The sea ice does appear to be a bit thin in the Lincoln Sea these days.

" Your comments and thoughts, please."
Far from shore, I suspect that the pressure gradient between the Arctic and Labrador seas is increasingly being met by deep currents of Atlantic waters making their way around N. Greenland through Nares and into Baffin. If Petermann breaks soon that would add confidence to my thoughts, as the breakout of waters from the north side of Humbolt already has. IF my guess has merit then the surface flows, normally southbound become more prone to tidal, even wind, driven changes. So whilst the ice coming from the north will be driven against the coast of Ellesmere to accelerate it to equilibrium with tangential rotational speed once the surface flow is northbound the ice will switch sides and be slowed down by Greenland.

A very rare sight, the Icebreaker Oden of Sweden, will start the returntrip down Nares Stræde today, after visiting Sherard Osborne Fjord / Ryder Gletscher for more than week, it is the first time I observed a vessel this far north along the northwest coast of Greenland.
Have a ice day!

Think we will see it on satellite pictures?

You will have to ask CIA or someone similar and ask them to turn the "special" resolution on.
But that said, the traces from the Icebreaker could be seen when they were breaking the sea ice in Sherard Osborne Fjord a few days ago.
Have a ice day!

Yesterdays Sentinel shots from the area are cloud-free. I spend an hour or so looking for Oden, but no success. I'm thinking of emailing them and ask for an orange deck paint job!! ;)

Hmmmmmm

ECMWF models -1˚C. << That was me not paying attention. It was set to a date in the future.  :-[
The actual temperature it was showing was 3˚C.

Oden reports over 6˚C.

Good find blum.

Hmmm :)
28.1 m/s = (*3.6) 101 Km/h = (*2.25) 63.2 mph    A stiff breeze!

blumenkraft, your sentinel-hub link doesn't work because you missed the final parenthetic bracket in the url.

Wow. A 100 km/h wind at 6C is a real bitch for ice. I wonder at what height the measurement is taken.

And again we have a bright spot on Sentinel radar pictures where Oden is supposed to be according to the logs (at Petermann). This should be enough confirmation already that we indeed see Oden here.

This is Lincoln only this time.

Made Kane and Kennedy as well, so if someone wants them i can upload them. But there is really nothing to see despite stationary icebergs. Floes are a rare occurrence these days in these regions.

The ice floes in the upper strait are getting jiggled in by tidal forces. Coriolis force might also play a role. In the RAMMB Slider thread, i posted a GIF where it looks like there is a mellow surface current in the lower strait.

Those static icebergs in Kane Basin are starting to degrade slowly.

You can count floes in Kane with one hand by now.

According to the weather forecast, we'll see strong southward winds in the Strait in the upcoming days. This could lead to export.

Recently, only the tidally driven wiggling pulled some floes inside.
