Didn't Clinton get reelected with such an accusation?

Well, with Clinton, it was not sexual assault, but consensual sex.

Trump got elected despite being a self-proclaimed sexual predator.

Given the corrupt and demented Democratic candidate, we are obviously living in bizarro world!

Perhaps a nice bizarro video can help making things even?

Bernie Sanders corruption revealed in newly released video!

True, it was consensual.  But many would call it an abuse of power.  A 49-year old president preying upon a 22-year old intern.

Hey Neven, as it's already decided that Drumpf gets a second term, could you consider again the closing of all political threads. There's only one truth and the sooner we Europeans see it the better for us. Them US people have voted to limit their rights so time to do it here too?

Bernie Sanders dropped out of the Democratic race.

That is probably why they are there.

I hung out at US based message boards for ages and i always watched their political threads with anthropological interest. What you think as a European does not really matter since you do not get to vote.

It was more a comment about Europeans with strong feelings about US elections.

Too bad they chose poorly, of course Sanders should be the Democratic nominee for President in 2020. Biden is a bit better than Pence, but he's older and thus about as ineligible. Now the USAns who are sub-50 are going to have to choose between Alzheimer and Dementia. Good luck, if you still remember your launch codes for nukes, do you remember where they're pointed at? Nice to see US isolation will continue.

You'd think presidents don't matter much - until one is elected that matters a lot, in a bad way, amid the worst pandemic in a century.

Let's hope the contenders elect younger viceroyals, sorry, vice-presidents. Sanders could have elected a winning Vice-prez. This has indeed reminded me of the end times of Soviet Union when the 'young Gorbachev' was ousted by people of the same age as these three.

Are you surprised?  That would happen to any sector, once the candidate that wanted to eliminate their business was in turn eliminated from contention.

No, not surprised.

What it tells us, nonetheless, is that in the future, less money will go into health care, more money to the stakeholders. Exactly the opposite of what's actually needed - not only during an ongoing pandemic.

With the possibility of CV-19 decimating the senior ranks of both parties & The Supreme Court this is liable to be the most important election since the Civil War.

It's a Damn Shame that no one of substance will be on the federal ballot in such an important race. :-\

The entire election has taken a significant turn.  The top issue, by far, will be COVID-19.  This includes the current healthcare system, overall economy, and the president's response.  Biden (and the same would be true if it were Sanders) has become a non-issue.  This election will be a referendum on Trump, and how well he has handled this crisis.  The jury is still out.

I don't agree. This crisis would be perfect for Sanders to show how good his ideas are for the American people. So much of this is to his advantage, that it almost seems tailor-made.

But, for some reason or other, Sanders doesn't want to exploit this. Even if he was cheated out of the nomination (due to voting machines and the corrupt pre-Super Tuesday orders from the DNC), he basically gave it away by refusing to speak about Biden's corruption and ineligibility. He simply refuses to fight for it, as if he doesn't really want to become president.

So, while Sanders drops out and then goes on to vote for the biggest swindle in American history, Trump outflanks the Democrats on the left by providing Med4All for Corona and extending student debt.

What a mess, and what a disappointment.

Random thoughts:

1) Technically, it's not over yet. The Dem convention isn't until August. Biden has to survive until at least then. Bernie is still on the ballot and Biden has some major flaws in the form of declining mental health and a very credible sexual assault charge. Bernie's remaining on the ballot makes it a little harder to justify picking a non-Bernie replacement for Biden in the unlikely event that becomes  necessary.

2) I was a Bernie guy 110%, but will acknowledge that he had some flaws as a candidate. Give him credit for moving the Overton Window left, but his policies are still a wish list and we need to address the climate crisis, not just build consensus that it's a problem.

3) The left needs to find a new leader who is more willing to take risk than Bernie. Nature abhors a vacuum and there is a huge market. Someone will fill it, but no one comes to mind right now. I'm thinking a more Gandhi / MLK like figure who has the conviction and willingness to die for the cause. Bernie's supporters make up a lot of the working class jobs and they need to organize general strikes to achieve their goals.

