My grandfather, near your location, says he can't breathe from the heat and humidity. He's 99 years old. I fear he's not going to make it through the summer.  :(

What keeps me is a family afternoon time spent on the river..., water temp 28+ C.

Obama wants the U.S. to build the world's first exascale computer
Quote
The White House quietly issued the executive order on supercomputing Wednesday, creating a government-wide program that would seek to better align various government agencies toward achieving key benchmarks in computing power.

A petaflop is a computer with the ability to perform one quadrillion arithmetic operations per second, while an exascale computing system would have the capability to operate at 1,000 petaflops.

High performance computing is increasingly integral to the U.S. economy High performance computing is increasingly integral to the U.S. economy, be it forecasting the weather, simulating global warming, conducting war games or designing and testing nuclear weapons.

In recent years, the U.S. has fallen behind far other nations when it comes to its computing power used for weather forecasting, a fact that was highlighted by the superior performance of the main European weather model in forecasting Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

At the other end of the scale from ASIF's main topics is hair ice:

The presence of fungus on rotting wood, which contains a recrystallisation inhibitor, enables it to develop into thin hairs with diameters of just 0.01 millimeters (0.0004 inches), and helps to keep the strands in this shape over several hours at temperatures close to 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius). More fascinating pictures and links to more about the story at Live Science:

This year, 2015, is a watershed year for the climate movement. In December governments will converge in Paris where they are expected to forge a new, international climate agreement that is robust, ambitious and comensurate with the scientific imperatives outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We believe that their ambition has to be driven by a bigger, broader and stronger citizens’ movement.

Faith communities increasingly recognise that the climate crisis is also a moral crisis.

In a blockbuster study released Wednesday in Nature, a team of 38 scientists finds that the planet is home to 3.04 trillion trees, blowing away the previously estimate of 400 billion. That means, the researchers say, that there are 422 trees for every person on Earth.

However, in no way do the researchers consider this good news. The study also finds that there are 46 percent fewer trees on Earth than there were before humans started the lengthy, but recently accelerating, process of deforestation.

At Guardian: Labour leadership: Jeremy Corbyn elected with huge mandate

Election of backbench MP and anti-war campaigner means party now has one of the most leftwing, anti-establishment leaders in its history
Jeremy Corbyn's 'Protecting the Planet' manifesto, published 7th August 2015 at Ecologist.

Quote
We need a renewable energy revolution, an end to fracking, no new nuclear power, efficient homes, and the break up of our energy cartels, writes Jeremy Corbyn, All that, and strong protection for wildlife and oceans, no TTIP trade deal with the US, clean air to breathe, and massive investment in public transport. Is there anything not to like?

... If I insinuated that Tony Abbott is dumb, it’s because he is in fact dumb. His own statements on many subjects is testimony to that alone. But any world leader that denies climate change is a dumb and dangerous leader and not just to their own country, but to the world.

Tony Abbott is also a war-monger and just last week was advocating further bombing of Syria. He’s against refugees landing on Australian shores but seems to have no problem driving refugees onto the boats and into Europe. And when one of his countrymen was slain on the battle field, his response was “shit happens.” ...
