JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  9,436,977 KM2 as at 24-Jun-2020

Something must have gone badly wrong at NSIDC. The data for the 24th June has been significantly changed in the data files for the update produced on the 26th.

e.g.
total area loss according to NSIDC data for the 24th June produced on the 25th = 34k,

total area loss according to NSIDC data for the 24th June produced on the 26th = 60k,

So the data and tables produced by the sweat of my brow that were attached  are completely useless, of value Sweet FA.

Hence this edit is deleting the data from this post, from whence it will be consigned to the Vale of Tears to join most of Humanity's achievements.

June 25th, 2020:
     9,348,063 km2, a drop of -88,914 km2.
     2020 is 2nd lowest on record.
     Highlighted 2020 & the 4 years with a daily lowest min in Sept. (2012, 2019, 2016 & 2007).
     In the graph are today's 15 lowest years.

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

4 NSIDC Area Graphs

The CAA did hit the dogleg, but at an area between 75 & 100k less than "normal". When will area loss resume - still very warm to hot in the region.

Russian Shore ...
The Kara Sea continues to shed sea ice area at a high rate. The Eastern end where ice remains is still warm while the Western end, where ice is gone, looks cool.

The Laptev Sea ice area flirts with #1 & #2 position, currently #1. It looks really hot there.

The ESS sea ice area has stalled & gone into reverse. One more day's increase and 1990 becomes the year at #1.
It looks COLD in far Eastern Siberia.

Thanks for keeping us so up to date, day by day.
I am still looking for seas that lose 10% of their ice area over several consecutive days - so far without "success".
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

The really below average area losses in the peripheral seas remain - despite the warmth & oftimes real heat  in and around Hudson Bay & The Greenland Sea. Aluminium's gifs seem to show most times sea ice is still being pushed into the Greenland sea from the CAB, offsetting warmth from the south melting the ice .

Even if a bit late, Hudson Bay will completely melt out. The Greenland Sea final result will depend on the strength of ice import.

A significant change from being #1 early in the melt season to this day at #9.

NSIDC PERIPHERAL ARCTIC SEAS - ICE AREA:  1,196,081 KM2 as at 27-Jun-2020

- Area loss on this day 38k, 6 k less than the average loss on this day (of the last 10 years) of 44k,
- Extent loss from maximum on this date is 3,555 k, 211 k, 6.2% more than the 10 year average of 3,344 k.
- Extent is at position #9 in the satellite record
- Extent is  96 k MORE than 2019
- Extent is  151 k MORE than 2016

On average 76.9% of melting from maximum to minimum done, and 73 days to minimum

Slow extent losses - even though large parts of the Arctic remain extremely warm. Maybe this is due of lack of winds encouraging compaction, while thinning and reduction of concentration of the ice continues?

NSIDC did it again. Posted a revised set of spreadsheets later in the day with significantly different data. Nothing to do but delete all the data as it is WRONG.

NSIDC Data errors Twice in the last week NSIDC have made major revisions to the data on their spreadsheets later in the same day the data was made available. (It was data for the 23rd and 28th June).

Because of this, and because my lousy internet connection is usually at its worst during the early afternoon, from now I will not be posting NSIDC data until at least 6 p.m. GMT. Hopefully any revised spreadsheets will have been uploaded by then.

Evaluation of sea ice area "relative area wise" June 16-June 29.
There are two laggards:
CAB        - 4%
Beaufort  - 7%
Three seas with a slow decrease:
ESS         - 14%
Chukchi   - 18%
Grønland - 20%
Among the faster seas are:
Barents   - 26%
CAA         - 29%
The leaders are:
Laptev     - 32%
Baffin       - 35%
Kara        - 38%
Hudson    - 39%
Okhotsk, Bering and St. Lawrence were not evaluated (they almost melted completely)

If the weather forecast charts posted in the melting season thread are anything  like correct, the answer must be surely be a big YES.   (but... so many times, sigh.)

