However, we are told that Tesla would aim to only have a general assembly line ready on that timeline and it would keep building the factory around the first phase in order to increase production capacity of different parts next year.

This is the same way SpaceX’s Starship factory in Boca Chica, Texas is going up: building the factory around the rocket;  adding new production equipment and “buildings” (‘tents’ and high-bay assembly wind-breaks) even as new iterations of the rocket are designed and manufacturing methods are revised.  They are already at a pace of about one rocket per month, with a goal of one (or possibly two) per week by the end of the year.

I read that in the news and thought that good founds with fixings for the steel framework could be covered by a flexible building in the first instance.  This would allow manufacturing and Tesla has the experience with that.

I noticed that the work on the Giga Shanghai phase 2 was a lot denser than phase 1.  Lessons learned that multiple teams could work on the same general area at the same time.

There is no reason why this cannot also be done in the US, it is more a matter of how much you want to pay once concrete is in place and set.  When there is no construction lag due to material setting delay, it becomes a matter of organisation and management.

For instance, what we see in Giga Shanghai is multiple levels getting flooring at the same time as roofing activities.  This keeps the cranes running constantly and maximises delivery every day.

It will be interesting to watch.

About as interesting as the intention to manufacture Model Y in Texas.  That is a change as far as I can remember.

If they can get it actually operational, even in part, expect another one or 2 new Gigafactories to follow hard on the heels.
Being right too soon is socially unacceptable.

Tesla has picked Austin and Tulsa as finalists for new U.S. factory

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla has picked Austin, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, as finalists for its new U.S. assembly plant, a person briefed on the matter said Friday.

The person says company officials visited Tulsa in the past week and were shown two sites.

It wasn’t clear if there were any other finalists in the mix. The person, who didn’t want to be identified because the site selection process is secret, said no final decision has been made.

The new factory will be Tesla’s biggest so far. The electric car maker has said it wants the factory to be in the center of the country and closer to East Coast markets.

The stakes are high for state and local governments, which covet auto factories because they have a lot of workers and normally pay well, generating income and property taxes. ...

Tesla’s next factory is going to be in Austin, Texas and it’s going to happen quickly

A source familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla has chosen Austin, Texas for its next factory and it’s going to happen quickly.

The race to secure Tesla’s next factory is apparently over.

According to a reliable source familiar with the matter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set on bringing the next Tesla Gigafactory, or now Terafactory, to Austin, Texas, or at least close to the city.

The people familiar with the project said that Musk has tasked the engineering team working at Gigafactory Nevada to start the process for the new factory, which is expected to make the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup truck and the Model Y.

Tesla’s CEO also reportedly wants to move extremely fast.

We are told that the decision for the site is not set in stone since Tesla was apparently given a few options in the greater Austin area, but Musk is said to want to start construction extremely soon and aims to have Model Y vehicles coming out of the plant by the end of the year.

It would be an even more aggressive timeline than Gigafactory Shanghai.

However, we are told that Tesla would aim to only have a general assembly line ready on that timeline and it would keep building the factory around the first phase in order to increase production capacity of different parts next year.

By late next year, the new Texas factory would be producing Tesla’s new Cybertruck electric pickup.

RUMOR has it that the factory is going up at this industrial site near Hutto, Texas — which is already being prepared!  It has rail access with multiple rail companies (we know Tesla has issues with ones that delayed Fremont shipments), and Georgetown is known for going all-in with clean energy.

Proposed Texas site for Tesla factory falls short
      Austin American-Statesman Sep 16, 2014
Quote
AUSTIN, Texas — Officials with Tesla Motors visited Williamson County at least eight times over six months as they sought a site for the company’s $5 billion battery factory, going as far as hiring an Austin lawyer to negotiate in a series of meetings with local and state officials.

