Yeah, damn it.

Bolsonaro has indicated he may open Indigenous areas up to mining, even potentially introducing a paved highway through the Amazon. The environmental impact of those policies would be “the biggest threat to the Amazon since Brazil was under a dictatorship,” said Doug Boucher, Scientific Advisor for The Union of Concerned Scientists’ Tropical Forests and Climate Initiative. “It’s a threat to the climate of the entire planet.”

...

Bolsonaro has also made his views on race blatantly clear: He has criticized the Brazilian government’s commitment to preserving vast swaths of the Amazon for Indigenous people, promising that he will “not to give the Indians another inch of land.” Moreover, Bolsonaro has allied himself with the right-wing ruralista bloc, which represents the interests of agribusinesses and large landholders, and has been trying to strip away environmental protections against deforestation for many years.

Bolsonaro’s proposed environmental hit list goes on. He has promised to scrap the country’s Environment Ministry altogether, putting it under the scope of the Agriculture Ministry, which is led by agribusiness.

“Instead of spreading the message that he will fight deforestation and organized crime, he says he will attack the ministry of environment, Ibama and ICMBio [Brazil’s federal environment agencies],” said Brazil’s current environment minister, Edson Duarte. “It’s the same as saying that he will withdraw the police from the streets.”

In many ways, Bolsonaro, an ex-army captain, seems to want to revert to the Amazonian policies that Brazil employed during the years of the South American nation’s dictatorship. At that time, during the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, the country promoted rapid development of the Amazon, paving roads and converting the forests into farmland and ranchland.

Many Europeans are unable to make a difference, all the following are 'fascists' to them:

Jair Bolsonaro
Donald Trump
Viktor Orbán (hungary)
Rodrigo Duterte (Philippines)
Moamar Ghaddafi (Libya)
Sadam Hussein
Adolf Hitler

Are there degrees in hell?
Why do a majority of people vote for fascists to be their president in free and fair democratic elections?

That's the right question! Although these people are all not equivalent (Fascists is the wrong word for them as a group) the reasons they rose to power are quite the same. Maybe the "other side" went to far? Maybe globalism has gone too far too fast in the recent history?

Ok, i am no fan of Bolsonaro either but i think there are a few misconceptions people have about The Amazon, indigenous and so on.

-Encroachment, deforestation and similar problems are actually worse in other provinces such as Acre or western Brazil.(or neighboring countries)
The Living Planet report just released mentions how from 1970-2014 The Amazon lost 20%.
Rather alarmingly, it also mentions how population decline of wildlife is worst in places such as river, estuaries etc at 83% overall, and how Central and South America overall is showing a 89% loss even!

- Similarly the situation of the indigenous people is also worse in those already more affected areas, while Amazonia still offers more refuge.
Tribes such as the Akuntsu, Munduruku or others who gained fame often actually live elsewhere or emerge from tiny remaining forest patches in more developed areas, or also places like Peru or Colombia.
This offers some hope that others remain unidentified in the heart of the Amazon.
I suspect many do myself.
You can find a truly excellent database here btw: https://pib.socioambiental.org/en/Table_of_Indigenous_Peoples

So in general concerning "the lungs of the Earth" what we appear to see is an encirclement working it's way inward from the edges and damaging habitat in the process.
For logistical reasons, it may not be that different under Bolsonaro in that respect and would still take a long time to truly destroy the Amazon.
(Of course his loathing of the indigenous and the habitat remains outrageous)
Climate change may do more damage and considerably faster through factors such as droughts and failure to cope evolutionary in time.
A study over the last 30 years which i just read speaks of how this is mostly affecting smaller species of trees.
Taller and more drought resistant vegetation less affected but still in trouble nonetheless.
No link for that, it has been paywalled sorry.

We'll have to wait and see of course but Bolsonaro is neither the first or only hard ass to mention he doesn't care about it all and placing industrial activity before environment.
That has been happening historically anyway and he may do outrageous things but i doubt it is possible for his regime to ramp it up by 200% or whatever out of the blue.