Ro Khanna is someone I could see running for POTUS in 2024 and someone I could easily vote for. That said, he would need to demonstrate more alpha characteristics than he has thus far in order to be the MLK / Gandhi type that I'm envisioning to encourage the working class toward a general strike mentality.

AOC and her squad buddies have shown more alpha characteristic in their willingness to push back on Pelosi and the establishment and AOC is seen as a leader on an issue (Climate) which is a natural galvanizing point for the left.

I'm not necessarily predicting the movement leader will be a politician. MLK and Gandhi were not politicians. Someone like Cornel West has the requisite fire in the belly. It will be an interesting transition to post-Bernie, but there is an appetite and a growing acknowledgment among left media that they need someone who doesn't play as nice with the establishment. For all of his campaign rhetoric, Bernie has lost some credibility by saying "Joe Biden is my friend" too many times. Bernie's supporters don't feel Joe Biden is THEIR friend. Someone who can be tougher on corporate media (as Trump is) would be an asset.

I take a little issue with the term 'alpha characteristic'. Sounds too masculine for me.

But i think i know what you mean, Phoenix. The willingness/ableness to push back and stand up is indeed needed.

Given that the characteristic was specifically associated with AOC, the squad and Gandhi, there is little reason to interpret it as a masculine characteristic.

It has to do with asserting a non-negotiable moral standard that is not subordinate to the ruling paradigm.

Gandhi was the best example IMO. His ability to get followers to join him in putting their lives on the line while practicing non-violent civil disobedience is the model the left would do well to emulate in addressing the climate crisis. Extinction Rebellion and Greta Thunberg do this on a small/medium scale.

Now that I mention her, Greta has the characteristics of an alpha leader. She has the courage of her convictions, was willing to stand on her own, walks the talk and won't be talking about how much she respects Joe Biden. IMO, she has more alpha characteristic than Bernie. The right wingers in the US attack her because they fear her potential.

So, B.Sanders has endorsed J.Biden as the Democratic candidate. Too bad there should then not be any reductions in US medical bills, likely the payments and fees go up, when Republicans and Democrats try to profit from CoV2. Medical profession though is a funny business, the longer you have a customer the better, so Drumpf is actually giving United Statans an economical benefiti by letting them die to it.

And yet, the latest poll by Monomuth shows Biden ahead by 4, CNN by 5, the Economist/YouGov shows him ahead by 6, Quinnipiac by 8, CNN by 11.  Only Economict/YouGov has a recent Trump vs Sanders poll, and it shows the same results, Sanders +6.

Previously, the last major polls that show a comparison between the two Democratic candidates against Trump are IBD/TIPP with Biden +6 and Sanders +1, Grinnel/Selzer with Biden +4 and Sanders -1, Harvard-Harris with Biden +10 and Sanders +6, NBC News/WSJ with Biden +9 and Sanders +4.

Summarizing these five polls shows Biden with an average lead over Trump of 7, and Sanders with a lead of 3.  I would believe these polls over a youtube video.

I wonder if Biden's aware that Sanders has dropped out of the race. ::)

I once believed that the best feature of the Trump Presidency was that Trump was so incompetent that few of his mandates were successful.
With Biden now carrying the colors for the Democrats, I'm unsure how to play the "Trump isn't smart enough" card. :'(

Obama endorses Biden - and has some good words on Bernie.

This is from Biden's quite active YouTube channel. The number of 26.7K subscribers has not significantly risen in the last weeks. That is, Biden is not "hiding" but folks are hiding from Biden.

What is the scope of this thread now that Biden is now the de facto nominee?

There are a lot of interesting issues to be discussed relative to the American political struggle and the tug of war between neoliberal and progressive Democrats and the potential for a third party movement. But at this point, they are no longer related to the race for 2020 nominee which is the title of the thread. Which is the appropriate thread to continue the discussion? Is a new thread appropriate for discussion of US politics ?