The electric car company’s intense interest in 1,200-plus acres between Hutto and Taylor galvanized the two communities and Williamson County to create a rare mega-site for manufacturing served by a rail line.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the Hutto-Taylor site fell just short this month when Tesla chose Reno, Nevada, for its groundbreaking, $5 billion battery factory and the 6,500 jobs expected to come along with it. ...

Tesla is set to produce 4,000 electric cars per week in Shanghai next month, Model Y in Q1 2021
Quote
Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory is also one of the earliest automobile manufacturing plants in China to resume production. Tao Lin said that the factory is currently producing smoothly, and it is expected that the target of 4,000 vehicles per week will be achieved in June this year, which means that the actual output will exceed the design capacity of the first-stage super factory with an annual output of 150,000 units.
4,000 units per week would result in Tesla producing roughly 200,000 electric cars per year at the plant.

The Tesla executive also shed some light on the planned timeline to bring the Model Y to China.
Tao Lin says that Model Y electric SUVs will roll off the line at Gigafactory Shanghai in Q1 2021:
Tao Lin said that the second phase of the Super Factory is also progressing very smoothly. It is expected that the construction will be completed by the end of this year and mass production of Model Y models is expected in the first quarter of next year. This is only more than a year after Tesla founder Musk announced the launch of the Model Y manufacturing project in Shanghai on January 7 this year, refreshing ‘Tesla Speed’ again.

As we recently reported, Tesla is currently building giant buildings next to its existing factory in order to make room for the Model Y production lines.
The new buildings are likely going to double the current size of Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai.

Tesla has taken a new vehicle introduction strategy for Model Y. Unlike previous vehicle programs, which were launched in different markets with vehicles imported from Tesla’s Fremont factory in California, Tesla is only introducing Model Y in new markets once the vehicle is being produced there.
For Europe, it means potential buyers are going to have to wait until Gigafactory Berlin is up and running, which right now is planned for the summer of 2021.

Tesla Will Allow Factory Workers to Take Unpaid Leave Through May 31
The policy follows the reopening of the company's Fremont factory.
Quote
After receiving clearance last week to reopen its factory in Fremont, California, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) will allow workers who have concerns about the coronavirus to take unpaid leave through the end of the month, according to an internal memo initially reported on by Bloomberg News.

According to the memo, which came from Tesla's North American HR chief, Valerie Capers Workman, the company's attendance policy will be reinstated at its Fremont factory starting this Friday. However, the company recognizes that some employees may still have concerns about potentially contracting the virus and spreading it to at-risk members of their households. Tesla is reportedly allowing such employees to take unpaid leave through May 31 if they submit a signed form documenting their concerns.

Separate from quarantine
This newly outlined policy is separate from Tesla's existing policies concerning employees who themselves are at risk or under quarantine. If an employee has been directed to self-quarantine by a doctor or by the company, tests positive for the virus, or is exhibiting symptoms of the illness, the attendance policy does not apply, the memo reportedly said.

Tesla restarted production at its Fremont plant on May 11, in defiance of Alameda County orders. CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he was risking arrest by doing so. On May 9, the company had filed suit against the county in federal court, claiming its 14th Amendment rights were being violated by the shutdown order. By the evening of May 12, county officials announced they had reached a deal with Tesla to allow it to open the following week.

On Wednesday, the company dropped its lawsuit against the county.

Teardown guru Sandy Munro sells Tesla reports mostly to Asian automakers
Quote
Munro has torn down electric powertrain systems from Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Jaguar, and Nissan. He said that most Tesla competitors are only making half-hearted efforts.

They aren’t serious about what they want to do. … They’re saying, we’ll just get something into the marketplace, and they put it into the marketplace, and it’s not really an electric car. It’s kind of like somebody’s impression of how electric cars should be. And it’s using kludgey materials. It’s not a car that’s been designed to be an electric car.

Munro explained that Asian automakers are primarily the ones buying his reports based on teardowns of Tesla vehicles.
I can’t think of one OEM that hasn’t bought our reports in Japan. The Chinese buy a lot of our reports. The reports have sold really well in Korea. But only a few in Europe and one in North America.
It’s the other guys that are really serious. They want to know everything they can know about what’s going on with Tesla.

