Shitty Narrative

   journals: most are shitty
   editors: many are shitty
   journalists: some fine humans there

We should pay more attention to journalists (and their articles) then to a shitty platform they (unfortunately have to) use.

Why are poor grown-ups in Africa and Asia full of colour (especially women) and are the rich people in Europe and N-America so colourless? Clothes, house interiors, cars are in general all colourless. I think it is a symptom of a damaged psyche.

Not per se.

A photographer friend of mine went to South Africa to shoot a series of photographs and basically Africa itself is really colourful. You have red earth with very green plants and flowers in all colours with blue and white above. The place is just more colourful then Europe.

Then again we had more colourful fashions for the rich when they were kings etc.

Off course the suit is a bit of a uniform. The car colours becoming blander over time is also a general trend. Probably somebody looked into it. When i was young we had red and green as normal colours.

Basically in our culture ´business´ is king. So they all wear business suits. Then again they have colourful toys at home.

OTOH the whole market supremacy is a mental illness but it´s not like people were more sane during the medieval feather craze.
Þetta minnismerki er til vitnis um að við vitum hvað er að gerast og hvað þarf að gera. Aðeins þú veist hvort við gerðum eitthvað.

Venezuelan Patrol Ship Sunk Itself After Ramming Polar Cruise Liner With Reinforced Hull
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/32853/this-venezuelan-patrol-ship-sunk-itself-after-ramming-a-cruise-liner-with-an-reinforced-hull

In what sounds like it could be an April Fools joke, a Venezuelan Navy offshore patrol vessel recently sank after ramming a cruise liner in the Caribbean Sea. The cruise ship, which had no passengers on board at the time and has a reinforced hull to sail through ice-filled waters, suffered only minimal damage in what the operating company, Columbia Cruise Services, has called an "act of aggression ... in international waters."

The incident occurred in the early hours of Mar. 30, 2020, but Columbia Cruise Services only released an official statement on Apr. 1. The company, which is headquartered in Germany, said the RCGS Resolute was drifting just over 13 miles off the coast of Isla La Tortuga, a Venezuelan island situated some 60 miles off the country's northern coast, when ANBV Naiguatá, also known by its hull number GC-23, approached it. The Venezuelan Navy ship ordered the cruise ship to follow it to Puerto Moreno on Isla De Margarita, located to the east, accusing it of violating the country's territorial waters.

The 403-foot-long Resolute, which is flagged in Portugal, reportedly had a gross tonnage of around 8,445 tons at the time. The  RCGS Resolute is a purpose built polar expedition vessel of the highest ice class, rated 1A Super, designed to operate in difficult ice conditions.

The Naiguatá, which is just over 262 feet long, is a Guaicamacuto class offshore patrol vessel and displaces around 1,720 tons with a full load.

"While the Master was in contact with the head office [in Germany], gun shots were fired and, shortly thereafter, the navy vessel approached the starboard side at speed with an angle of 135° and purposely collided with the RCGS Resolute," the statement continued. "The navy vessel continued to ram the starboard bow in an apparent attempt to turn the ship’s head towards Venezuelan territorial waters."

Whatever the case, the steel-hulled patrol ship suffered severe damage from repeatedly ramming the cruise ship, began to take on water, and ultimately sank. Columbia Cruise Services says Resolute remained in the area until it was clear its services were not required to help in the rescue of the 44 crew members. It then continued on, as planned, to the Port of Willemstad in Curaçao.

This is a great read and, more importantly, sheds a light on the nature of humans before they become grownups.

My understanding from research and decades of personal observations (I was in teenage friends groups as a non-grownup from 1986-2011) is that the transition from child/youth to grownup is not natural but a grownup-cultural-adaptation. After this transition almost all have cut the link to who they were as a child/youth. They have forcefully identified with grownup culture in order to belong, to be seen as a grownup, to adhere to what's expected of them. Grownup morals and group culture is much different from child/youth morals and group culture, although the transition seems to be starting ever earlier because of school results, tests, social media, commerce and fear.

I found it wonderful to find yet another piece of evidence for my understanding/theories/research/worldview. Just like the beautiful documentary youtube-film about the San people from Southern Africa did.

The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/may/09/the-real-lord-of-the-flies-what-happened-when-six-boys-were-shipwrecked-for-15-months
  by Rutger Bregman

  Final two alinea's:
It’s time we told a different kind of story. The real Lord of the Flies is a tale of friendship and loyalty; one that illustrates how much stronger we are if we can lean on each other. After my wife took Peter’s picture, he turned to a cabinet and rummaged around for a bit, then drew out a heavy stack of papers that he laid in my hands. His memoirs, he explained, written for his children and grandchildren. I looked down at the first page. “Life has taught me a great deal,” it began, “including the lesson that you should always look for what is good and positive in people.”

