Gero, that’s awful news. I’d like to contribute, too. It would be a small price to pay for my daily numbers fix!

NSIDC daily sea ice area: 2020 is lowest on record for the date, basically tied with 2012.

I created the graph using data from Wipneus' site.

Ranking of the NSIDC daily area values for 4th August:

My God gerontocrat! That's awful. I wish you have made backups.
Perhaps we from the forum could each give some money for you to buy a (2nd hand?) laptop.

I wish you strength with the sudden hole in your life/routine.
A virtual hug from me.
Good Idea,
All right, Nanning, if anyone opens a pot to help Gerontocrat, I'm in.
+1. Ditto.

I'm in if someone will organize it. Perhaps Gero can let us know what kind of equipment would serve his purposes and perhaps you have a paypal account or something similar easy to send some funds.

DON'T BE SHY you deserve any help from us who benefit for so long from the great efforts you made.

Will be able to buy a supercomputer at this rate, i use a rubber keyboard for spills and a desktop is safer and easy to upgrade compared to a laptop with two monitors is nice. Great this is sorted and Matt can get on with his great job we all appreciate your awesome work.

Thanks to all.

It will be done ASAP.. hopefully normal service resumes early next week.

Matt Greenwood, aka gerontocrat.

Almost donated as I get the idea. My backspace key won't work, and I haven't work in years so a new laptop is a scary budget item. But I see the "goal" has been met, and I have anonymity issues.

Still, sending love regards your dedication and effort. It is appreciated.

For what little it's worth, my last laptop has a dead keyboard and monitor and power port, but I cracked the case to solder on a new wire so I could power it up, use an external monitor and keyboard to transfer files to a USB drive and save years worth of scripts and data that are, oddly, dear to me. Think I"ll back up some of my current laptop soon.

Maybe I'll catch the next person whose dog's exuberance spills the coffee (my late Newfoundland Dog was named Java, still miss him). Apologies for rambling, but again, know that even those who didn't pony up this time appreciate your work.

I am surprised of how weak the Arctic sea ice looks, but at the end, the extent drops have been lower than average.
Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Have had a reverse dipole for like 10 days.(just guessing, at least a week.  We're lucky we have even seen three drops we have.

Drops are about to pick up a lot tho.

Gerontocrat: Congratulations that you got a new laptop & it is great that you accepted the gift. The ASIF would not be the same without you!

An now, I invite everybody to think on Neven. He has been running this place and the ASIB for 10+ years. I don't know how much it has cost, but I am sure that it has been expensive to develop and maintain.

To donate, you have to go to Neven's ASIB and click on "Support & donate" on the circle on the right side.

Thanks! We are a great team!

HI Gero just donated something towards a new USB wireless keyboard and mouse. Put plastic cover over your laptop keyboard - then the next time the dog spills it's coffee over it (I can just picture it reading your posts avidly while sipping on an early-morning latte) you only have to replace the USB keyboard.

To whoever manages the fundraiser: Please stop it before we in the Old World react to the first pleas for donations and keep piling the money in!

UPDATE

The fundraising was very successful! I never imagined we can pull this kind of thing off, but here we are. I want to thank everyone. You folks are just awesome! Of course, the GoFundMe page will stay up for a little since it's not even up for 24h (we are not even around the globe with this).

I will hand over the campaign page to Gero later for him to withdraw the funds.

When the GoFundMe site is offline and you still have some spare bucks, please follow Juans advice and donate to the forum.

I'm humbled and honored to be a part of this awesome community.

Special thanks to Be Cause and Greylib!

Just retweeted the page as I have no cash but lots of followers.....

I'm sure any 'excess' funding can be diverted to the needs of the Forum once Gerontocrat is sorted out?

For 8.5.2020, NSIDC northern hemisphere sea ice extent single daily value is 5.86 millions of square kilometers. This is an increase of 77,000 square kilometers from the previous day.

Sea ice extent is now in third place for the date.

Sea ice area is now in second place for the date.

The trailing averages should reflect the change of the trajectory of the 2020 northern hemisphere melting season in the next several days.

This should come as a surprise to no one.

It is likely JAXA sea ice extent will fall into third place within 2-3 days. 2019 and 2012 have some significant sea ice extent decreases the next several day.

I added the monthly extent value for July 2020 into my long-term plot where I calculate the extent anomalies from 1979 up to now.
The average (1979-2020) July extent is now 9.13 M km². July 2020 had an average extent of 7.28 M km², which is 1.85 M km² less than that long-term average and the lowest on record so far.
The much higher than normal losses in July 2020 pushed the actual value below the red long-term linear trend line by 0.66 M km² (calculated from the linear trend line this July should have been at 7.94 M km²).
The slope of the long-term linear trend line has become steeper by two digits (-0.0551 instead of -0.0549).

See attached graph.

August 8:    5,390,893 km2. Almost a century drop, down 98,161 km2.

5,459,062 - 5,390,893 = 68,169

The 2-day change is a decrease of 98,161 square kilometers of sea ice extent on JAXA.

Here is the 1-day change of the AMSR2 concentration map in a .gif file format.

NSIDC daily area is currently 3.47 million km2, which is second lowest for the date.

It is 0.33 million km2 above 2012, 0.10 million km2 below 2019, 0.21 below 2016, and 0.48 below the 2010s average.

Area has been dropping slowly in the last few days, at an average rate of -0.02 million km2 per day during the last 5 days.

The area anomaly (relative to the 1981-2010 average) is currently -1.90 million km2.

For 8.8.2020, the NSIDC northern hemisphere sea ice area single daily value is 3.473803 millions of square kilometers. This is a decrease of 13,048 square kilometers from the previous day.

The change from the previous daily value, over the past five days are as follows:

-73,057 (8.4)
-780 (8.5)
-30,586 (8.6)
-4,347 (8.7)
-13,048 (8.8 )

Area losses continue to be below average. With the daily extent loss of -115, compaction increased on this day.

Area is in 2nd place for the date, and may fall to fourth place within the next 2 - 3 days.

For 8.11.2020, the NSIDC northern hemisphere sea ice extent single daily value is 5.579 millions of square kilometers. This is a decrease of 16,000 square kilometers from the previous day.

2020 is now in fifth place for the date. 2020 now has more sea ice extent for the date, than 2007,2012, 2017, and 2019. 2020 may fall into sixth place in the next 2 days, as 2016 has some significant losses the next several days.