Bolsonaro’s deforestation of the Amazon has already begun
http://www.climatechangenews.com/2018/11/14/bolsonaros-deforestation-amazon-already-begun/
Quote
Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon jumped almost 50% during the three month electoral season that brought Jair Bolsonaro to power, according to preliminary official figures.

That means the forest lost 1,674 sq km from August to October, an area more than double the size of New York City.

The main culprit was the conversion of forest to pasture. The largest increase was in the border area between Acre and Amazonas states. The deforestation increase there, compared with the same period in 2017, was 273% and 114%, respectively.

Deforestation usually increases in Brazil’s electoral years, amid promises from local politicians they will open up protected land or make environmental legislation more flexible if elected.

A slightly older article by Jonathan Cook:
https://www.jonathan-cook.net/blog/2018-10-30/bolsonaro-is-a-monster-engineered-by-our-media/
Quote
Social media has empowered ordinary people. It has shown them that they cannot trust their leaders, that power trumps justice, that the elite’s enrichment requires their poverty. They have concluded that, if the rich can engage in slash-and-burn politics against the planet, our only refuge, they can engage in slash-and-burn politics against the global elite.

Are they choosing wisely in electing a Trump or Bolsonaro? No. But the liberal guardians of the status quo are in no position to judge them. For decades, all parts of the corporate media have helped to undermine a genuine left that could have offered real solutions, that could have taken on and beaten the right, that could have offered a moral compass to a confused, desperate and disillusioned public.

Jenkins wants to lecture the masses about their depraved choices while he and his paper steer them away from any politician who cares about their welfare, who fights for a fairer society, who prioritises mending what is broken.

The western elites will decry Bolsonaro in the forlorn and cynical hope of shoring up their credentials as guardians of the existing, supposedly moral order. But they engineered him. Bolsonaro is their monster.

They are very right that they elected the Trumps and the Bolsonaros. Over here we have football scandal in first class. The import players from africa, and the sums of money that circle finds it's origine in all kinds of criminal activity. And all these football players know that they are a part in the chain of these criminals. So even if they know that everything around them is fraud and criminal, they will be silent. Because they are a part of that chain. So every day  that corrupt group becomes a bigger part of our country. Rotten to the core.

your findings that there is a lot of corruption and other crimes on highest levels you're not that far off but if you think that faschists and other populist potential autocrats are better and would solve only one thing without replacing the wiped out corruption with their own, that would be quite naive.

most politicians operate with pointing at true grievances only to either join or replace them with their own iteration once in charge.

Jair Bolsonaro(PoisonNearly) has already & will increase this level of Amazon forest..... disappearance. Besides the forest crush, Brazil has a long history of 10,000 humans who have.... disappeared. More about poisonous Jair Bolsonaro(PoisonNearly):
Cuba is withdrawing ~ 3000 Cuban doctors from the poorest regions of Brazil. Under severe strictures imposed by Bolsonaro(PoisonNearly) authoritarianism, the Cuban government's humanitarian efforts are ending. The Amazon rainforest fires reveal a lot about this political movement.

Bolsonaro has been dubbed the “Trump of the Tropics,” a far-right firebrand who shares the American president’s hostility to democracy and penchant for saying extremely offensive things about women and minorities. The similarities clearly extend to climate policy — Trump famously labeled climate change a Chinese hoax, pulled out of the Paris agreement on climate change, and recently presented a “carbon regulation” plan that could actually increase emissions.

The American and Brazilian leaders are particularly aggressive on the issue, but they’re hardly alone among Western right-wingers. A February report from the German Adelphi Institute, an environmental think tank, found that 18 out of the 21 largest European far-right parties are either generally indifferent to climate action or outright oppose it.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Britain’s Brexit party, recently called climate change a “scam” during an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Germany’s Alternatives for Deutschland (AfD) claims in its most recent electoral platform that “CO2 is not a pollutant, but an indispensable component of all life.”

Jair Bolsonaro’s neglect of the Amazon has made him “the most despised and detested leader” on earth, Brazil’s former environment minister has claimed, as the far-right leader again rebuked French president Emmanuel Macron for challenging his environmental record.

