Barneo 2019
« on: December 05, 2018, 03:45:06 PM »
Preparations are underway for the Barneo ice expedition in spring 2019:

This - translated using google translate from their Facebook posting:

Friends, we haven’t told you anything about Barneo for a long time. Meanwhile, the preparation for the next season is in full swing. An inventory of equipment has passed, the sewing workshop eliminates minor defects. The airborne group began laying parachute systems, and the technical team began manufacturing platforms for the landing of fuel. In general, everything is as usual

There was me thinking now was about the time to open a Barneo 2019 thread, only to discover that it's been here for months!

Not a lot of news to be had just yet, but the North Pole Marathon site states that:

Quote
Please note: The 2019 race field is full but submission of this 2020 application form will put you on the wait list for 2019.

and their Facebook page had this to say a couple of weeks ago:

Quote
There are 110 men and 32 women who have completed marathons on all 7 continents and at the North Pole. A few more will join this exclusive club after the 2019 North Pole Marathon on April 9th.

A bit more Barneo related news:

In mid-April, 14 school students from Moscow will set out for the North Pole under the Big Arctic Expedition. One of the teams headed by Matvei Shparo is to ski about 100 kilometers toward the Top of the World, with members of the second team conducting experiments at the Barneo drifting station.

Plus this new "promotional" video from "Barneo LLC":

OMG, this one gave me anxiety from watching. How do they know that the ice will not crack right below their feet??  :o

Thanks for sharing, Jim.

They don't. In fact fairly often it does!

How good is your comprehension of Russian expletives?

In contrast to videos of testosterone fuelled Russians and disappearing structures, a more contemplative vision of the North Pole from South West England's very own Ann Daniels:

Ann assures me that she won't be heading for Barneo 2019, but she does however have major plans for 2020!

Good news from the North Pole: The construction of a temporary North Pole camp (Barneo) is underway. A Russian logistics crew in Mi-8 choppers have located a suitable ice floe to build a runway and personnel have been air dropped via an IL-76 aircraft.

The images are from the Barneo Russian language Facebook page.

The Barents Observer reports that:

Quote
Two helicopters first flew over the area to find a suitable site for camp. Then came an air drop of people and equipment from an aircraft Il-76.

The helicopters in mid-March left Krasnoyarsk and had pit stops in Igarka and Khatanga, Vesti Yamal reports. They then circled over the North Pole ice in search of the best ice floe. People and equipment was put on the ice and preparations made for the air drop.

The Il-76 flew from Murmansk on the 27th March after a 5-day delay because of bad weather. On board were several tons of equipment, including barrels of fuel, two tractors, foodstuff and material for building the ice camp, B-port reports.

The Barents Observer also reports that:

Quote
It is Soviet ice hockey star Vyacheslav Fetisov who is behind the initiative to assemble a bunch of former top players on the Arctic ice. The date of the event is 24th April and the site - the drifting station of Barneo.

The interest in the match is huge, Fetisov says to TASS. The International Hockey Federation and the Olympic Committee both support the project, he claims. Invitations have been sent to former top players from a number of countries and some of them have reportedly already confirmed their participation.

Extreme sports event have previously been held on the polar ice sheet, but never an ice hockey match of this kind.

It seems to me that the Barneo 2019 Arctic ice camp may well not last until April 24th? To be frank, when it comes to "extreme Arctic sports" I reckon the GWC Arctic Basin Big Wave (Fantasy?) Surfing Contest stands a better chance of actually happening in 2019:

The 2019 North Pole Marathon has been cancelled, allegedly for "political" reasons:

https://explorersweb.com/2019/04/11/politics-puts-north-pole-skiers-marathoners-on-ice/

Quote
Political tensions between Russia and Ukraine have delayed flights to the seasonal Arctic Ocean station known as Barneo. The station has been partly operational for days, but flight permits have been revoked due to a dispute between Ukrainian and Russian authorities. This has ended any chance of the Ukrainian-owned Antonov-74 aircraft ferrying passengers north from Longyearbyen, on the Norwegian arctic island of Spitsbergen.

I do not find it unlikely that it was genuinely for political reasons, I mean, have you seen Donetsk and Luhansk lately?

basically i started to think 2-3 years ago how long they will continue with that even since it became more and more difficult = costly = stressy to find a decent ice floe that will last longer than a few days before they had to move on.

while there certainly still exist floes that last long enough and are big and thick enough it became more and more difficult to find them reliably, became kind of a lottery and they lost more often than they won in the recent past.

they will probably have to come up with a successor-event from a swimming platform that is suited to perform the same or similar research without depending on stable floes.

Videos of the ice this year looked bad when they first landed. I'm not surprised they called it off. I wonder if the political haggling was an excuse to fog the reality that the ice wasn't suitable for occupation this year.

Actually they couldn't bring a plane back some years ago... it went through the ice.
This forum helps me to feel less uncomfortable about "doing something" about the melting Arctic and the warming world.

There's still no hard news concerning Barneo 2018 .However there has been this brief report in The Independent Barents Observer:

the IBO revealed that, :

Quote
As vanishing Arctic ice makes it increasingly difficult to uphold research activities in the highest Arctic, Russia moves ahead with plans to build a research platform for the region.
The projected self-propelled platform will have top-level ice protection and be able to move autonomously around in Arctic waters for up to three years, Minister of Natural Resources Sergey Donskoy told RIA Novosti.

The active development phase is to begin before June this year and construction will start in 2019, Donskoy confirms.

Looks like they did not build the floating barneo in time.
