast is more vulnerable to the higher levels of incident radiation later in the melting season so I expect there may be more melt this year than "averages" predict    .    .    .
