Finnish snows as of yesterday (in centimeters, multiply by 4/10ths to get inches): quite a lot in Lapland, almost normals (still abit below I think) in the middle, southwest and south, not so much normal. I think I've not seen temperatures below -9 C yet in my place (clear night NnW winds @ 0400 AM)

"Long shadows of spring", a friend on their cottage in southwestern Finland.

We've had 6 episodes of minimal snow here this winter, possibly this is the last one. Friend and wife though have to come back to city to take care of their elderlies, so total isolation here is not possible.

Sea Surface Temperatures are currently about 2 C above the 1971-2000 normal across practically all the Baltic Sea.

Sea surface temperatures are still running between 2 and 3 C above normal over much of the Baltic Sea.

Recent chart for 231120 shows a tiny bit of new ice has formed at the very top of the Gulf of Bothnia.

But further south the Gulf of Finland is very warm.

The Baltic took its time freezing up this year but in recent weeks both the Gulf of Finland and Gulf of Bothnia were starting to freeze up - something which hardly happened at all last year.

However in recent days the record warm air across much of Europe has spread north and taken its toll on the ice in the Gulf of Bothnia. (Finland top right/Sweden lower left)

Having downloaded the Wipneus data files I find that there is Baltic Sea sea uce area and extent data. So here are the graphs.

What I find interesting is that from the 1980's to the 1990's there is a collapse of winter ice. But after that decadal averages are pretty stable although yearly variations are high. Also the period of zero ice does not seem to lengthen.

Now could that apply to the 14 seas of the Arctic that we look at all the time?

Thanks Gero, interesting graphs.

Baltic Sea is very different from the Arctic Ocean but the lesson to be learnt here is that change isn't always linear.

My take on the graph is that since the 1990's the Baltic Proper on average no longer froze in winter. Gulf of Bothnia, Gulf of Finland and the northern and eastern coastal areas still froze because they are less saline, shallower and located further north.

Past two winters Sea of Bothnia and large parts of Gulf of Finland and Gulf of Riga remained ice free. If this becomes a trend we can expect 2020's average to deviate from the winter average from 1990's to 2010's.

After many years of reading i finally feel i can contribute!

Swedish met. office published a really interesting article about the refreeze in the gulf of Bothnia a month ago. It included measurements from research ship Svea that showed an increasing build up of heat. Bad weather also seem to have the effect that the heat gets stirred up, slowing the refreeze.

The time of measurement was 7th of dec. 2020.

IMO this means less ice and more snow for the Swedish north coast. The big question is if this translates to the arctic seas.

With masking affects evident up to 0.02 km^2 of area and 0.03 km^2 of extent commenting on more than near the peak is not evidence based. With the higher noise level in a single years data then a decade average comparing them is tenuous at best. I am always looking for trends that may not be evident yet. Considering the data I do not believe one can conclude more than area and extent in the 1980's were significantly higher than the following decades.

Having said all that the trend is probably there its just the evidence is not. I feel somewhat hypocritical writing this post as I have spent significant effort trying to say renewable growth is or is about to dramatically increase with even less evidence.

It looks a lot like less ice in the Baltic means more snow inland. Örnsköldsvik is solving the the lack of ice by adding a lot of snow to the sea. More than 1 meter in the city center apparently means a lot of issues. Article in swedish.
