Yesterday's values (12.04 in the Arctic, 7.78 M kmĀ² around Antartica) are close to the 2010s average in the Arctic, and one day ahead around Antarctica. This sums up to 1 day (0 + 1 = 1).
These differences are larger when compared to earlier decadal averages:
            Arctic     Antarctica    sum
2000s    10 d        + 2 d         12 d
1990s    20 d        + 1 d         21 d
1980s    28 d        + 1 d         29 d

Interestingly the decadal averages of JAXA sea ice extent around Antarctica are almost identical (which means there is no significant trend at this time of the year)
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

JAXA Data - a bit more

The December Monthly Average at 21.75 million km2 is 7th lowest in the satellite record, and 0.20 million km2 above the trend value fro Derc 20. This is a product of Antarctic sea ice recovery offset partially by subdued Arctic sea ice extent gains.

The 365 Day Trailing Average is currently on the increase. Once again this is a product of Antarctic sea ice recovery partially offset by Arctic sea ice extent currently being below 2019 levels.

The plume shows that even with only 6 weeks to go to the minimum, the range of outcomes from the last 10 years remaining melt is still more than 3.5 million km2.

Yesterday's values (13.21 in the Arctic, 3.97 M kmĀ² around Antartica) are close to the 2010s average in the Arctic, and two days ahead around Antarctica. This sums up to 2 days (0 + 2 = 2).
These differences are larger when compared to earlier decadal averages:
            Arctic     Antarctica    sum
2000s    14 d        + 4 d         18 d
1990s    26 d        + 3 d         29 d
1980s    34 d        + 1 d         35 d

Interestingly the decadal averages of JAXA sea ice extent around Antarctica are almost identical (which means there is no significant trend at this time of the year)
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

JAXA Data -a bit more

How low can it go?
I attach a table comparing extent on this day with minima in previous years.
Currently this day's extent would place the 2021 minimum in 12th lowest place, with anything between 14 and 31 further days of ever diminishing extent losses.

I also attach the January monthly average graph based on actuals to 22nd Jan + average extent change to month end. The result would be an average extent of 17.69 million km2, 9th lowest in the satellite record, and almost exactly on the linear trend.

SarahShards, welcome. I note that this post is a bit odd, it does not relate to the thread's subject of global sea ice (global=Arctic+Antarctic) and it does not give the reason for the stated expectation. However, I give more leeway and encouragement to new members, so I've approved it anyway.

JAXA GLOBAL SEA ICE EXTENT:  17,040,340 KM2 as at 25-Jan-2021

- Extent loss on this day 32k, 1 k less than the average loss on this day (of the last 10 years) of 33k,
- Extent loss from maximum on this date is -8.15 million km2, 0.27 million km2 (3%) less than the 10 year average loss of -8.42 million km2.

- Extent is at position #8 in the satellite record

On average 93.5% of sea ice loss  from maximum to minimum done, and 19 days to minimum

Projections of the Unknown Quantity. (Table JAXA-AA1)

Average remaining sea ice loss (of the last 10 years) would produce a minimum in February 2021 of 16.46 million km2, 0.90 million km2 above the 2018 record low minimum of 15.55 million km2.

JAXA Data - a bit more

Both graphs attached show the influence of the increase in Antarctic Extent.

The Jan monthly average graph attached shows Jan21 average extent at 17.69 million KM2 just 38k above the long-term linear trend and 143k above Jan 20.

The 365 day trailing average table and graph show that after a long period of the average increasing, there are tentative signs of a reduction in the average.

With as far as I am concerned, the total uncertainty of what happens next with Antarctic sea ice, I have not a clue on what happens next.