If Munro believes that Tesla has a lead now, he believes the Cybertruck will kick things into high gear by creating an entirely new vehicle segment.
I put it in a different classification. People want to call it a pickup truck. It’s not. It doesn’t fall into that class. I think it’s a new class.

Munro believes it’s going to be “an icon.” Five of his employees have a Cybertruck on order. …

V2G may be a rumour, but the latest Jason Yang video of Giga Shanghai shows 5 new structures in progress and founds for a 6th, on the only free area left undeveloped.

It is clear that Shanghai has moved from mid priority right onto the front burner.  There are one hell of a lot more cranes on site for this phase of the works and things are really flying.

I said, a while ago, that if Fremont could support Shanghai and Berlin, then adding Shanghai into the mix would support 4 parallel factory builds.

Now we see the second build of Shanghai, Berlin and two new factories in the US as a likely approach for the next 18 months.

Tesla keeps getting stronger.

Tesla lowers Model S, Model 3, and Model X pricing in eve of coming battery milestones
May 27, 2020
Quote
With such a widespread change in its vehicle pricing, speculations have emerged from the Tesla community about the reason behind the company’s recent adjustments. While some news outlets have noted that the reductions were likely implemented to boost wavering demand, a significant portion of the electric vehicle community are speculating that Tesla may have simply reached a point where its operations have become more efficient, and its production costs have gotten more optimized.
Quote
BREAKING: @Teslacn just cut Model S/X sales price by ¥29,000 & removed the perk of free supercharging. This price cut follows the price reduction for MIC SR+ and LR RWD Model 3 earlier. pic.twitter.com/Z80LbkrzRT
— RayTesla (@ray4tesla) May 27, 2020

Interestingly, such a scenario was mentioned by the company in its first quarter earnings call, when Chief Finance Officer Zachary Kirkhorn mentioned that the Gigafactory Shanghai produced Model 3 still has a lot of potential for further price reductions. This, of course, becomes particularly notable when one considers Tesla’s battery innovations.

The Silicon Valley-based carmaker was expected to hold a Battery Day event this month, but the event was postponed partly due to the onset of the coronavirus. Speculations are abounding about what Battery Day is poised to reveal, with many in the EV community estimating that Tesla will be announcing several milestones, such as a million-mile battery and a system that allows the company to produce cells at around $100/kWh or cheaper. If Tesla is indeed close to these milestones, then a reduction to its vehicles’s prices may definitely be warranted. ...

Tesla price target raised over Fremont’s reopening, strong Model 3 demand in China
May 27, 2020
Quote
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) received a higher price target from Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities on Wednesday morning, with the analyst putting his estimates at $800 a share. His previous mark was roughly a third less than his updated price target.

Ives’ increase in the price target for TSLA stock is based on his opinion that the electric car company is “turning the corner” in terms of demand and production recovery, following the reopening of the company’s Fremont facility. A note Ives wrote to clients stated his one-year target increase, along with his recommendations of a “Neutral” rating on the company’s shares. He has held this rating for over a year, The Street reported.

“While Tesla (and every other auto manufacturer) is navigating this unprecedented Covid-19 environment, the company took a major step forward around fulfilling demand and production concerns with the Fremont artery now up and running after the Musk vs. Alameda County stand-off got resolved,” Ives wrote. ...

Tesla’s Elon Musk gets performance-based payday worth nearly $800 million
May 29, 2020
Quote
Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk has earned the first portion of a windfall payout tied to stock options, Tesla said in a filing late Thursday.

As part of a performance-award agreement in Musk’s 2018 compensation package, the CEO stood to receive options to purchase shares if Tesla reached certain benchmarks, an important one being a market capitalization averaging $100 billion for six months.

