It happened in previous years Pmt, seems to be happening again. A record-breaking sales success while increasing the prices must be a true dream for some.

My beloved Canada has arrested the daughter of one of China's most powerful oligarchs, and the Premier is far from amused.

I seems as though bad things happen when Trump and Xi have dinner, last time it was missiles into Syria. This time the Canadians arrest the CFO of Huawei, and the daughter of it's founder, with the intent of handing her over to the Americans.
The normally very self contained Xi is enraged and has fired off demands to both Canada and the States.
The Loonie has fallen by ~2 cents and I think things will get worse in short order.

Why cant Trudeau stand up to Trump?

Damn is right.  Apparently this is over Huawei violating Trump's sanctions on Iran.  These sanctions really are stupid and counter-productive.

It really would have been better for everyone if Canada had "accidentally" neglected to arrest her.
Why can bureaucracies be inefficient when we need them to be?

Having arrested her though, I can't see that the Canadian government has any realistic option.
Trump is already very quick to punish Canada (for no rational reason whatsoever), and if Trudeau thumbed his nose at Trump by just releasing her, consequences could be seriously painful for quite a number of people, mostly in Canada.  He'll need to honor the extradition request.

Stocks and bonds are down another 2% today (as of now), and this arrest is cited as a major reason.

Just think, if that 2% of invested wealth were invested in renewable energy projects, we could probably close all US coal-fired plants within a year.  And even make a return on investment for those dollars.  Sigh.

I've heard these same hopeful messages expressed by Hansen and Mann, but what do that mean when they say that there is hope, that we can make a difference, that our governments, communities and families will come through this unscathed? 7:30 -

Their messages are clear, understandable and understood, until after painting a horrific picture of the horrors that are sure to come, they pirouette a few paragraphs from the end of their presentation and attempt to undercut everything they'd just finished speaking about by telling their audience not to worry.

I had a dear friend who was also my primary doctor. He couldn't bear to tell me that that I had cancer, and later that I had little chance of survival. That his withheld prognosis proved inaccurate didn't relieve him from his duty to level with me.

He moved to Louisiana and I to Canada, which was fortunate as we were uncomfortable in each others presence after the specialists leveled with me.

Perhaps Hansen and Mann have no professional obligation to be brutally honest. Perhaps people honestly can't be expected to behave responsibly when presented with a very bleak view of the future. Personally a dark truth is preferable to brilliant lie.

One of the few benefits of increasing age is having read stuff written in the 20th Century.

Once upon a time I had a precious book, "The Sea Around Us" written in the late 1940's by Rachel Carson (yes - the author of "Silent Spring") and published in 1951. It was 86 weeks in the best seller list of the New York Times. I foolishly lent it to a "friend".

A stray memory took me to the library, and to my amazement they were able to find me a copy to borrow, and my memory was right. There is a chapter on Arctic Sea Ice and the changing to a warmer climate since about 1900. The basics are all there, retreating sea ice, melting Norwegian glaciers, fish and birds moving north, longer growing seasons and new sea routes open. The basic science is there concerning a layer of cold freshwater overlying warmer, saltier water. Which brings me to submarine waves and Otto Petersson, who published in 1912 a paper "Climatic variations in historic and prehistoric time".

His contention was that the strength of submarine waves depends on the gravitational force exerted by the sun, moon and planets which in turn depend on orbital variations, and that these submarine waves have a far greater amplitude than surface tides. He calculated the most recent major period of maximum tidal action as in AD 1433, the most recent minimum at AD 450 , and the next minimum at AD 2400.. He also calculated minor cycles every 9, 18 and 36 years.

This variation in tidal action was sufficient to force the major changes in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and from that the European climate.

Is it not possible that this science is still valid as a force that can enhance or reduce the effects of AGW? That mixing between that cold freshwater surface layer and deeper warmer, saltier water can be increased during periods of higher tidal action and reduced during periods of lower tidal action? And that in turn depends on variations in the orbits of the planets that are easily calculated using the mathematics of Newton?

Here is the link to Petersson's paper. Fascinating stuff, and think on the years it took to get all the data together.

12/01/2018 was a dark day for Chinese technology giant Huawei.

The founder's daughter, Meng Wanzhou was arrested and now faces 30 years in an American prison. At 47, and considering that Federal prisoners serve every day of their sentence, this amounts to a life sentence with no possibility of early release or parole. Health care in American prisons makes it very unlikely that she would survive.

Her prospective dinner companion and family friend Dr. Zhang Shoucheng, whom she was flying to Argentina to meet with when arrested, apparently flung himself from a rooftop in the United States. The 55 year old might have become depressed after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States recently named him and his companies as targets of ongoing investigations.
Dr. Zhang was thought to be in line for the Nobel Prize in Physics, and one of his firms was providing start up funding in Silicon Valley even as it provided incentives for Chinese recipients to return to China with their budding firms.

Huawei's lead in the development of G5 mobile networks and the 7 nanometer process was dealt a blow when sub-contractor ASML's factory in Holland announced that a fire on the night of 12/01 would delay shipment of it's products.

