A double century sea ice extent gain on this day after a 172k extent gain on the previous day. One more day like that and we have an event. In any case, total sea ice extent moved from 24th lowest to 30th lowest in those 2 days. In which seas?

A Look at NSIDC data - 5 day trailing averages as at 26th June

Area has a very different freezing season profile from extent.
On the 25th February sea ice area was 2nd lowest in the 43 year satellite record, and on this day is 7th highest.

Sea ice extent on the 25th Feb was 11th lowest in the 43 year satellite record, and on this day is 16th highest.

This is reflected in the sea ice concentration percentages.
On the 25th February sea ice concentration was 2nd lowest in the 43 year satellite record, and on this day is 3rd highest.

Not that the data gives any better idea of what is happening way down there in the Antarctic

8 notches up in the ranking list in two days...
This shows how close many of the years are.
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

A look at NSIDC Data

While Antarctic sea ice extent stays close to the 2010's average, sea ice area is well above, leading to sea ice concentration 3rd highest in the satellite record.

The extra sea ice area is mainly in the Ross and Weddell Seas.

This probably means that sea ice volume is high as well.

& here are the table and graphs of the Antarctic 365 daydaily extent averages.

After increasing above the (meaningless) linear trend on the 8th May, the current average at 11.72 million km2 is now above that trend by 60k km2. It is also above the record low minimum of the 5th October 2017 by 1.23 million km2.

I am clueless as to what happens next.

JAXA Sea ice extent data - some more

The 365 day trailing average of sea ice extent has been mostly increasing since the minimum reached on 5/Oct/2017. It is now 1.24 million km2 above that minimum, and 72k above the (meaningless) linear trend.

The latest projection of the September monthly average of sea ice extent is 18.95 million km2, 381k km2 above the equally meaningless linear trend, and 38th lowest, 6th highest, in the 43 year satellite record.

Missed hitting the 2014 high by a fraction.  Looks like it will try again in August.

What was a very average feezing season has in the last month become unusual.
A month ago sea ice extent was 23rd highest, almost exactly halfway between lowest and highest in the 43 year record. Now it is 4th highest.

Average freeze from now to maximum would result in both the September daily extent and the September monthly average at 3rd highest in the satellite record. (In 2020 the rankings were 22nd and 16th highest).

More from JAXA Data

The above average sea ice extent gains in July have had an effect.

The July 21 monthly average of 16.35 million km2 is 0.71 million km2 above July 20, and 0.33 milliion km2 above the long-term linear trend.

The projected September 21 monthly average of 16.35 million km2 is 0.33 million km2 above Sept 20, and 0.40 milliion km2 above the long-term linear trend.

Similarly, the 365 day average is climbing strongly, now 1.28 million km2 above the record low on 5/10/17 and 111k km2 above the long-term linear trend.
