Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

Hudson Bay with a 68k 5-day trailing average daily extent increase is more than impressive.

To partly reinforce Oren's post on the Freezing thread - here are graphs of extent and area for the 7 seas of the High Arctic and the 7 peripheral seas.

High Arctic sea ice extent is lowest, but High Arcctic sea ice area not quite lowest - probably using the 5 day trailing average just delays the inevitable by a couple of days. This is mostly due to slow refreeze in the Chukchi plus recent sea ice losses / low gains in the Kara and Central Arctic.

Sea ice area and extent of the peripheral seas is not lowest, extent 6th lowest, area 9th lowest. This is mostly about very high sea ice gains in Hudson Bay & the Greenland Sea.

JAXA Data - a bit more

The November monthly average graph is attached.
At 8.68 million km2, the average is
- 2nd lowest, nearly 300k above 2016 (lowest)
- more than 300k below 2019 (3rd lowest),
- and 367k below the linear trend vlaue, equivalent to about 7 years annual average extent reduction.

If December extent gains are at the aveage of then last 10 years, the December monthly average, at 10.87 million km2, would be lowest in the satellite record by 130k, some 329k below the linear trend.

I also attach the plume of projected 221 maxima and the daily change for selected years to March 2021.

NSIDC Data - a bit more

I attach the table of High Arctic Seas area data.

These three seas are currently losing sea ice area.
- You will se that despite that Laptev extent is 100% complete, area is not. Winter sea ice is starting to show signs of fragility.
- The Kara area graph is stunning - less than half the ice area of the 2010's average.
- The Central Arctic is still not quite reaching 80 North.

The Atlantic front looks like being the event of this freezing season at least until until the new year?

ps: The Barents sea ice area and extent are both currently lowest in the satellite record

Gero, didn't this daily post use to be about area? There seems to be some duplication with the previous post. Is the extent chart the same as the one in that post? Whatever happened to the area chart...?

Also, it looks like there were large areas of missing data and loads of false coastal ice in the latest daily extent image, particularly in the Sea of Japan and Gulf of St. Lawrence. I suspect that these have also added to the massive daily increase. I'd expect a steep downward correction tomorrow.

I recently joined the twitter thing, where I post more analysis, pics and animations: @Icy_Samuel

I wrote in a recent post that during the melting season area loss was the leading indicator, while in the freezing season extent gain was the leading indicator.

So I said I was switching to extent data for the freezing season - but with a proviso, that if area in individual seas behaved oddly I would post the area data.

What can one do ? add an explanatory note every day?

Look at the Laptev data
Extent 100% done

NSIDC Graphs

While the Greenland accumulates sea ice (mostly from export?) the Kara for the last 3 weeks has overall been losing sea ice.

Quite a contrast

[ADS NIPR VISHOP (JAXA)] Arctic Sea Ice Extent.

December 3rd, 2020:
     10,147,633 km2, an increase of 62,174 km2.
2020 is 2nd lowest on record.
In the graph are today's 10 lowest years.
Highlighted the 5 years with daily lowest minimum on September.
2007 has not official value. Average used.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  10,147,633 KM2 as at 03-Dec-2020

- Extent gain on this day 62k, 4 k less than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 66k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 6,593 k, which is 346 k, 6% more than the 10 year average of 6,247 k.

- Extent is at position #2 in the satellite record

- Extent is  119 k LESS than 2019,
- Extent is  150 k MORE than 2016,
- Extent is  492 k LESS than 2012
- Extent is  352 k LESS than 2007
- Extent is  437 k LESS than the 2010's Average
_____________________________________________
On average 63.2% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 98 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 13.78 million km2, 0.10 million km2 below the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.

After 2 days of extreme gains, are we back to moderate gains for a bit?