One of 12 tranches under that package “has vested and become exercisable,” Tesla said in the filing. That is now “subject to Mr. Musk’s payment of the exercise price of $350.02 per share and the minimum five-year holding period generally applicable to any shares he acquires upon exercise," the company said.

At the end of the process, that would mean a paper profit around $775 million for Musk. Tesla shares ended Thursday at $805.81.

Musk has not taken a salary from Tesla, and “100% of Mr. Musk’s future compensation is ‘at-risk’” in the form of the remaining unvested stock options under the 2018 package and a 10-year performance-based stock option award granted in 2012, Tesla said in the filing. …

Elon Musk Quietly Waits In Line To Use Tesla Supercharger In Palm Bay, Florida
Quote
Images that have been shared of Musk in the Melbourne, Palm Bay Supercharger indicate that the CEO, his partner Grimes, and their baby briefly stopped at the charging location. Musk reportedly was there with a Tesla Model X and Model S, and he had his security with him. Despite this, the CEO was up for some photos with Tesla owners.

Mark Sola of the TESLA FLORIDA Facebook group, for one, remarked that Musk was “waiting in line just like the rest of us.” Raf Fiol, another Tesla owner who snapped a photo with the CEO, stated in a Twitter post that he and Musk ended up talking while they were at the Supercharger. Fiol added that Musk was “super friendly,” and the CEO chatted with owners for about 15 minutes. ...

800 million? The Board should raise this man's compensation package. Everything he does for the company is worth more than just 800 million. But I understand Musk's goal achieving mentality. It's working great.

Musk in Florida taking a picture with random Floridians just a few weeks after reopening? Not so smart. He would scrub a launch for less risk than what he is taking or imposing on others.

Jay Leno’s cybertruck episode was watched over 6.6 million times the first day it dropped, a new record for the show.  And the historic SpaceX launch brought a huge increase in Tesla searches on Google.  Rob Mauer discusses this and more, including a special announcement:  his content will now be available on thestreet.com — a site which also feeds Yahoo News and Apple News.  This should aid in wider distribution of more accurate Tesla information.

Tesla (TSLA) is becoming a ‘go-to stock’ like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft: analyst
Tesla remains the only company with an over $100 billion market cap that is up over 100% on the year.
June 4, 2020

Tesla stock (NASDAQ: TSLA) has climbed 401% over 52 weeks. Despite the Elon Musk-led company being bombarded by short sellers on a constant basis, there are hints that the automaker will eventually be recognized as one of the most notable stocks in the market.

Scott Redler of T3 Trading Group has high expectations for TSLA. Redler told Fox Business that the company is on its way to being in the midst of some of the most valuable and recognizable stocks in the financial sector.

He believes that TSLA is working steadily toward being “considered a go-to stock, same as Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.” Redler also stated that the company could reach $1,200 per share, a 36% spike from its current price.

TSLA stock closed at $882.96 yesterday.

UK News

A small factory assembling RHD vehicles, and helping to ramp Tesla Energy, in addition to R&D, might make sense.
A Tesla Gigafactory located in the UK could actually be a stroke of genius
Quote
The rumors of a potential Gigafactory UK initially emerged after European news agency AM-Online posted a report stating that the UK’s Department of International Trade (DIT) was on the hunt for a 4 million sq ft plot of land that would be utilized as a space to build an R&D center and manufacturing plant for Tesla. A DIT spokesperson initially related the information to local publication Property Week, which reports on commercial and residential real estate news in the area.

Even more interestingly, avid Tesla critics who were prone to following the flight paths of Elon Musk’s private plane have noted that the CEO had landed at the Luton Airport on Wednesday. The purpose of Musk’s visit remains unknown, of course, though his presence in the country added fuel to the rumors of a potential Tesla facility hosted in the United Kingdom. …

Tesla Model 3 is the top-selling car in the U.K. for a second month but as showrooms reopen it could be overtaken

Tesla’s Model 3 was the U.K.’s highest selling car in May, the second month in a row that the electric vehicle outpaced rivals in a pandemic hit auto market. But don’t expect the run to last too much longer -- with physical showrooms set to reopen on Monday, analysts say sales of other vehicles could overtake the Model 3 soon.