• This is an adapted excerpt from Rutger Bregman’s Humankind, translated by Elizabeth Manton and Erica Moore. A live streamed Q&A with Bregman and Owen Jones takes place at 7pm on 19 May 2020.

Dissident Circles Too Often Become Another Nerdy Hobby Group
Quote
...
It’s important to hold an acute awareness of why you got into this stuff in the first place. Whatever your individual ideological position, you got into this because you want to actually change things; to change the world, to cause a movement away from humanity’s unhealthy patterns and toward health. It’s not about petty vendettas against opposing factions or subfactions or individuals who don’t see things exactly the same way you do. And your energy expenditure should reflect this.
...
This thing is about changing the world, and changing you. That’s it. If you’re not actually, concretely doing one of those two things in any given moment while engaging in dissident circles, you’re just participating in another nerdy hobby group, with about as much consequence.

ISF2020: Vandana Shiva & David Suzuki: The Virus is a Wake-up Call
"
Legendary environmental warriors Vandana Shiva and David Suzuki, come together in this rare conversation across continents. Both are past winners of the ‘Right Livelihood Prize’ often referred to as the ‘alternative Nobel’, and have had enormous local and global impact through their work.

Now, in the middle of a global pandemic, they invite us to consider the opportunity we have to change our ways of being as a species, and how we must truly be “all in this together”.

About consistency of arithmetic symbols.
(I write % here as o/o)

o/o  = percent = per 100
o/oo = permille = per 1,000
o/ooo = permyriad = per 10,000  (perhaps drop this one)

I suggest an expansion of these symbols and a change to the permille symbol:

o/k = per 1,000
o/m = per 1,000,000 (ppm)
o/b = per 1,000,000,000 (ppb)
o/t = per 1,000,000,000,000 (ppt)

Or

A lesser alternative imo:
o/o3 = per 1,000
o/o6 = per 1,000,000
etc.

What do you think?

Oneness vs. The 1%

#VandanaShiva at the United Nations Office at Geneva, Mar 14, 2019

"World-renowned eco-feminist and "rock star of the environmental movement", Vandana Shiva, presents her latest book "Oneness vs. The 1%", equal parts a sobering warning on the dangers to human rights and biodiversity of the elite-led extractive economy of our time, and a profound reflection on why this is a unique moment to collectively correct the false construction of capital as the sole force of wealth (and well-being). Her presentation opened the second day of UNRISD conference, "Overcoming Inequalities in a Fractured World: Between Elite Power and Social Mobilization"."

The problem I have with really becoming a true Buddhist (which I will end up doing one day) is that I would have to stop thinking about all the shit that's happening to this world right now...

I would have to stop kickin' ass...

Who am I to set an example by ignoring all that shit in the world? Who would care? Who would notice and listen to me?

Noone...

So I just keep kickin' ass until the day when my dream has finally been realized; A mental healthcare system inspired by Buddhism...

Let's not try to diagnose and fix erroneous thinking, but let's teach people how to stop thinking. Teach them to live in the here and now. On that quantum layer in between the future and the past. The now...

I was there one day after the eighth day of a ten day meditation retreat... I've never felt more love and peace in my heart... It's an indescribable moment... And I want it back!!!!

80% of our mental health institutions in Belgium are in the hands of Catholic organisations...
When I tell the doctor that I can hear God speak to me, I will be diagnosed as mentally ill... A psychoses... And then I didn't even tell them that I can walk on water!@!!!  ;D ;D ;D

This world is completely fucked up! 90% of people in the world believe in a psychoses, while telling those who don't believe in their delusion, that they're unworthy...

People are a virus for this planet, and nature is trying to get rid of us.
I just hope that God isn't too late with his cleansing...
Or was it nature?
Is lightning God or Nature?
What we can't explain, is God, right?
But it's nature...
And when God created people, he fucked up!
We killed all of His "creations"

And now He's trying to get rid of us stupid morons that preach creation but have no idea what the frack that actually means...

NATURE CREATED US YOU STUPID RELIGIOUS MORONS!!!!!

GO MULTIVERSE!
(Yes I'm drunk and stoned again.... Hope I made you think though!)
« Last Edit: August 19, 2020, 09:30:55 PM by Freegrass »
90% of the world is religious, but somehow "love thy neighbour" became "fuck thy neighbours", if they don't agree with your point of view.

WTF happened?

"The way you think is the way you feel
and the way you feel is the way you think."

Qst: "Sonakshi Sinha: Dearest Sadhguruji, I have a question for you.
I’m a very emotional person, and I often find it very difficult to emotionally detach myself from a situation that I know that is not good for me. Like I can see that this is not going somewhere where I want it to go, but it’s very difficult to divert my mind and my emotions away from that. How do you think I can handle that situation? I would really like to know your perspective on it."

