JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  6,548,425 KM2 as at 30-Oct-2020

- Extent gain on this day 285k, 177 k more than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 108k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 2,994 k, which is 612 k, 17% less than the 10 year average of 3,606 k.
- Extent is at position #1 in the satellite record

- Extent is  828 k LESS than 2019,
- Extent is  373 k LESS than 2016,
- Extent is  970 k LESS than 2012
- Extent is  1,469 k LESS than 2007
- Extent is  1,364 k LESS than the 2010's Average
_____________________________________________
On average 36.4% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 132 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 12.86 million km2, 1.02 million km2 below the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.

For the 2020-21 maximum NOT to be a record low, remaining extent gain has to be more than 16.2% above the average remaining extent gain of the last 10 years. This is greater than any of at least the last 13 years.
______________________________________________________
This seems to be 2020 following 2019 (and 2012 and 2007) but just a a few days later.

2 more days of +200k daily sea ice extent gains would see 2020 extent toppled off its #1 perch by 2016.

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  6,779,529 KM2 as at 31-Oct-2020

- Extent gain on this day 231k, 115 k more than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 116k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 3,225 k, which is 492 k, 13% less than the 10 year average of 3,717 k.

- Extent is at position #1 in the satellite record

- Extent is  745 k LESS than 2019,
- Extent is  187 k LESS than 2016,
- Extent is  876 k LESS than 2012
- Extent is  1,343 k LESS than 2007
- Extent is  1,249 k LESS than the 2010's Average
_____________________________________________
On average 37.5% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 131 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 12.97 million km2, 0.91 million km2 below the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.

For the 2020-21 maximum NOT to be a record low, remaining extent gain has to be more than 14.7% above the average remaining extent gain of the last 10 years. This is greater than any of at least the last 13 years.
____________________________________________
If daily sea ice extent gain on 1 November is greater than 260k, 2016 sea ice extent becomes lowest in the satellite record.
If daily extent gains gradually moderate over the next few days to something like average for the time of year, 2020 could retain the #1 position.

JAXA Data
- October Monthly Averages

Despite the last few days of very high daily extent gains the monthly sea ice extent average for October is more than impressive, building on the impressive 2019 data.

The October 2019 average of 5.48 million km2 was a record low, 0.15 million km2 less than the record low of 2012.

The October 2020 average of 5.05 million km2 is 0.43 million km2 less than 2019, and 0.58 million km2 less than 2012.

Two record lows in succession in October is unique in the satellite record. The 2020 value is 0.99 million km2 (or 11 years) below the linear trend value. Climate scientists have been telling us that we should expect reductions in sea ice extent to push later into the year. Is 2020 telling us the shape of things to come?

- Daily Change
I also attach the graph of daily sea ice extent change, using the 7 day trailing averages which shows the patterns more clearly. It is showing that at the moment 2020 daily change is rebounding as in 2007, 2012 and 2019, but a few days later. Will November show the catch-up continuing as in 2019, or will....

NSIDC Area data - a bit more

The October monthly averages sea ice Area graph attached shows that the October 2020 average of 3,96 million km2 is lowest in the satellite record. It is
- 440k km2 less than 2019,
- 297k km2 less than 2016, and
- 423k km2 less than 2012.

What will happen in November?

NSIDC High Arctic Seas - extent graphs

Given that 2 seas are nearly out of play, attnetion focuses on the other 5 seas of the High Arctic until freeze gets properly going in the peripheral seas.

The Chukchi, ESS, Laptev and Kara are all showing very strong extent gains dspite relatively high SSTs.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  7,268,936 KM2 as at 02-Nov-2020

- Extent gain on this day 277k, 159 k more than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 118k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 3,714 k, which is 217 k, 6% less than the 10 year average of 3,931 k.

- Extent is at position #2 in the satellite record

- Extent is  535 k LESS than 2019,
- Extent is  102 k MORE than 2016,
- Extent is  559 k LESS than 2012
- Extent is  1,133 k LESS than 2007
- Extent is  985 k LESS than the 2010's Average
_____________________________________________
On average 39.7% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 129 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 13.23 million km2, 0.64 million km2 below the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.
_________________________________________________
In the last 5 days extent gain is 1.25 million km2. As a result, for the 2020-21 maximum NOT to be a record low, remaining extent gain has to be a much reduced 10.8% more than the average remaining extent gain of the last 10 years.

This did happen in 3 of the last 10 years. The last 5 days extent gains have brought 2020 extent back into the pack.

NSIDC daily extent at 4 November 7.822 million km2.
NSIDC daily extent at 3 November 7.822 million km2.

This usually means that NSIDC has a problem, usually fixed later in the day or on the following day.

So no post by me yet.

Largest anomaly ever measured

I added the monthly extent value for October 2020 into my long-term plot where I calculate the extent anomalies from 1979 up to now.
The average (1979-2020) October extent is now 7.91 M km². October 2020 had an average extent of 5.29 M km², which is 2.62 M km² less than that long-term average, and more than two sigma below the average (this does not happen frequently).
The belated refreeze in October resulted in a record minimum. Therefore the anomaly from the long-term linear trend line is very large, in fact the largest ever measured, even below the anomaly measured in September 2012. The difference of the actual month from that trend line is -1.37 M km² (calculated from the linear trend line this October should have been at 6.66 M km²).
The slope of the long-term linear trend line has become again steeper by five digits (-0.0560 instead of -0.0555).

See attached graph. Click to enlarge.

NSIDC User Services, Nov 5, 2020, 13:26 MST:
Hi Matthew,

Thank you for contacting NSIDC. We are working on a technical issue that prevented the daily sea ice data from processing today. We hope to have data processed by the end of the day. Once the data are processed, the sea ice extent maps will update as will the numbers.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused by the technical issues.

Best regards,
Lisa

Daily NSIDC extent remains 2nd lowest on record to Nov 5th.
The rapid increases appear to have passed their record breaking peak (peak rate was 265,000 km²/day, current rate is 227,000 km²/day), but are still way above average for the time of year.

NSIDC Extent Graphs

with the Beaufort and CAA full up ice, the seas on the Russian side have taken over (apart from the Barents but including the Chukchi).

The Atlantic Front -

I wonder for how long the Central Arctic region will resist the advance of sea ice to 80 north
I also wonder if the Kara sea ice gains will stall (currently rapidly increasing)
I wonder how ice-free the Barents will be this year.

Graphs from NSIDC data

The Central Arctic sea ice edge seems very reluctant to advance to 80 North from Svalbard to the North Islands. The Barents refreeze is also currently on hold.

This is in marked contrast to 2019.

Daily NSIDC data saw a small drop, -17k, on Nov 6th. It remains 2nd lowest, 105k above 2016.
The centred 5 day mean change is dropping rapidly, but still highest for the time of year.

Meanwhile, the cumulative extent anomaly remains lowest on record up to this point, and is already the 3rd largest annual cumulative anomaly too