Overall car sales fell 89% in May compared with the same month a year ago, figures released on Thursday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show. Sales are down 51% in the first five months of 2020 and in April saw the biggest drop since World War II. …

Not such a small factory, the UK car market is currently 2.3 million per year down from 2.6m in 2016.  When you assemble rhd for the UK you also position for Ireland too.

If Tesla were to aim for 10% of the UK car market they would need to allow for a capacity of up to 260k per year at full ramp.  More ambitious and the size of the initial Giga Shanghai would make more sense.

As for R&D, there are sizeable funds going for EV tech, Autonomous driving and power cell manufacture.

Also, as the negotiations with the EU continue to go south, €38bn worth of UK vehicle imports (82% of the whole), become a target for UK manufacture or non EU import.

Tesla has to see this as an opportunity and I'm pretty sure the UK government would like to make value out of the situation. It may be that it becomes cheaper to ship Tesla's to the UK from the US, rather than from Berlin.  Giving Tesla a need to reduce costs and an incentive to manufacture locally in the UK.

You might consider these rumours advanced warning of how the Brexit negotiations are considered in the UK.

Just to set the scene...

Then again it could all be smoke and mirrors. Except the Brexit bit, that's already dead, the doctor has just not written the death certificate.

The Wall Street Journal loves the OEMs and fossil fuel companies;  back when Dan Neil posted a positive review of the Model 3, the attacks on him were severe enough he had to leave Twitter for a while.  Let’s hope the reception is more civil this time — he does address the most popular critical points — if people read past the headline.

Is Tesla’s Model Y Crossover the World’s Best Car?
After years of extravagant R&D, the Silicon Valley car maker has accumulated a pile of patents and a mountain of innovations. No wonder the Model Y is years ahead of the competition, says Dan Neil.
By June 5, 2020 10:00 am ET
Quote
I WAS DEBATING whether to proclaim the new Tesla Model Y the best car in the world. Given that the all-electric medium-size crossover ($57,190 for the Long Range Dual Motor AWD, as tested) is the most technically advanced electric automobile made; and that electric cars are functionally superior to those powered by internal combustion; there is a certain Vulcan logic to it.

Reasonable earthlings may disagree. This high-waisted version of the Model 3 sedan—with roughly 70% of the same parts, says the company—isn’t exactly lovely, a quality every tiara-wearing total package ought to have, don’t you think? The Y is 7.1 inches taller (+1.1 inch ground clearance) than the 3, a couple inches longer and nearly 3 inches wider. Under the liftback (very like a Model X) is about 53 cubic feet of storage, with another 15 or so in the front trunk. If the 3 is a cute short stack of pancakes, the Y is the pile they serve you at Denny’s.

From behind the wheel of the Model Y, every competitor in the category feels like a sluggish, sloppy antique.

I look forward to a day when car critics can again suck their thumbs and opine about emotionally chilly styling and split hairs about human factors. Meanwhile, we have this car, this one program, beating the competition on core technology like a drum. From behind the wheel, everything else in this category—Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar F-Pace, Porsche Macan—feels like a sluggish, sloppy antique, a squawking modem trying to connect to the cloud.
...
Even setting aside the Y’s brawny batteries and humma-hunka motors, this car is a little dreadnought of innovation, advancing in fields as diverse as body engineering and HVAC systems. Because heating and air-conditioning can be a huge drain on batteries, Tesla developed a super-efficient heat pump for climate control; as well as a remarkably compact network of coolant loops coming together at the “Octovalve,” serving the thermal needs of disparate systems. The HVAC’s efficiency is crucial to the Y’s 316 miles of range.

The touch screen interface, and the graphical software behind it—smart, playful, situationally aware, connected to the hilt—sets a standard that other infotainment and driver-assistance systems undershoot by a mile. The voice-command system works well out of the box, and its error rate declines with use. ...