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  8,918,818 KM2 as at 30-Jun-2020

- Extent loss on this day 131k, 51 k more than the average loss on this day (of the last 10 years) of 80k,
- Extent loss from maximum on this date is 5,529 k, 442 k, 8.7% more than the 10 year average of 5,087 k.
- Extent is at position #2 in the satellite record
- Extent is  118 k LESS than 2019,
- Extent is  55 k LESS than 2016,
- Extent is  121 k LESS than 2012
- Extent is  551 k LESS than 2007

On average 51.1% of melting from maximum to minimum done, and 76 days to minimum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining melt (of the last 10 years) would produce a minimum in Sept 2020 of 4.05 million km2, 0.88 million km2 above the 2012 minimum of 3.18 million km2.

I also attach the June monthly average extent graph. The average turned out at 9.96 million km2, just 52k (almost exactly one year) below the linear trend value of 10.01 million km2. This is 2nd lowest i the satellite record - 2016's early melt in May to early June made it the record breaker.

Semimonthly BOE evaluation.

As of June 30th, extent is 8,918,818 km2. With on average 75 days to go until the end of the melt season on September 13th, we now require a daily drop of -105,584 km2 for a BOE to occur. (See Attachment 1).

Total extent loss so far this season is -5,528,823 km2. This has resulted in the current season average daily drop of -46,461 km2. Since the year 2007, this is the 6th fastest average daily loss from maximum to June 30th (2007-2020). (See Attachment 2).

Total extent loss from maximum is 3rd highest on record since 2007 --- 2010 and 2012 had monster Junes. (See Attachment 3).

Looking only at the month of June, 2020 lost -1,915,658 km2, averaging -63,855 km2 per day. This is the 8th largest loss since 2007. (See Attachment 4).
And, given a story to enact in which the world is a foe to be conquered, they will conquer it like a foe, and one day, inevitably, their foe will lie bleeding to death at their feet, as the world is now.

The following attachment is for actual previous years daily average melt from June 1st to their respective minimums. (Attachment 1).

The following section is for what the previous years would have needed for a BOE to occur: From July 1st to each years respective minimum, our current BOE requirement of -105,584 km2 is the 8th lowest value, of which 2010 is the leader. (See attachment 2).


As an aside, for those holding out hope for a BOE to occur, we must melt ~143% of 2012 every day until the minimum.
For the few votes in the 2-2.5 million km2 JAXA daily poll we must average between -92,251 and -85,584 km2 or ~125% to 116% more daily melt than 2012.
And, given a story to enact in which the world is a foe to be conquered, they will conquer it like a foe, and one day, inevitably, their foe will lie bleeding to death at their feet, as the world is now.

NSIDC Sea Ice Area - random observations.

The contrast between the sea ice area in the High Arctic (2nd lowest) and the Peripheral Seas (13th lowest) is, if anything, increasing. It may all end up largely depending on the balance between ice export from the Central Arctic into the Greenland Sea.

The Laptev Sea melt continues apace.

The Central Arctic Sea is suddenly losing a lot of sea ice area - i.e. melt is nibbling away at North of 80.

At this point, 2020 is putting the leap year advantage to good use. 2019 would be ahead in extent using info which is based on a comparable # of days melt.

Very high area & extent losses look to be guaranteed for at least 2-3 days more.

The NSIDC daily extent count just hit it's lowest ever for this day after a double century break of 200K. It's now 8.942km2 (2012 in column AK)

I don't post here because my lack of scientific knowledge, but I've been lurking for years. I'd like to give a quick thank you to Neven, Gerontocrat, Friv, Blumencraft, Oren and a whole bunch of others for keeping me updated.

[EDIT]: RETRACTION: I have forgotten to take into account leap years. Comparing day 185 with all day 185's, I find 2010 is lower with 8.938km2. I too now stand of the bridge of sighs...
