Petermann Fjord Map Update.

I have added loads of images to the Petermann Fjord Map, primarily the shore line of Hall Land (north eastern shore).
Most important localities from Hall´s Grave (in Nares Strait) to Kap Egedesminde (a the top of Petermann Glacier) are covered, and more will come, I recognize most of the images are from 1984, but as the skeptics tells us it hasn't changed much , newer images is supplied by Andreas Muenchow who visited the area in 2012.
Some unofficial names are supplied by me, like First One To The Left Glacier, The Parallel Glaciers, Sankt Peders Vej Glacier, Hellerupvej Glacier(named after some streets in Hellerup, a district in the suburb of Copenhagen, and since both glaciers are located in Hellerup Land I find both names appropriate), Between A Rock And A Hard Place Glacier.

I also like to draw your attention to the inland calving that happened in 1984 or probably earlier, it is called Inland Calvin Site on the map and it is located between the tops of Steensby Glacier and Ryder Glacier in N. P. Johansen Land. It is an impressive piece of demolition work, to say it at least.

There was some discussion recently on the ASIB (I have no account there) about a geological map of Greenland showing the wikipedia map but I think there is some more precise map available because it seems Robert  Bindschadler has got one, see after 51 minutes 43 seconds.

At least Peterman and Jakobshawn seems to have access to the inland sea !
That does change things quite a bit because what will happened when a big part of that inland will melt the first layers of the ice. The ice (2miles thick) wil collapse !!!

The Greenland ice sheet is melting from below, caused by a high heat flow from the mantle into the lithosphere. This influence is very variable spatially and has its origin in an exceptionally thin lithosphere. Consequently, there is an increased heat flow from the mantle and a complex interplay between this geothermal heating and the Greenland ice sheet. The international research initiative IceGeoHeat led by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences establishes in the current online issue of Nature Geoscience (Vol 6, August 11, 2013) that this effect cannot be neglected when modeling the ice sheet as part of a climate study.

Climate change is affecting the cryosphere from above. Geothermal heat flux from below is also contributing to conditions at the base of Greenland's ice sheet, which sits atop a lithosphere of variable thickness.

Yes. We may only hope that it somehow accounts for some of the water that has been recently measured deep in the ice, and so... that one indication of the rate of change may (I hope) be less than what has been projected.  There is still increasing-loss. Those measurements (of increasing loss) are still the same of course.  It is probably a good idea for me not to jump to any conclusions but yes it would seem to indicate the potential for more basal lubrication.  It would seem to indicate that the potential for rapid deglaciation is again more likely than previously thought possible.  I hope it's just by some small amount and most of the area remains unaffected.

Here are those 186 Greenland place names as searchable text. That can done from the full scale journal graphic (http://www.readcube.com/articles/10.1029/2012GL051634) via optical character reading (http://www.sandwichpdf.com/) of the pdf.

The first column gives the location of the west side features in north to south blocks, and below them the east side landmarks.

The second column reveals a problem: lots of competing options for spellings.  These come from different languages -- West Greenlandic (Kalaallisut), Thule (Inuktun), East Greenlandic (Tunumiisut), Danish, Icelandic, Swiss, French and English.

Nordic letters such as ø, ö, æ have been anglicized here to the nearest equivalent which can cause text searching to fail.

West Greenlandic being the official language, local place names are gradually displacing Danish under the direction of Oqaasileriffik, the Greenland Language Secretariat. Yet neither Kalaallisut nor Danish is used consistently on this blog, English language press accounts, internet maps, nor indeed in the scientific literature.

The same can be said for glacier (gletscher, sermia, sermiat, sermeq, sermilik), bay (bugt), icestream (isbræ), stream (bræ), island (ø). These can be erratically fused into single words such as Dendritgletscher or Soranerbraeen resulting in more empty text searches. I'll let Espen have the final word in providing a basic glossary -- we don't need tripled up text like Sermia Dendritgletscher Glacier.

The bottom two columns alphabetize all the place names, so look there if text searching does not find a desired place name.

A nice compilation of historic place names in the Disko Bugt area by the Geological Survey of Denmark can be found at http://www.geus.dk/publications/bull/nr14/nr14_p01-13_A1b.pdf. Here are a few key names from that:

As an application of the table (see graphic), I needed the name of a glacier below Jakobshavn Isbrae whose upper melt lake zone contained a bottom freezeup feature. It turned out to be Nordenskiöld (Akuliarutsip Sermersua). That spelling, rather than Nordenskiold, worked better for finding research articles on this particular glacier. Note other glaciers with this same name are found in East Greenland, Spitzbergen and Svalbard!

Is this happening? And how fast?
The retreat is happening, but the large chunks breaking up recently seem more like frozen sea ice than land glacier? (so if it is mostly frozen sea ice breaking up recently won't increase sea levels, although the rest of it piling in from land will)
just wondering how imminent this is. The frozen sea ice was already floating on the sea. Anyone know how much of the land ice is spilling in.

I was looking for a map with place names for the north-northwest corner of Greenland and came upon this detailed Wikipedia map.  It appears to not include places like Oodaaq/Oodaap Qeqertaa (which may not exist any more) but looks very useful.  I also found a Mapcarta map, but place names don't exactly match locations!

That Wikipedia map you are pointing to is actually a US Navy map, they are usefull to some degree but not complete.

The Danish/Greenlandish Card Portal NunaGIS has a digital (zoomable)  map with official names recognized by "Stednavnenævnet i Grønland" and if you zoom you really get a lot of names. More than 30 000 names.

Nice, but the map is missing a lot of information, glaciers for instance are either only named in Greenlandic or the historical name or many completely missing, and fast ice / ice sheet positions / glacier retreat / and rare surge positions are from the 1970ties

Abstract. Place names in Greenland can be difficult to get right, as they are a mix of Greenlandic, Danish, and other foreign languages. In addition, orthographies have changed over time. With this new data set, we give the researcher working with Greenlandic glaciers the proper tool to find the correct name for glaciers and ice caps in Greenland and to locate glaciers described in the historic literature with the old Greenlandic orthography. The data set contains information on the names of 733 glaciers, 285 originating from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) and 448 from local glaciers and ice caps (LGICs).

(maybe a silly question): Why is this topic "sticky" but not the much more important ones like "Greenland SMB/melting", "Nares Strait" or "What's new in Greenland?" ?

Good question.
Map with place names is sticky so that whenever a new glacier is updated, one can easily find its location.
What's new pops to the top when there is something new, so no need to sticky.
Greenland melting and SMB does deserve a sticky. As for Nares, it's my favorite Arctic location and I am not impartial, so would prefer to hear a couple more nays or ayes.

If this thread was not a sticky it might disappear to page two since it won´t be updated that often.

The other ones easily stay up because they are the hotter topics so it is not necessary to sticky them but there is room to do so in this subforum so either way would be fine.