Ans: Don’t try to resist compulsive Thoughts and Emotions, Just Observe !

04:36 "Questioner: Sadhguru , you have said, "We should know this piece of life to its fullest."
How to know this piece of life to its fullest way? And I feel that I'm full of fear, anger, jealous - all those things. How to go beyond all these things and to know this life to its fullest?
Sadhguru: You don’t have to go beyond all these things; you just have to stop creating those things."

The problem I have with really becoming a true Buddhist (which I will end up doing one day) is that I would have to stop thinking about all the shit that's happening to this world right now...

Yeah all that shit happening is not really helping.

The journey is more interesting then the destination. Do try some simple za zen. Just sitting around and thinking about nothing.

It is a good practice. Also thinking about nothing is really hard. You have the obvious outside influence. Technically you can shut out the more abstract worries. Then some sound will ruin that but you just start again.

Then there are things that are harder to shut out. The things that are really bugging you and that need to change. The nothing you try to think about helps you realize there is a big thing you are usually ignoring. If you want to move on to nothing that needs to be addressed.

Just start the journey.  :)

I can't right now! Trump is the most historical person in my lifetime, and I really do hope he loses this election, because I'm sick and tired of watching his BS and the historical collapse of an empire...

But it's fun, right?

He used to be a horrible fascist cartoon figure. Now he's just a hilarious deadly joke...

Trouble being a true Buddist .. is they seem to disapprove of budists .  FG .. you were describing your 8th day .. a good bud and singing my heart out does it for me . Then I sleep with a big smile on my face no matter what .

After the meditation retreat, I stayed in the temple for a few more days... And one day I was meditating on the mountain while hundreds of mosquitos were eating me...

I simply ignored them... Accepting pain, and you'll be able to ignore it...

It was my second best experience of meditation, and in the end, I didn't have one red spot on my body...

I know the power of meditation. It's insanely powerful. Just ask Luong Pordaeng... The mummified monk...

What he did is impossible. When you die in the tropics, you rot... Yet he's still sitting there after he died almost 50 years ago...

No buds... Not even cigarettes! Just a wooden bed with a wooden pillow, no talking for ten days, and two vegetarian meals a day...

Beware, Florifulgurator is getting loose and googling Buddhist mummies. Once he had a huge virtual collection... There is e.g. the Japanese art of self-mummification (Sokushinbutsu), there is a Russo-Mongolian master in a salt box, or there is my favorite, Sangha Tenzin from the Indian-Tibetan border, sitting since 500 years, whom I sometimes like to visualize at the beginning of rare sittings.

The article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu stupidly has a photo of Luang Pho Daeng, but no Japanese mummies. They don't look that fresh and cool, but often have gold foil on them. Sokushinbutsu is a prolonged elaborate technique which Luang Pho Daeng likely hasn't practised. But he has prepared himself:

Quote
His skill at meditation was such that he could reportedly meditate for upwards of 15 days at a time, during which period he’d neither move nor consume food or drink. Although the man himself claimed that he needed no nourishment during his marathon meditation sessions, he was frequently warned by physicians that he was causing severe harm to his body through his regular extended bouts of no fluid or food intake.

As you might imagine, during these sessions, he lost a great deal of weight through muscle, fat, and fluid loss and was often so weakened by his meditation that he needed to nursed back to health via fluid resuscitation and the like, before ultimately he would once again resume meditating.

Thanks, nanning, that looks like fun. It makes sense in a land crisscrossed by small and large canals and irrigation ditches that this sport would develop there.

Combination of running, jumping, climbing and pole vaulting, all in one!

Have you seen it (or done it!) first hand?

:) I remember having this sort of talk with Tor a year ago.

Yes wili I have done it once. And it is indeed fun and very atlethic.
But this is a sport that has its origines in "polsspringen" (Frisian "ljeppen"). That's done with a 3-4.5m long wooden pole to cross the ditches and small canals you mentioned. I have my own 'polsstok' (the wooden pole). As in many things, not everybody is good at it :) I dare to say that I am much better than all the people you see in the video's below.

Also please enjoy the beautful bird songs.

International Day of Yoga, 2020

Made no post for 21st june, IDY day, so here it goes:

Yoga Beyond Asanas by Sri M

Quote
The question is, 'Is yoga just doing asanas or pranayam or are there deeper aspects of Yoga? Yoga is defined in Pathanjali's Yoga sutras, as 'Yogas chitta vritti nirodha' which means yoga is the elimination of the distractions, the disturbances and the conflicts of the mind. The angas in the sadhana pada are meant to bring this about because it is not easy to simply sit and say, "I want to be free of the distractions of the mind". It doesn't work like that....
"This online session took place on 21st June, 2020 in Madanapalle."