Fremont was a Toyota plant originally wasn't it?

I'm wondering if they would?  It is pretty clear that their new factories are not designed for compromise and any existing facility would be exactly that.

Honda may review that decision after 31 Dec too.  They might find that manufacturing outside the UK, after that, will be prohibitive on tariffs.

Today I was ruminating on Tesla production and deliveries for Q2 20.  I have been doing a lot of reading and seeing a lot of figures being thrown about.  Some seem to be wishful thinking (shorts), whilst others seem to be, at first look, a bit high.

So I thought I'd go back to 2019 and then extrapolate forwards.

In 2019 Tesla was comfortably producing 7k vehicles per day.

So we can take that figure and use it as a base for Fremont. Especially as it did not include the Y which is now in production.

Q2 is 12 weeks and 6 days, so let's take 12 weeks.  Fremont restarted 7 weeks before the end of quarter so let's take 6 weeks.

Tesla was left with 15k stock on hand, so available to deliver.

Giga Shanghai finished Q1 with a run rate of 3k per week but suffered a week of shutdown due to holidays, parts and other maintenance.  However it restarted and gained close to 4k per week which has been sustained. So I assume that 3k per week average is reasonable.

Using these figures, Tesla should be able to deliver around

42k vehicles from Fremont
15k from stock
36k from Shanghai.

I make that 93k vehicles.  It could be lower and it could be higher, but I believe this to be a feasible attainment for Tesla.

It might seem a little surprising but I believe the true surprise will be Q3 20 and just how many vehicles they produce and deliver.

Anyone thinking Q2 will be 55k is kidding themselves.

If they do achieve it, the stock will go wild because they will have delivered more than Q1 and are likely to turn a profit on it.

Being right too soon is socially unacceptable.

Tesla takes a step towards the Model Y’s single-piece cast with 410-ton machine purchase
Quote
It appears that Tesla is now at a point where it is ready to pursue the Model Y’s single-piece cast. As indicated in a recent report on SAE Automotive Engineering, Tesla has purchased a machine from the IDRA Group, an Italian firm that makes HPDC equipment. What is rather interesting is that the machine that Tesla purchased is a gargantuan piece of equipment capable of producing the Model Y’s special components.

The machine that Tesla purchased, called the IDRA OL6100 CS, features an upgraded locking force that’s specially designed for the Model Y’s castings. Interestingly enough, the OL6100 CS is fondly dubbed as the “Giga Press” due to its size and power. The machine is 64 feet long and 17 feet high, and it weighs a whopping 410 tons. That’s roughly as heavy as five Space Shuttles. …

We were talking, earlier, about the consequences of Tesla being forced to shut down Fremont, then the unwillingness of Alameda County to allow it to open again.

An interesting article from Tesmanin on June 8th states that Spacex terminated interest in a facility at the port of Los Angeles on March 27th.  4 days after Fremont shut down.

https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/los-angeles-starship

I do not believe that is a coincidence.  I suspect that if Musk has his way the entire Fremont factory will be replaced with a custom built Tesla factory more centrally located in the country.

Although California may have fallen out of Musk’s favor, a bigger reason for terminating the L.A. Port project — which was to be for Starship — is that the Starship factory in Boca Chica, Texas, has expanded so fast that the idea of fabricating the huge steel rings in L.A. and shipping them to Boca Chica via the Panama Canal (they’re too big to go by road) no longer makes sense.

Tesla Semi Trucks Now Ready For Volume Production, Leaked Email By Elon Musk
Reuters just recently also reported the same news minutes after we did, rumor is now confirmed.
Latest Update: Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter about the latest leaked email is real
Quote
Rumor of an unconfirmed email screenshot from Tesla CEO Elon Musk had sent out to all Tesla employees. The email is about the company is now ready to "go all out and bring the Tesla Semi to volume production"

"It's time to go all out and bring the Tesla Semi to volume production. It's been in limited production so far, which has allowed us to improve many aspects of the design.