A death, a fire, an incarceration in three different countries. What a day for Huawei.

Holding Mrs. Wanzhou for extradition to the US of A is a terrible position for Canada to find herself in. The Trumpster's Tweet indicating that the whole purpose of her arrest may be her usefulness as a hostage during trade negotiations makes Canadians appear either guilty of collusion in a criminal enterprise, or incredibly naive WRT foreign affairs.
If the timing of Dr. Zhang's death doesn't raise the hair on the back of your neck, you simply haven't been following American History - at least from the era of MK-Ultra through to the present.

The question I keep asking myself is how in the hell Canada can escape the wrath of at least one of her major trading partners.

Trudeau never should have replaced Dion, an accomplished diplomat, with Freeland, an embittered Neo-Nazi, but that time has passed. Following "The rule of Law" isn't appropriate if the charges weren't based in "law", but were based on Meng's value as an international hostage.

If we allow her to be passed into the tender grasp of the universally respected American Justice System, the Chinese will never forgive us. The stories of her martyrdom will be taught in Mandarin grade schools and reenacted in village squares for a millennium.
Our LNG, timber, ginseng and wheat will rot on our docks, forlornly awaiting Chinese ships that will never come. We'll cloth ourselves in American hand me downs and communicate by landline as Vancouver's housing market increasingly resembles Detroit's.

Can we allow her to "accidentally" slip through our fingers? Can we afford to tell the Americans that we won't be made a partner in their schemes? Can we tell the Chinese that though we've bent the rules for American hostages, we'll never do so for an oriental?

R.I.P. Dr Zhang

There is a lot of stuff about how AGW is attacked on social media, including personal attacks on indviduals, e.g. Prof Mann.

There is nothing new under the sun. The attacks on Rachel Carson after "Silent Spring" came out were a wonder to behold, and many were mysoginist in character.. Mind you this sentence from the book probably raised a few hackles -
Quote
“For the first time in the history of the world, every human being is now subjected to contact with dangerous chemicals from the moment of conception until death.”

A timely  reminder that AGW is not the only beast on the block

Herewith a link to an interesting website new to me.

Quote
The personal attacks on Rachel Carson as a woman scientist
Quote
Miss Rachel Carson’s reference to the selfishness of insecticide manufacturers probably reflects her Communist sympathies, like a lot of our writers these days. We can live without birds and animals, but, as the current market slump shows, we cannot live without business. As for insects, isn't it just like a woman to be scared to death of a few little bugs! As long as we have the H-bomb everything will be O.K.

—Letter to the editor of the New Yorker [cited in Smith 2001, 741]

Opponents of Silent Spring attacked Rachel Carson personally. They accused her of being radical, disloyal, unscientific, and hysterical. In 1962, at the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, criticism of the United States struck many as unpatriotic or sympathetic with communism. Former Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson wrote privately to former President Dwight Eisenhower that Carson was “probably a communist” (Lear 1997, 429). Velsicol’s threatening letter to Houghton Mifflin argued that if the public demanded elimination of pesticides, “our supply of food will be reduced to East-curtain parity [i.e., as inefficient as the Communist nations east of the ‘Iron Curtain’]” (Smith 2001, 736).

Snowflakes are nice and remind me of ourselves, momentary masters of a dot.
Crossposting this without anything better to do, on this first day of the new year:

Mornin' & Happy New Earth Cycle! No use for my Eddi (or batteries), this time of year.

Not interested in the dark side of this earth cycle at all, my 5360Wp PV's has produced 0.06kWh so far today and that's pretty much it, it's getting dark(er). A little snow on them for once...

Adding the graph from yesterday. Brighter days are coming.

Helium Is In Short Supply, Hitting Balloons and Scientific Research
https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/04/12/helium-shortage-is-hitting-balloons-and-scientific-research.html

There's a major helium shortage affecting a host of industries — and it's not clear how anyone is going to solve it.

... Overall U.S. production has fallen as the Bureau of Land Management has been rationing supply since February 2018 after a group of countries lead by Saudi Arabia announced an economic embargo of Qatar. That created chaos in the helium supply chain for weeks as roughly 30 percent of the global supply was taken off the market.

While that has been resolved, new supplies that are supposed to come online have been delayed and unplanned plant outages have further impacted the market

But demand from high-tech manufacturing, including demand from China, is also rising.

In a market dominated by just a few sources, any disruption in the supply chain will have a magnified impact.

"The problem is, helium is being used up faster than it can be produced these days,"

Balloons are plastic filth and should not be used at all.

Where to put satellite news (i.e. the satellites of importance to ASIF)?
Do we need a thread in (say) science?

GRACE-FO Satellite.

I read that GRACE-FO is producing science data but could not find it. So I sent an e-mail to Germany and the US. Germany has responded.

It seems that some data for experts only is already available. (Level 1). Stuff for pure amateurs like me (Level 3) - e.g. Greenland and Antarctic Ice mass change in a format I can understand - will be available soon.

Links I found and copy of e-mail bel :-\ow

GRACE-Follow-On Data
I advice to visit our GRACE and GRACE-FO archives at GFZ, the Information System and Data Center (ISDC) at https://isdc.gfz-potsdam.de/grace-isdc/ and https://isdc.gfz-potsdam.de/grace-fo-isdc/.