Rubens Ricupero warned Bolsonaro was wreaking havoc on both Brazil’s environment and its global standing, as Bolsonaro used Facebook to scold Macron’s “inappropriate and gratuitous attacks” over the Amazon fires and insult France’s first lady.

'The Amazon stays, Bolsonaro goes': A first-person dispatch from Amazon fire protests in Brazil
https://www.nationalobserver.com/2019/08/29/features/amazon-stays-bolsonaro-goes
Quote
On Monday, the G7 offered US$22 million in fire-fighting aid to Brazil. Bolsonaro called the move and further international criticism of his government an “echo of colonialism,” chastising countries with colonial histories and relationships for trying to play saviour to the Amazon, acting as if Brazil is a “no man’s land,” as Bolsonaro tweeted Monday.

While some may argue he has a point, many Brazilians heard only hypocrisy coming out of the mouth of a man bent on supporting industrial development at the risk of continuous violation of the rights of the country’s most exploited people and one of the planet’s most important ecosystems.

On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump, whose journey to presidency isn’t unlike Bolsonaro’s, tweeted his support for the president and the 43,000 armed forces that have recently been sent to fight the fires, while precious lives and lands remain on the line.

Brazil's Bolsonaro Accused of Crimes Against Humanity at ICC for His Record On the Amazon
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/23/jair-bolsonaro-could-face-charges-in-the-hague-over-amazon-rainforest
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/10/12/americas/brazil-bolsonaro-icc-crimes-against-humanity-intl/index.html

A group of climate lawyers has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his alleged attacks on the Amazon, which they say amount to "crimes against humanity."

Austrian not-for-profit AllRise filed a landmark complaint at the court in the Dutch city of The Hague on Tuesday. It argues that the actions of Bolsonaro and his administration are a "widespread attack on the Amazon, its dependents and its defenders that not only result in the persecution, murder and inhumane suffering in the region, but also upon the global population," the group said in a statement.

The 286-page filing said there were grounds for "an urgent and thorough ICC investigation and prosecution."

It cites "the ongoing widespread attack on the Brazilian Legal Amazon and on its Environmental Dependents and Defenders contrary to Article 7 and Article 25(3)(c) of the Rome Statute."

"This attack, and the multiple crimes that have occurred under its aegis -- which include but are not limited to murder ... persecution ... and other inhumane acts of a similar character ... -- necessitate an urgent and thorough ICC investigation and prosecution," reads the filing.

As well as arguing that crimes against humanity have been committed against individuals who depend on and work to protect the rainforest, the petition says Bolsonaro holds responsibility for future suffering that will happen as a result of his Amazon policies.

"Climate science demonstrates that consequent fatalities, devastation and insecurity will occur on a far greater scale regionally and globally, long into the future, through the attributable links between the rapid acceleration in deforestation, its contribution to climate change, and the frequency and intensification of extreme weather events," reads the filing.

The document, which was handed over to the ICC prosecutor, is supported by the Climate Observatory, a group of 70 Brazilian civil society organizations.

The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, should face murder charges for his role in the country’s “stratospheric” coronavirus death toll, a draft report from a senate inquiry into Brazil’s Covid crisis has recommended.

The 1,078-page document, published by Brazilian media on Tuesday afternoon, is not due to be voted on by the commission until next week and could yet be modified by senators.

https://static.poder360.com.br/2021/10/Relatorio_CPI-da-Covid-19.out_.2021.pdf

But the draft text paints a devastating portrait of the neglect, incompetence and anti-scientific denialism many believe has defined the Bolsonaro administration’s response to a public health emergency that has killed more than 600,000+ Brazilians.

Bolsonaro’s “deliberate and conscious” decision to delay buying Covid vaccines needlessly condemned thousands of citizens to early graves, the report claims.

“The mathematics of the situation was clear: the more infections, the more death. Without vaccines mortality would have been stratospheric, as it turned out to be,” the document says, before concluding: “We will never forget.”

Brazil Senators Back Criminal Charges Against Bolsonaro Over Covid Handling
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-59051105.amp

A Senate committee in Brazil has voted to recommend that President Jair Bolsonaro face charges over his handling of the Covid pandemic.