Production of the battery and powertrain would take place at Giga Nevada, with most of the other work probably occurring in other states.

Jerome and I are excited to work with you to bring this amazing product to market!
Elon"

Tesla Model 3 gross margin could be as high as 39% in China: report
Quote
Recent reports from China point to the idea that the Made-in-China Tesla Model 3 Standard Range+ is making the electric automaker money hand-over-fist, with a nearly 40% gross margin. The large margins Tesla is making on the SR+ Model 3 indicate the company is making a lot of headway in improving its vehicle production process, potentially making way for even more affordable cars.

Tesla owner-enthusiast @Ray4Tesla spotted a post from Chinese technology company Sina Technology, which recently posted details about the MIC Model 3 SR+ and its sizable gross margins.

Sina indicates that the MIC Model 3 SR+ delivered by Tesla in Q1 2020 has a gross margin of 39.37%. This means that with its ¥271,550 price tag ($38,275), the vehicle actually costs ¥188,700 to produce ($26,653). Assuming that Sina‘s figures are accurate, Tesla China could be making a profit of around ¥82,285 ($11,622) per Model 3 SR+ sold.

This gross price margin exceeds that of any other luxury vehicle, according to Sina. …

If Tesla can eke out a profit for Q2, entry into the S&P 500 should follow.

Last year several of us pointed out the advantages of manufacturing in China for profit.  GSY dismissed them all as wishful thinking.

This gives Tesla significant scope to reduce prices in China as volumes grow.  Increasing their share of the market.
Being right too soon is socially unacceptable.

Model S Long Range Plus: Building the First 400-Mile Electric Vehicle
Quote
Starting today, all North American Model S Long Range Plus vehicles have an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles, representing a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design.

This significant achievement reflects Tesla’s obsession with efficiency and energy frugality, and is realized through several changes, both iterative and transformational, in core hardware and system architecture development by the Tesla engineering, design and production teams. These changes went into production earlier this year when we first started manufacturing Model S Long Range Plus at our factory in Fremont, California. All Model S Long Range Plus vehicles will receive the new 402-mile rating.

Here’s what’s new:
Significant Mass Reduction …
New “Tempest” Aero Wheels and Tires …
Increased Drive Unit Efficiency …
Maximizing Regenerative Braking …
Continued Investment in Supercharging …

Tesla receives approval to become an electric utility provider in the UK
By Simon Alvarez June 15, 2020
Quote
Tesla has officially been granted an electricity generation license in the United Kingdom, in response to the electric car maker’s application last April. Reports indicate that the approval paves the way for Tesla to establish a virtual power plant in the region, which would be managed by its custom Autobidder software, a real-time trading and control platform that enables power producers to monetize battery assets.

Last May, Tesla made headlines when reports emerged that Tesla Energy production sales director Evan Rice applied for a license to generate electricity to the UK’s Gas and Electricity Markets Authority. This was a rather surprising move from the electric car maker, considering that it has not adopted a similar strategy in the United States, the site of the majority of its existing operations. Tesla, for its part, opted to keep silent about its reasons behind the company’s decision to apply for the license.

The approval of Tesla’s application was posted in a release from the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) dated June 12, 2020. As per the release, Ofgem would be allowing Tesla to generate electricity in Great Britain, the territorial sea adjacent to Great Britain, or in a Renewable Energy Zone. …

Tesla Reportedly Delivering Cars In Michigan, On Big Three Turf
Quote
Michigan has banned the sale of Tesla vehicles for years, due to the direct-sales situation.

According to several reports from Tesla owners, the automaker is officially delivering its vehicles for the first time inside Michigan state lines. While Tesla shoppers [no] longer have to drive to Ohio to take delivery, the sales contract still must say the car was bought in another state, which seems plain silly.

