Well, I still don't have found why, but it seems that some members have trouble when the upload png files.

When it happens, can you please try this trick and post the result back below ? Thanks !

- when you upload a png image, you get a 'Connection was reset" error - or perhaps a message ""your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow"
- just try to upload a jpg (or a gif ?) image
- then try again with the guilty png file.

It did work on my tests... but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks for helping with your results !

Hi DM,

I don't know if this is related, but I just had a problem attaching some .JPGs to my latest post. The message I received was:

Quote
An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.

Then I tried a .PNG instead, which at least seemed to upload the image. However then I saw:

Quote
No data received
Unable to load the web page because the server sent no data.

Any suggestions about how to get around this issue?

P.S. After some random experimentation I eventually got things to work. See http://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php?topic=262.msg4752#msg4752

I'm not sure which steps (if any!) were significant though!

Tried a couple times to upload a gif (640kb) last night -- browser just hangs.
Tried again this morning with a slightly smaller file (528kb) -- same results.
But, was able to upload a jpeg!
Then tried again on the smaller gif file -- still no luck.
I have "never" gotten an error message (except some time ago when I made a second attempt on a post I thought hadn't made it through, and got a message that this had already posted).

Bugger!

Another image - couldn't be uploaded by another user NOR me, seems to be OK now !!

Edit : I could upload it tonight, while it was impossible this morning. I changed a parameter after managing to find its purpose, so it's not entirely by chance ;) . OR it might be related to the load on the server, or time ??

Please report any problem with images here.

Hi Dungeonmaster,

I have solved the problems I had previously with uploading attachments. The problem only occurs when uploading with HTTPS. If I switch to HTTP, my session is preserved, and the uploading problem does not occur.  ???

I just now tried to upload a PNG image with my "NASA_ICE Q&A tweet" post, and the attachment was just ignored (in Preview).  I saved the image as JPG and tried again, same results.  (Using https:)

Hi Sigmetnow,

If you just use HTTPS to login in, and while reading personal messages, all the other operations work well over plain HTTP.

OK, I'll try this using http.

PNG file selected, but it's not showing under Preview.

And I've added the jpg version -- still not showing under Preview.

But -- is showing up when posted!  Hunh.

I've upload an animated GIF and it's not being animated, even after clicking on it. Any ideas?
It was created in Gimp and its size is 4.5 MB

Oren, big animated gif's just do not always work. I usually fiddle a bit, cutting it slightly smaller or reduce the number of colors and exporting again. 4.5 Mb is rather big, but not impossible.

May be it is because, the system cannot load the frames by the time you have define !? try also to increase the time of exposition. Last time I had a 7.5 Mb file with 33 frames and 750 ms between them and it did work fine.

Can the Forum be updated to allow jpeg images, in addition to jpg?

The latest iOS apparently stores images as jpeg now, and I get an error message if I try to post them here, via http or https.
(Currently, my workaround is an app that converts to png format. :-\ )

Thanks for your help!

Test.

Tried to test, can't upload it either. Weird. I've unchecked everything that has to do with security checks.

DM, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but found this on the SMF forum (from a long time ago, 2010):

Quote
This error message usually springs up in a previously functional PHP script when the memory requirements exceed the default 8MB limit. Don’t fret, though, because this is an easy problem to overcome.

To change the memory limit for one specific script by including a line such as this at the top of the script:

ini_set("memory_limit","12M");

The 12M sets the limit to 12 megabytes (12582912 bytes). If this doesn’t work, keep increasing the memory limit until your script fits or your server squeals for mercy.

You can also make this change permanently for all PHP scripts running on the server by adding a line like this to the server’s php.ini file:

memory_limit = 12M

(was looking out for a webP image converter, and stumbled on this while looking at the JPEG XL type.)

Save webP as PNG or JPEG (Converter)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/save-webp-as-png-or-jpeg/

(and this looked interesting)

MConverter - File Converter: AVIF, JXL, WebP, 7ZIP

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mconverter/

(this has been working for me as a ad helper on Utube, without triggering ad-blocker issues)

(stumbled upon these when looking for a way to convert webP images to post here)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/save-webp-as-png-or-jpeg/

Convert any image (WebP, AVIF, etc.) to PNG or JPEG (with choice of quality) for downloading. Right-click context menu calls up format options overlaid on the image.

(and this looks interesting, can do bulk)

MConverter - File Converter: AVIF, JXL, WebP, 7ZIP

Extension features:
➡Right-click on most images, videos, and audio players to extract their displayed files and convert them. For example, you can right-click on WebP images and save as JPG by quickly converting them.*
➡Click the toolbar icon to see all "from" and "to" formats
➡Start typing "Convert ..." or "Convert to ..." in the address bar and you will see a list of file formats as suggestions. Click or hit Enter on any of them to quickly convert that type of files.
See YouTube video demo

MConverter web app features:
✓ Convert files between most video, audio, image, e-book, office & archive formats
✓ Batch convert large files up to 2 GB**
✓ No full-screen ads
✓ Drag and drop folders, in addition to files

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mconverter/

PS. This plug seems to work great, and doesn't trigger ad block issues on Utube

the save webp as png addon above may be adding a Razer mouse driver to get the R click ability)

also:

MlCHEL1234 commented Mar 7, 2024

If you read the description of this addon for Firefox, you will realize that this addon only converts the webp image to jpg and doesn't lownload the original-jpg from the server. So you still have the webp format with its known disadvantages.

However, this is probably not desired by most users.

As a result, the partially high-quality jpg content is increasingly being replaced by the low-quality webp content, almost secretly through the back door. You then only have an image in jpg format, created from a webp and considerably and uselessly inflated during the conversion, because it contains no additional information, or rather, considerably less information than the original.

This addon is therefore completely useless.

As is known, a jpg image is usually always kept on the server (in parallel) and converted to webp on request and then transmitted. Why doesn't this addon bypass this action and download the original jpg? Then this addon would make sense.

Otherwise it just wastes RAM. With garbage like this you will eventually shut down every computer...

It would be very interesting to hear what the developer has to say on this subject!

Hi Michael, Yes, this extension is a converter. I don't think that is hidden, considering its name on the Add-ons site is "Save webP as PNG or JPEG (Converter)." It works similarly to the built-in screenshot tool, but offers a choice of output formats.

If you want to try to get JPEG from the server, you have a couple options:

On this extension's button bar, click the IE button. This will re-request the image masquerading as an old browser.
Try my other extension https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/dont-accept-webp/. Some servers do not care whether the browser says it wants WebP or not, as you can see in the reviews for that extension, so requesting as IE may still be needed with those servers.

I know in the long run I should merge my three image-related extensions, but they work very differently so I'm not looking forward to it.