Seven of the panel's 11 members backed a report calling for nine charges to be filed against Mr Bolsonaro, including crimes against humanity.

The committee chair, Senator Omar Aziz, will send the findings to Brazil's prosecutor-general on Wednesday.

The vote concludes a six-month inquiry which has revealed scandals and corruption inside Brazil's government.

... But for many, it's too little, too late - the families of the more than 600,000 people who died from the virus will be wanting to know where this inquiry will lead. Will Bolsonaro have to stand up in court to defend his actions?

Why the UN added Brazil to the Hunger Map once again

The UN found that 61.3 million Brazilians face food insecurity

Despite being one of the world's largest food producers, Brazil has now returned to the United Nations’ (UN) Hunger Map, eight years after reducing food insecurity enough to be removed from the list.

The study categorizes a country as lacking food when more than 2.5 percent of the population faces a chronic lack of food — in Brazil, with 214 million inhabitants, the estimated rate is 4.1 percent.

Released in early July, the report states that between 702 and 828 million people around the world went hungry in 2021.

In Brazil, the debate on food insecurity and hunger intensified with the COVID-19 pandemic, but it had already been worsening in recent years: between 2019 and 2021, more than 15 million Brazilians were affected, according to the UN.

Hunger in numbers

Over 61 million Brazilians live in some type of food insecurity, according to a recent survey by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). More than 15 million face serious food insecurity, as highlighted by the website G1.

...

Between 2004 and 2013, policies to end poverty and hardship were implemented in Brazil and reduced hunger to less than half of the initial rate: from 9.5 percent to 4.2 percent, according to the report “Look at the Hunger.”

In 2010, a report made by the NGO Active Aid ranked Brazil as the leader among developing countries with the most efficient policies to reduce hunger.

The scrapping of some of these policies may have impacted the current situation. According to the study by Oxfam, Rede Penssan, and others, “the poor public management of the pandemic in Brazil is an aggravating factor in this pre-existing situation:”

...

Under Bolsonaro's government, the Food and Nutrition Security Council (Consea) was dissolved, as was the Bolsa Familia, a program to help low-income families. In its place, Auxílio Brasil was created, which provided R$400 (about $77 USD) to beneficiaries — with its renewal, the amount is to be increased, but only until December 2022.

Lula beats Bolsonaro to return as Brazil president
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-latin-america-63407865

Far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro is defeated by left-wing ex-President Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva in the deciding round of Brazil’s presidential vote

Lula won 50.8% of all valid votes to nearly 49.2% for Bolsonaro

... Riot police patrolled São Paulo's most important street, Avenida Paulista, as votes were being counted.

Electoral Court Chief Justice Alexandre De Moraes cracked down on online disinformation, removing 701 URLs and banning 15 profiles of “big fake news spreaders”.

The biggest concern throughout the day was an unusually high number of roadblocks carried by the federal highway police. Moraes said they may have delayed people from voting, but did not stop them.

... There was much bitterness, vitriol and division both from the candidates and their followers.

That polarisation is unlikely to disappear. Congress is dominated by lawmakers loyal to Bolsonaro and Lula will face an uphill struggle to get his policies past them.

Bolsonaro supporters were confident of victory and this will be a shock to them.

Lula Wins Brazilian Election, But Bolsonaro Does Not Concede
https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/lula-wins-brazilian-election-bolsonaro-has-not-conceded-2022-10-31/

SAO PAULO/BRASILIA, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Brazilian leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva narrowly defeated President Jair Bolsonaro in a runoff election, but the far right incumbent did not concede defeat on Sunday night, raising concerns that he might contest the result.

Brazil Election: Bolsonaro Supporters Block Roads After Poll Defeat
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-63467982

Brazilian lorry drivers who support outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro have blocked roads across the country, after his poll defeat to leftist rival Lula.

Blockages were reported in all but two states, causing considerable disruption and affecting food supply chains.

With all the votes counted, Lula had 50.9% of the valid votes against Mr Bolsonaro's 49.1% in Sunday's run-off.