Tesla still can't legally sell its cars in several states since it doesn't rely on franchised dealerships. The automaker sells its cars online and directly. This direct sales method goes against traditional automakers' systems that have been in place for years. …

Tesla Inks Battery Agreement With Panasonic
These two companies are charging up their partnership for several more years.

According to the revision, the agreement will expire 10 years "after Panasonic achieves certain manufacturing milestones."

In addition, Tesla revealed that it had entered into a pricing agreement with Panasonic lasting through March 2023 related to Panasonic's manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cells at the Gigafactory. Tesla To Drop Autopilot’s Green Light Confirmation In Coming Software Update — Confirmed
June 18th, 2020 by Zachary Shahan
Quote
Rumor is, Tesla is going to remove the requirement to tell the car to go through a green light in the next software update. Or, more precisely, the rumor is that it’s going to soon update the software for some Early Access drivers to do this. (Update: This is not really a rumor at this point, as it has been confirmed with photos of the software update description.)

Simply put, Tesla vehicles will be able to drive through green lights on their own in coming months or weeks.

The next steps after that to get to full Full Self Driving (if that makes sense) are:
1   The car takes turns on its own.
2   The car drives from a road through a parking lot to a parking space on its own (and vice versa).
3   The car does #2 and then parks on its own.
There are surely other necessary updates — like going through roundabouts, which is reportedly coming very soon as well — but the above three updates would be the big three to finish out the Full Self Driving software suite as many of us imagine it. …

Tesla has acquired a 2,100-acre plot of land 12 miles outside of Austin in what could be the home to its upcoming Cybertruck production facility.
An application from the Texas Comptroller’s office describes Tesla’s plans to develop and design a “high-tech electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Travis County.” This provides a strong indicator that Tesla has chosen Texas to be the home of its next EV production facility.
The application states, “Tesla Inc is evaluating the possible development, design, and construction of a high tech electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Travis County within the Austin Green property located at the intersection of SH-130 and Harold Green Road. Attached is an exhibit that shows the planned layout of the facility on the site and is subject to confidentiality assertions above.”…

2. Tesla is significantly ahead of competitors in product range, capacity and technology. Near term, EV friendly incentives in the EU and lower priced Model 3 support H2 volume, making Tesla more resilient than peers. The analyst maintained a Buy rating, stating
3. "Tesla is still the only legacy-free OEM engaged in a +ve EV sum game. Against expectations even a few months back, the gap with peers is widening, from product to battery tech/capacity. We fear volatility may remain high but raise our DCF-based PT to $1,250 on higher mid-term

The Lowest Price for Home Solar
Quote
Today we are introducing the lowest-ever cost to go solar in the United States. Our average system size is now one-third less expensive than the industry average and we have recently introduced a lowest-price guarantee. If you change your mind after purchasing or are unhappy with the system, we will uninstall it and issue a full refund within seven days from system turn on.

Our new pricing is made possible by several simple improvements to a decades-old industry. We made ordering and installing solar easy by moving to fixed sizes that customers can order with a single click online — no more need to spend hours in consultations reviewing old utility bills. More than 80 percent of our customers move forward with the standard size recommended by our website, and the move to a digital experience helped cut our sales and marketing costs by 64 percent.

We used these savings to make solar more affordable for customers, and also to build software that improves the experience of going solar. Our internal software platform now automates solar panel placement for energy optimization on a roof, significantly reducing the time needed to design a new system. We also continue to invest in core technologies that raise the efficiency of our solar systems, including new premium panels with higher power and efficiency, as well as integrated software and hardware that reduces the cost of solar interconnection and makes pairing solar with Powerwall easier than ever.

If $TSLA model Y weren’t selling well, TSLA would cut price or start taking orders now for the Y SR+ at $42,900. Y has an 4-8 wk delivery est and 3SX are all now 8-12 wks because TSLA built extra Ys to last several months so can start producing 7-Seat and SR+ models.

Anyone want to speculate on Tesla’s Q2 results?

Not sure exactly, but my guess is for the results to be pretty fraudy.
