Starting on April 7th from Spitzbergen to North Pole - how will they get there?!:

A polynesian sailing canoe might send the right message.

It seems they've already flown most of the way:

They are now heading towards Barneo base somewhere around 89' north. From there they will ski with laden sleds across the frozen Arctic ocean to the north pole.

Hi Terry,

Yes, an Umiak could make this trip easily, especially if they go straight North up the lead following 84 E longitude (the geographic N Pole is at the upper left of this MODIS image).

Oh, and bring extra Inuit dogs. Might get hungry later. ;)

Cheers!

Hi Lodger,

An Umiak could make this trip easily.

Perhaps my irony was too subtle? They've already flown most of the way!

A polynesian sailing canoe might send the right message.

Does that "send the right message"?

The latest news from the North Pole:

How about that?

Indeed Jim, as was mine  ::)

Here's a video blog entry from the article:

Josefina Skerk (Sweden) is one of four young ambassadors trekking to the North Pole in April to place a flag and a time capsule on the North Pole seabed calling for the protection of the Arctic. Through this video letter she is making an appeal on the Arctic Council.

Cheers!

Hi Lodger,

I didn't mean to imply that you or Terry missed my understated message. I was rather hoping for some additional comment from the OP though.

Seems they are facing a southward ice drift.

Let's hope they get to the North Pole before it is ice-free  ;D
