Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Hi gerontocrat, where do you get the daily NSIDC area data?  I found all the extent data here https://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/sea-ice-tools/ but cannot find the area data even in any of my google searches.
You need to ask Nico Sun - posting as Tealight.
He posts it on a graph every day at  https://cryospherecomputing.tk/

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Hi everyone! I came back from my vacation.  :)

[ADS NIPR VISHOP (JAXA)] Arctic Sea Ice Extent.

September 28th, 2020:
     4,076,912 km2, a small increase of 6,128 km2.
2020 is 2nd lowest on record on this date.
     Highlighted 2020 & the 4 years with a daily lowest min in Sept. (2012, 2019, 2016 & 2007).
In the graph are today's 10 lowest years.
     Source: https://ads.nipr.ac.jp/vishop/#/extent

P.S. It looks like 2020 will be the second lowest on all days in September.

[ADS NIPR VISHOP (JAXA)] Arctic Sea Ice Extent.

September 30th, 2020:
ADS is 25 minutes late in their update.
I will check again in 20-30 minutes.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  4,140,211 KM2 as at 30-Sep-2020

- Extent gain on this day 24k, 25 k less than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 49k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 585 k, which is 35 k, 6% less than the 10 year average of 620 k.
- Extent is at position #2 in the satellite record
- Extent is  268 k LESS than 2019,
- Extent is  900 k LESS than 2016,
- Extent is  339 k MORE than 2012
- Extent is  287 k LESS than 2007
_____________________________________________
On average 6.2% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 162 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 13.45 million km2, 0.43 million km2 below the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.

If this is the outcome it would be astonishing given that the long-term linear trend for reductions in the sea ice maximum is at a very slow rate.

JAXA Arctic Sea Ice Extent... some more

First image attached is the September monthly average graph. The average daily extent was 2nd lowest in the satellite record at 3.78 million km2,
-0.38 million km2 greater than the 2012 record low of 3.40 million km2,
- 0.37 million km2 than the 2019 value of 4.15 milliion km2.
- and 0.41 million less than the linerar trend value or 4+ years ahead of that linear trend.

The second image looks at daily change from September to December - average, 2019, 2016 2012, and 2020 to date. Last year refreeze was very slow in the first 3 weeks of October. The result was the October daily average extent was the lowest in the satellite record. However from late October 2019 extent gain accelerated to well above average. Will 2020 follow a similar path? if it does there is a good chance that sometime in October 2020 daily extent will be lowest in the satellite record, espcially as 2012 daily gains were at or above average in October.

The third image is the October monthly average graph, with the 2020 data assuming average extent gains. In this case the October 2020 monthly average would be slightly above the 2019 record low, but below the 2012 average.

The 4th image is the plume - just because I like that graph.

Could be an interesting month.
