I know the usage is a bit controversial, but since I tend to keep ASIG as a pinned tab in Chrome, I'd like to see 'target="_blank"' added to all the links.  Half the time I forget to open in new tab, and have to then back and start over in order to have both ASIG and the other site open.  I also occasionally lose ASIG and have to find it in my bookmarks.

I'll change that, DR. I was never sure what was best, and so the links at the top open in a new tab, but the links behind the images don't.

One huge problem I have right now, is that the Climate Reanalyzer people have changed their weather maps (yet again), and the new ones now each get their own link based on date, instead of a hot-linked one. Which means the Forecasts page no longer gets updated automatically! To me personally this is really annoying, because I don't like having to click through forecasts.

I've already mailed them, but no answer as of yet.

I'm suffering from the same problem. Please let me know their reply once it arrives!

Didn't DungeonMaster create scripts to get around similar issues in the dim and distant past?

Yes, but he's a busy guy and my guess is this would be a lot of work. So, I don't want to bother him with it.

Okay, I've received an answer:

Quote
Easy solution:  Add javascript to read the file dates.json in the directory for each variable.  This file contains a list of all the dated forecast directories and gets updated with each forecast run:

dates.json <edited the link just in case, N.>

and of course in the directory you can see the complete listing:

t2/ <edited the link just in case, N.>

In short, your js code willl open dates.json and read the first entry in order to get what you need to complete the directory path.

Easy solution...  :D :'(

Does anyone know where I can find such a script, or write one myself? And how do I work that into my HTML code on the ASIG? Will that even work on Google Sites?

Dryland was able to help me with this and has effectively saved the ASIG Forecasts page!

PS Dharma Rupa, clicking on the images now opens a new tab.

I've updated the Concentration Maps for March and April (by adding the 2017 maps).

Last week, I updated the Concentration Maps pages, and made all the images clickable again (for a larger view).

Now I intend to clean up the ASIG front page. Every time it opens in my browser I get a message from my Avast virus software that the links to the Naval Research Laboratory pages are blocked, because of a lack of certificate. I'm also not capable to surf to their homepage, either with Chrome or Firefox. So, I think I'm just going to remove everything that has to do with NRL (thickness distribution map, ice drift map, etc).

There also seems to be a problem with DMI no longer updating the Greenland maps and graphs they had on their website. Polarportal has the same images, but their addresses are dynamic (ie each date has its own file name) and so I can't hotlink to them. I wish I knew how to write scripts...

I'm also going to replace the Webcams page with something else (probably SAT/SLP maps comparison), but that means I have to change the menus on every page, so may take some time.

If anyone has any suggestions for maps/graphs I can link to, or just has links to the top segment of the ASIG daily graphs page, I'm all eyes.

If you could add OSI SAF daily sea ice drift, the map with the little arrows that A-Team refers to a lot. I know it can be find here http://osisaf.met.no/p/osisaf_hlprod_qlook.php?year=2019&month=06&day=02&prod=LR-Drift&area=NH&size=100%25 but not sure if there is a permanent placeholder that can be hotlinked to the ASIG.
Also if it's not on the ASIG, Ascat image of the day. Some folks here where to find it.

Neven, is there any way to exclude some pages from this page:

https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php?action=unread

recently some guy(s) started to spam the forum with new threads on an almost daily basis and they often last 1-2 pages but one post is enought to make it to that list.

for a long long time one had to deal with 1+ a few posts pages on that list, not it are 2-3 pages and to read which to click takes even more time than to open them in a tap all together and then if one doesn't click them now they stay there and clogg the choice even more.

while it would be a huge effort to keep thread spammers in check (except installing i high threshold) if we could exclude not needed/wanted topics from that list we can keep the list short and exclusive to wanted as well as new topics.

just a suggestion for consideration mid/long-term

cheers

Yes, I had a look at the OSI SAF stuff the other day, and that map would be great, but unfortunately the files get different names every day.

As for Ascat, I have the image in the 'Sea ice thickness, volume & age' category further down the page.

Well, that's a suggestion for the ASIF, not the ASIG, and there's a special thread for suggestions here. I believe we've discussed the Recent Unread Topics-page on and off there. It's difficult for me to control it, as it's a personal thing.

Myself, I let the ASIF send me notifications when there's a new comment on threads I'm interested in. And when on the Forum, I also check the Recent Posts-list on the front page. This I can control, and I usually remove threads from there that have little to do with Arctic sea ice and that dominate the list too much (like the Tesla thread or one of the political threads).

