For 5.25.2020, the NSIDC northern hemisphere sea ice area single daily value is 9.736833 millions of square kilometers. This is an increase of 65,683 square kilometers from the previous day.

For 5.25, this is also the largest single daily increase of NSIDC sea ice area on record.

     2020 is 2nd lowest on record.

Bering Sea: Great losses of 10% of the ice area every day since May 20th.
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

For 5.26.2020, the NSIDC northern hemisphere sea ice area single daily value is 9.699547 millions of square kilometers. This is a decrease of 37,387 square kilometers from the previous day.

For 5.26, the daily value is 22,453 square kilometers more than the 5.24 value.

Even with average losses over the next 3 days, the NSIDC 5 day trailing sea ice area metric will show losses significantly below average.

A modest increase in sea ice area loss, while extent loss accelerates.

But starting the coming Tuesday afternoon warmth spreads north in Central Canada, starting with the Hudson and reaching the Central Canadian Arctic shore by the weekend, with Southern Greenland perhaps getting very warm on occasion. This is in addition to the Siberian heat and above zero temperatures over much of the Arctic Ocean continuing.

I predict a lot of sea ice reduced to liquid. Flaming June?

Bering Sea Ice loss still impressive - although there is not much left. Since May 20 around 10% of the remaining sea ice are is lost every single day.

Another significant increase in the daily northern hemisphere NSIDC sea ice area value. 2020 now has more sea ice area than 2019 for the date.



The 5.31.2020 value is now 26,753 square kilometers of sea ice area more than the 5.24.2020 value.

With average NSIDC sea ice area losses, the trailing 5-day average will show 2019 zoom past 2020 within the next 4 days.

This is also the 2nd daily record gain in NSIDC sea ice area, in the last 7 days (5.25 & 5.31).

Gerontocrat normally uses the more appropriate 5-day average data from NSIDC.
Weatherdude88 uses 1-day data (when it suits his agenda of gains and recoveries).

Semimonthly BOE evaluation.

As of May 31st, extent is 10,834,476 km2. With on average 105 days to go until the end of the melt season on September 13th, we now require a daily drop of -93,662 km2 for a BOE to occur. (See Attachment 1).

Total extent loss so far this season is -3,613,165 km2. This has resulted in the current average daily drop of -40,597 km2. Since the year 2007, this is the 4th highest average daily loss from maximum to April 30th (2007-2020). (See Attachment 2).

Total extent loss from maximum is 1st highest on record since 2007, knocking 2016 from lead in this metric. (See Attachment 3).

Looking only at the month of May, 2020 lost -1,792,544 km2, nearly 200,000 km2 more than the 2007-2019 average. This is the 2nd largest loss since 2007, behind only 2010. (See Attachment 4).
And, given a story to enact in which the world is a foe to be conquered, they will conquer it like a foe, and one day, inevitably, their foe will lie bleeding to death at their feet, as the world is now.

The following section is for what the previous years would have needed for a BOE to occur: From June 1st to each years respective minimum, our current BOE requirement is the 6th lowest value, of which 2016 is the leader. (See attachment 2).

This looks very suspicious to me, that black line taking off like that. I would assume that this was an errror in the data unless proven otherwise.

No mystery here. The NSIDC algorithm can see wet ice or melt ponds as loss of area, thus local surface freezing or snow can increase concentration. Besides, there is a reason why they use 5-day averaging - the data is known to be noisy. In general, I would appreciate if posters don't feed into wd88's posts.

That is one of the main advantages to using extent instead of area - less noise.

A sea ice area daily gain of this size at this time of year is likely to be a record-breaker.

The one day data sets give invaluable where the trailing 5-day average is headed. Especially if there are varying considerable 1-day values about to drop off the 5 day trailing mean.

We are able to see the trailing 5-day average has had 2 consecutive days of sea ice area gains in prime sea ice melt season. The significant change in the 5-day trailing mean was inevitable given the substantial sea ice loss daily values dropping off combined with the record gains in the most recent daily values.

Additionally, there are other member that post different 1-day sea ice data values.

No agenda, just raw data.

I appreciate the raw data. Last year when the area losses took off in June, Neven provided the information letting us know we had two days in a row of 200K+ area losses.

When we see unusual anomalies in the 5 day average, there is a natural curiosity about the daily number.

For 6.2.2020, the NSIDC northern hemisphere sea ice area single daily value is 9.775282 millions of square kilometers. This is an increase of 4,964 square kilometers from the previous day.

For 6.2.2020, the daily value is 98,188 square kilometers more than the 5.24.2020 value (10 days).

The change from the previous daily value, over the past five days are as follows:

+43,574 (5.29)
-35,428 (5.30)
+86,619 (5.31)
+53,058 (6.1)
+4,964 (6.2)

Four out of the past 5 daily values have recorded an increase compared with the previous day.

It looks like we have exceeded the daily average SIE loss just once in the last 12 days.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  10,731,898 KM2 as at 03-Jun-2020

- Extent loss on this day 34k, 7 k less than the average loss on this day (of the last 10 years) of 41k,
- Extent loss from maximum on this date is 3,716 k, 421 k, 12.8% more than the 10 year average of 3,294 k.
- Extent is at position #4 in the satellite record
- Extent is  173 k MORE than 2019,
- Extent is  381 k MORE than 2016,

On average 33.1% of melting from maximum to minimum done, and 103 days to minimum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining melt (of the last 10 years) would produce a minimum in Sept 2020 of 4.08 million km2, 0.90 million km2 above the 2012 minimum of 3.18 million km2.
