I could not the video within your link, however,
I had met the then skipper of Vega in 2000 in the Panama Canal Zone. Chris and I had discussions about the French Nuclear test in Moruroa and how he ran the French blockade and subsequently taunted the French. After his capture (the first time) his quick release promoted by Green Peace allowed him to do it again.
He was late by one day and missed his early demise when he was not on the Rainbow Warrior when the French blew it up in New Zealand.
He was an amazing fellow; I watched and had a conversation with him as he weaved a new end on his galvanized standing rigging. (not an easy thing to do). He was on his way to deliver his report about Japans whaling activities within the Caribbean. Which suggested that he was about so sail to windward, against the trades, in December, for 600 miles. Very tough stuff, he sequestered his crew of backpackers from the streets of Panama, none of whom had any sailing experience at all. His remarks to me were; Who cares? As long as they can see, meaning stand watch and report. My thinking was, their going to be too sick to report. They sailed off anyway just two days before I did.
I noticed in the Picture that the newly refurbished Vega now has stainless rigging and Merryman turnbuckles. So no more weaving of galvanized wire.