I haven't used googlesites in a while, but I know how to write html image references with a variable url. The following solution works with a generic html file (copy everything into a text file, rename ending to html and open in a browser)
You can try putting it into an HTML box in google sites and maybe it will work.

Code: [Select]
<html>
<img id="Greenland">

<script>
var today = new Date();
yesterday = new Date(today - 68400000); //set off time in milliseconds
var dd = String(yesterday.getUTCDate()).padStart(2, '0');
var mm = String(yesterday.getUTCMonth() + 1).padStart(2, '0'); //January is 0!
var yyyy = yesterday.getFullYear();

yesterdaystring = yyyy+mm+dd;

var imageid = "http://polarportal.dk/fileadmin/polarportal/surface/SMB_map_LA_day_EN_"+yesterdaystring+".png";
document.getElementById("Greenland").src = imageid;
</script>

</html>

Edit: changed getDate() to getUTCDate() for same execution worldwide

On the very low part of the ASIG there are two web links "Sea Ice Temperature" and "Istykkelse", both from Danish sources, which could be moved upwards into the section "Sea Surface Temperature" and "Sea Ice Thickness", respectively, where they fit much better than under "Miscellanous".

I've finally come around to updating the ASIG front page, and it just keeps looking better and better.  :)

- I've kicked off the NRL stuff.
- I've added a few links at the top (RAMMB SLIDER)
- I've added a new category called 'melting momentum', with Tealight's AWP graphs, Wipneus compactness and melt extent ratio graphs
- Speaking of Tealight, he helped me out in a fantastic way with a script that allows me to hotlink to maps/graphs with dynamic links. That way I was able to add a lot of Polar Portal stuff in the Greenland category, as well as DMI ice thickness map and graph. Maybe the OSI-SAF sea ice drift map can be added as well, but the URL is more difficult to script.
- I've also made some changes to the Regional Graphs page, removing the compactness graphs, and adding NSIDC regional graphs, as well as the Arctic Basin area and extent graphs.

That's it for now.

You mean the OSI-SAF ice drift map?

I was thinking of several maps particularly first three image boxes, but possibly others as well if there is archive of the images.

Not sure if that breaks up the structure or if that is fixable by displaying latest, year ago, same date from 2012 if available, on a row.

Just a suggestion. If you don't like it or it is too much work, don't worry.

It sounds a bit like what I've done with the Concentration Maps page. But that's all manual work. If I'd have any programming skills, I'd create a site where you can compare everything, and call it the Arctic Archive or something. But just because I would think it's cool, not because I think there is any serious demand for such a thing. I mean, the ASIG gets around 1000 pageviews per day on average, maybe 1500-1800 during peak times.

Looking at the regional section of the ASIG it appears two links are not what they should be.
Below the AMSR2 extent and area graphs are the same graphs for NSIDC. However when clicking on them for enlargement one is directed to the grf section of ArctischePinguin.
https://sites.google.com/site/arctischepinguin/home/sea-ice-extent-area/grf

I believe the proper links that should work permanently are:
https://sites.google.com/site/arctischepinguin/home/sea-ice-extent-area/grf/nsidc-nt-regional-extent-overview.png
https://sites.google.com/site/arctischepinguin/home/sea-ice-extent-area/grf/nsidc-nt-regional-area-overview.png

It's a beautiful webcam image, but the Webcams page on the ASIG is so out of date that I fear that it will be difficult to fill up. It was always the North Pole webcams that were the most interesting, but they are no longer replaced.

I plan on updating the ASIG again some time soon, as many graphs have stopped working.

I've updated the Forecasts page, as none of the images were working. Unfortunately, there aren't any good SLP forecast maps out there, either GFS or ECMWF. Tropical Tidbits has a good one, but it's for the Northern Hemisphere, so you can't see much detail when it's in the size I'm using for the Forecasts page. So, I was forced to use to the Climate Reanalyzer MSLP/Precipitation map which lacks the geopotential height colours for a quick glance.

Oh, well...

I apologize for being so late with updating the SIC maps. I always tend to procrastinate when it comes to tedious jobs. But it's all updated now, all the way to end of November.
Thank you, Neven.  :)
Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Thanks Neven, much appreciated! One of my favourite ways of trying to understand the trends.

In a way, yes. But it's mostly personal circumstances and lack of energy.

A while ago the "DMI N of 80°N temperature graph" gave the opportunity to look at older temperature curves on the left hand side. Now only the actual year is visible. Could you please return to the previous presentation? Thanks.

Oh, well...

I'm a bit late, but have you consider this site ?

You probably need to update adobe on your computer, or to allow adobe to run within your browser  ;)