At GRACE (but also GRACE-FO) you can read there: To get access via FTP to the different GRACE Level-1B (instrument and orbit data as well as atmosphere and ocean de-aliasing (AOD) model), Level-2 (gravity models in terms of spherical harmonic coefficients) and Level-3 (user-friendly gridded) data and documentation, (monthly) newsletters and various project related documentation please follow the link "GRACE Gravity Data and Documentation" on the left hand side. The link “News related to GRACE Gravity Data” provides further useful information on recent Level-1B and Level-2 data distribution. The Level-3 data provided at ISDC are based on the most recent GRACE data release from GFZ and are visualized and described at GFZ´s Gravity Information Service (GravIS).

The Level-2 (and later L3) GRACE-FO products will be available in about 10-14 days. So far only L1 have been made available a week ago. I also ask you to get familiar with the GravIS portal where you should find "ready to use" data also for Greenland and Antarctica.

Best regards

Sure! This is indeed of interest and should have it's own place IMHO.

Yes, Science sounds like the best category for that, and the thread should remain visible there, even if there are no regular comments.

Will do, tomorrow, with one or 2 pointers at what satellites I keep an eye on.

Compulsive Behavior

Darkness in modern perspective is an absence of visible light, similarly let's see compulsiveness as an absence of consciousness.

Now i wonder, what should Compulsive Posting mean?

(1, 2) .

The Gadget
   (Have you read User Manual?)

Sensorium, blog by Maureen Seaberg at https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/sensorium
Posts 1-5 of a series "Experiments Suggest Humans Can Directly Observe the Quantum": 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Quote
Part Five

By William C. Bushell and Maureen Seaberg

This periodic series has been addressing a potentially revolutionary and historic movement in physics and cosmology–and not only a potentially revolutionary and historic movement in these particular subjects–but also in the general, wider range of the history and ultimate nature of humanity overall: what it means to be human, on the most fundamental of levels.

The movement as of yet has no unification, no internal cohesion, no formal name or profile, no leaders or spokespersons, and, in its essential form, it is just now emerging–without a formal public definition or announcement–within the last few months dramatically, and within the last few years less dramatically and less clearly (and one could even say that it has been percolating for much longer, but in a domain even more obscure in terms of global awareness).

...

Only as of recently, and many findings just emerging from rigorous scientific research by leading researchers at leading scientific institutions within the last few weeks and months, we can now say that human beings have the proven potential to:

    * see light on the level of the single photon, essentially the most irreducible unit of light that exists
    * hear at the level of vibrations with amplitudes on the atomic scale, and discriminate auditory time intervals within the range of millionths of a second
    * experience acute tactile discrimination on the nanoscale – ie, billionths of a meter – even down to the level of being able to discriminate matter on the level of individual molecules
    * detect, through quantum mechanically-based mechanisms of olfactory sensitivity, over a trillion different smells, through the human olfactory system, only recently recognized as a part of a larger, sophisticated, organism-wide chemoreception system

And equally striking, even startling, is the fact that within the last year, leading physicists from top institutions around the world,  including at least one Nobel Prize-winning physicist, have called for a new revolutionary protocol to be pursued in physics, the actual recruitment of human subjects to use their own newly discovered sensory-perceptual capacities in order to attempt to directly perceive key, quantum phenomena which have proven elusive to modern technologies and methodologies!

...

A load of References in that Series, example:

"Experiments Suggest Humans Can Directly Observe the Quantum":

Please, I say please ... leave these last few un-collapsed uncertainties un-collapsed. By collapsing this last probabilistic frontier into a mundane certainty, you are likely to take away the one and only weapon we have against the elites, who have already captured every other power anyone has to resist them and remove them from power. Don't screw this up for us!

Signed, Tim, the probability bell curve adjuster.

No, ivica, I was just sort of kidding around. Sort of.

I definitely suggest people do start reading their user manual.

You're ok to go.

Mmm. It is well understood that dark adapted human eye can see one or two photons. It is well understood that eardrum can detect vibration amplitude of atomic diameter or less. It is well understood that olfactory sensors can detect a single molecule.

As for tactile sense, I dealt with a tool and die company that employed a blind woman to check surface finish, she could easily tell tenths of micrometer imperfection. But for nanometer and below they still had to use optical interferometry.

But in human sensing, the quantum level phase information is lost. So quantum interference is not detectable by human nervous system.

The article by Bushell and Seaberg reveals a profound misunderstanding of quantum level measurement.

If you wanna go there, i suggest reading Penrose on quantum effects in human brain. He has interesting things to say about microtubules and such; unfortunately no one believes him and he cant offer experimental confirmation ... so sad.

I do not want to draw too much from current state of any theory, i'm not much on Penrose side.

I follow with (a layman) interest some recent discussion/threads at SciPhysicsForums < Physics ‹ Sci.Physics.Foundations, example:
Quantum Mechanics with a Hidden Variable!
Quantum-mechanical description of reality is complete!
