Apropos oldies I actually wanted to revisit Gene Krupa on drums with the Benny Goodman orchestra 1930/40 and its Japanese musico-martial arts apotheosis by the Kyoto Tachibana Girls Highschool Band...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apotheosis

Guess where the well-trained and worn algorithms of the Internets led me to, ultimately. Carnatic classical music drumming. Best search results in Tamil and Telugu it looks. (Yes, I also got into a theory about mothertongue and rhythmic intelligence: The Dravidian languages of southern India are not Indo-German, but more like Finnish or Hungarian or Turkish.. (?...)  )

Here is young Shyam Ravidath in his Arangetram (debut) as temple drummer on the Mridangam drum in a temple in Portland OR, of all places.

The innocent looking clay pot (Ghatam) can rival any Northern Indian tabla virtuoso, incl. Zakir Hussain. Beware. No need for psychedelic drugs here... Prof. Ravi Balasubramanian is standing on the shoulders of giants even greater. Here he lends his shoulders to young Shyam. No wonder these folks are so good at maths. https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=l0w3xh0AAAAJ&hl=en

This is the Thani Avarthanam (percussionists' solo) for (in?) Chakkani Rajamargamu, a Telugu kriti in the Carnatic music tradition.  ::) :o

To get straight Western again,

plus the Tachibana girls (and a few boys). Alas the private close-up of the drummers with gong in a school yard performance seems removed from YouTube. I have never seen girls have so much fun. Butt stopping the gong at the end.

(This is actually a herd of giants standing on the shoulders of a herd of giants. Looks like here we get into trouble with linguistics=

Stephen Stills - Love The One You're With (1970)

"best known for his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young"
According to bandmate Richie Furay, he was "the heart and soul of Buffalo Springfield"
"Stills's first solo album, Stephen Stills, earned a gold record and is the only album to feature both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton"

See it is from 1970. I guess not all the goodies come from the Fifties or Sixties.

Supremacy and insanity are outside of living nature. Insanity, even when you're not aware of it because everything is 'normal', is not something you should want in your brain. Sorry, couldn't resist :).

I like Tee-set. They have more nice songs such as "She Likes Weeds".

Apropos oldies (and quick drumming). I hate Quincy Jones for what he did with Michael Jackson and Miles Davis (*). Except his oldies. Didn't know Lalo Schifrin is such a pianist...

Quoth wikipedia:
Quote
Boris Claudio "Lalo" Schifrin (born June 21, 1932)[1] is an Argentine-American pianist, composer, arranger and conductor. He is best known for his large body of film and TV scores since the 1950s, including the "Theme from Mission: Impossible", Bullitt and Enter the Dragon. He has received five Grammy Awards and six Oscar nominations. Associated with the jazz music genre, Schifrin is also noted for his collaborations with Clint Eastwood from the late 1960s to the 1980s, particularly the Dirty Harry films.

(sorry Tom, I had this ready to post just after you did. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positively_4th_Street)

Heleentje Van Capelle - Naar De Speeltuin (nl) (1951)

Dutch lyrics for wili and others to enjoy below the video. It also gives a picture of older values concerning children. You can put it through Google translate for English.

(2m56)

Af en toe gaan pa en moe met
ons naar de speeltuin toe,

Dat is voor ons kinderen
het fijnste wat bestaat.

't Is een eind bij ons vandaan,
daarom gaat de karavaan

's Morgens al op weg, dan
zijn wij er niet zo laat.

Heeft mama een goede bui
en is papa niet te lui

Nou, dan gaan we naar de speeltuin.

Ma draagt broodjes in een
mand,pa de trommel met verband

En dan gaan we naar de speeltuin.

En we wippen en we draaien
en we schommelen echt fijn

Tot we mis'lijk van het
draaien en de limonade zijn

Heel de dag is het dan feest
tot we'r uitzien als een beest

Nu wij heerlijk in de
speeltuin zijn geweest

Kleine Piet vliegt van de wip,
valt z'n tanden door zijn lip

Hij brult als een wilde
als papa verbinden wil.

Lien draait in de molen rond,
jankend als een jonge hond

Want ze wil er uit en dat
ding dat staat niet stil.

Heeft mama een goede bui
en is papa niet te lui

Nou, dan gaan we naar de speeltuin.

Ma draagt broodjes in een mand,
pa de trommel met verband

En dan gaan we naar de speeltuin.

En we wippen en we draaien
en we schommelen echt fijn

Tot we mis'lijk van het
draaien en de limonade zijn

Heel de dag is het dan feest
tot we'r uitzien als een beest

Nu wij heerlijk in de
speeltuin zijn geweest

Thanks, nan!

Tom, 4th street is an actual street just a few blocks from where I live in Minneapolis. After leaving Hibbing, Dylan (Zimmerman) spent time developing his style in Minneapolis, part of the West Bank scene. There are still folk singers in the area who were major influences on his style.

He ended up feeling quite bitter about how he was treated by various people here, and this is kind of middle finger to 'Minnesota Nice' people who don't really support you when you most need it

Nice ones Tom.

Brexit is upon us. Old lessons unheeded.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belfast_Child
Jim Kerr recalled in 1000 UK Number 1 Hits why he used the melody, "I first heard the melody (of She Moved Through The Fair) a few days after the Enniskillen bombing (when a bomb planted by the IRA exploded during a Remembrance Day service at Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, killing 12 people and injuring at least 63), and like everybody when you see the images I was sick. In the second part of the song, I'm trying to relate to people in Northern Ireland who lost loved ones. I'm trying to talk about the madness, the sadness and the emptiness. I'm not saying I have any pearls of wisdom, but I have a few questions to ask"

Is it TMI to tell you that my daughter's greatest aspiration is to perform the following song on stage with a giant strapon, replacing each instance of 'winner' with 'wiener'?  :o

Nice Tom. I have this song but named "1948".
I can whistle the whole song and do so every couple of days. Gerard Cox covered the song with the same melody; (1948) "Toen was geluk, heel gewoon".

Thanks, nan. I like some covers of that by female trios:

"A force de chercher de bonnes raisons, on en trouve; on les dit; et après on y tient, non pas tant parce qu'elles sont bonnes que pour ne pas se démentir." Choderlos de Laclos "You struggle to come up with some valid reasons, then cling to them, not because they're good, but just to not back down."

Thank you wili, I really enjoyed that.

The first is a band to my heart. Nice, open, critical, funny etc.
Must've been nice to have been at that performance. The audience sounds engaged and educated :). And a small venue. I don't like large ones.

Another soul soothing song I like:

Van Morrison - Coney Island (1989)
(2m02)

And Tom, I like this one from The Guess Who

The Guess Who - These Eyes (1969)
(3m46)
"It is preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly" - Bertrand Russell
"It is preoccupation with what other people from your groups think of you, that prevents you from living freely and nobly" - Nanning
Why do you keep accumulating stuff?

That was awesome, kass!

Is it TMI to tell you that my daughter's greatest aspiration is to perform the following song on stage with a giant strapon, replacing each instance of 'winner' with 'wiener'?  :o

Ah yes... will we have any stages left?

She should practice the act so she can perform it in fundraising shows on all the little podiums for those podiums (Ekko, ACU) when we can fill the venues again.

If they lack acts i will chime in with my ´once there is a 100 bucks in the hat it will stop routine´ although for that to work nowadays the hat probably needs some means of electronic payment. Bah.