The incumbent far-right president has neither conceded defeat nor challenged the results that divided the nation.

There are concerns that the outgoing president could complicate the two-month transition period before Lula (full name Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva), a former president, is due to be sworn in on 1 January 2023.

Pro-Bolsonaro lorry drivers started setting up roadblocks across the vast country soon after the election results were announced.

By Monday night, the federal highway police reported 342 such incidents, with the biggest protests going on in the country's south. Some of the blockages were later cleared by police.

Many lorry drivers have benefited from lower diesel costs during the Bolsonaro administration.

Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes on Monday ordered the police to disperse the roadblocks immediately.

... Combative statements from ex-president Bolsonaro in the past - such as that "only God" could remove him from office - mean there is a tense wait for him to appear in public. Before the election, he had repeatedly cast unfounded doubts on the voting system.

Shouldn’t this thread be closed and perhaps a new one opened with a different header?

Bolsonaro has conceded in practice.

The Supreme Court validated Lula’s win yesterday.

Lula is no fascist.

Good news in this thread and its title. While Brazil has got rid of Bolsonaro, Israel has finally gone full fascist-fundamentalist in its recent elections.

Bolsonaro Supporters Breach Security Barriers, Break Into Brazilian Congress, Supreme Court and Presidential Palace
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/01/08/americas/brazil-bolsonaro-supporters-breach-congress/index.html

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday breached security barriers set up by the Armed Forces and gained access to key buildings for each of the three branches of government, including the congressional building, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Presidential Palace, according to images shown in Brazilian media.

Footage showed massive crowds in the capital of Brasília walking up a ramp that leads to the congressional building, where they had reached the Green Room, located outside the lower House of Congress' chamber, Interim Senate President Veneziano Vital do Rogo told CNN Brasil.

Other outlets showed Bolsonaro suporters entering the Supreme Court and the presidential palace, where CNN Brasil showed the arrivals of anti-riot police and the Brazilian Armed Forces. Inside, protesters were using furniture to build barricades to prevent police from entering, CNN Brasil reported.

The breaches come about a week after the inauguration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, whose return to power after a 12-year hiatus comes after he defeated Bolsonaro in a run-off election on October 30.

Neither house of Congress is currently in session. And while President Lula is not currently in the building, a team assembled for the newly-elected president was working inside the palace at the time the protesters entered, CNN Brasil reported. Officials at Planalto Palace are waiting for the Air Force to evacuate them from the building, per CNN Brasil.

President Lula on Sunday described the events as "barbaric" and called the Bolsonaro protesters who breached the government buildings "fascists."

"These people are everything that is abominable in politics, to invade the government headquarters, the headquarters of Congress and the headquarters of the Supreme Court like true vandals destroying everything in their path," Lula said.

The president held the press conference in Araraquara, Sao Paulo, where he had been surveying areas damaged by heavy floods.

Brazilian officials condemned the actions of demonstrators, which were reminiscent of January 6, 2021, when rioters stormed the US Capitol in an effort to prevent the certification of the 2020 election and President Joe Biden's win over former President Donald Trump.

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/bolsonaro-supporters-invade-congress-presidential-palace-brasilia-2023-01-08/

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in the most fraught election in a generation last year, announced a federal security intervention in Brasilia lasting until Jan. 31 after capital security forces initially were overwhelmed by the invaders.

Around 6.30 p.m. local time, some three hours after the initial reports of the invasion, security forces managed to retake the three buildings, GloboNews reported. TV images showed dozens of rioters being led away in handcuffs.

Local media estimated about 3,000 people were involved.

There was no immediate word from Bolsonaro, who has barely spoken in public since losing the election. He flew to Florida 48 hours before the end of his mandate and was absent from Lula's inauguration.

... Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha wrote on Twitter that he had fired his top security official, Anderson Torres, previously Bolsonaro's justice minister. The solicitor general's office said it had filed a request for Torres' arrest.

Torres told website UOL that he was with his family on holiday in the United States, and had not met with Bolsonaro. UOL said he was in Orlando, where Bolsonaro is currently based.
