Do i see that correctly that there is a correlation between drift speed and ice concentration? It would make sense, higher wind speeds would also produce cracks/leads.

Interesting because viewing quality appears much better when scaling down even with higher compression. File size is not that much larger.

Great animation. The UH graphics are so much better and informative than anything else, and are like a breath of fresh air on the melting season thread when posted there.
However, only gifs can be had there unfortunately.

I open with Fiji (ImageJ), add slices at the end, and paste the last image a few times, then export animated gif. This works easily and appears as if the last image has a longer delay.

A. You are right.
B. Compression is much more efficient when frames are identical.
C. Quick and dirty methods are quick, an advantage I like.

Tidal gif and another,
Kassy "The Arctic Ocean Surface Currents Analysis and Forecast system uses the HYCOM model at 3 km resolution forced with tides at its lateral boundaries, surface winds sea level pressure from the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). HYCOM runs daily providing 10 days forecast. The output variables are the surface currents and sea surface heights, provided at 15 minutes frequency, which therefore include mesoscale signals (though without data assimilation so far), tides and storm surge signals."
I've put these both up on tides for now I'll take out the giant and leave a link later

I don't think longer tails works so well. Drift can be abrupt and the tails soften it.

Getting there johnm33. ImageJ will make it easier to add dates. Fiji automatically installs many useful plugins.

They show up more here as I'm attempting to show very low concentration. Here is a comparison with the default LUT, which I like a lot aesthetically, showing how much lowest concentration is not really visible. Perhaps there is an issue with how reliable detection is at that low level.

I like the visual clarity of that. Can be expanded a bit? Lets say you could make red what is thick enough to not melt out from a certain date giving a reasonable estimate.

Interesting idea though probably more appropriate to the low conc areas. Even then, conc is not necessarily equivalent to thickness.
red is the visualisation of the peak in the pixel count. I wanted to see what it looked like. Is probably mostly clouds at this time of year.
yellow is the lowest concentration detected. The goodbye waves we see on wolrdview for example. Pretty much invisible with the default palette (which I like a lot aesthetically)

There may be more to the 99peak as I'd expect cloud pixel count to be more random, but maybe it will be over time
