Extent animation for the week.

Extent increased by 729,000 km² (81-10 avg 638,000km²)
I recently joined the twitter thing, where I post more analysis, pics and animations: @Icy_Samuel

On average 64.0% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 97 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 13.73 million km2, 0.14 million km2 below the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.

Which is the best answer to Sep-2012 ASI lost (compared to 1979-2000)?
50% [NSIDC Extent] or
73% [PIOMAS Volume]

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

So far in December the days of above average extent gains are more above the average than days of low extent gains are below the average. So overall extent gains are returning to above average - see 2nd attachment.

JAXA Data

I attach the December monthly average graph based on actual data to Dec 15th and assuming 10 year average sea ice extent gains to the end of the month.

The resulting extent of 11.11 million km2 would be 2nd lowest in the satellite record, 0.11 million km2 above the record low of Dec 16, and 0.31 million km2 less than Dec 19.

I added the monthly extent value for November 2020 into my long-term plot where I calculate the extent anomalies from 1979 up to now.
The average (1979-2020) November extent is now 10.45 M km². November 2020 had an average extent of 8.99 M km², which is 1.46 M km² less than that long-term average.
The rapid freeze-up in November reduced the anomaly we saw in October from the long-term linear trend line. The difference of the actual month from that trend line is -0.36 M km² (calculated from the linear trend line this October should have been at 9.36 M km²).
The slope of the long-term linear trend line has become not changed since October (-0.0560).

See attached graph. Click to enlarge.

In addition I present the volume anomaly graph (second graph, click to enlarge). It looks much smoother than the extent anomaly graph.
It is too late just to be concerned about Climate Change

50% [NSIDC Extent] or

Volume is harder to measure than extent, but 3-dimensional space is real, 2D's hide ~50% thickness gone.
-> IPCC/NSIDC trends [based on extent] underestimate the real speed of ASI lost.

On average 73.0% of extent gains  from minimum to maximum done, and 85 days to maximum

Projections. (Table JAXA-Arc1)

Average remaining extent gain (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in March 2021 of 13.98 million km2, 0.11 million km2 above the March 2017 record low maximum of 13.88 million km2.

I was thinking about how low the maximum could be, and now start to think about how high the maximum could be.

The strong clockwise winds assciated with that very large anticyclone squatting on top of the Arctic ocean has pushed ice westwards along the Siberian coast. As a result sea ice area in the East Siberian Sea is down by 83k in the last 7 days.

This, and the recent reduction in the very high Greenland Sea area and extent, are the only exceptions to the general rapid increase in extent and area.

Extent: 11,562444 km2
Gain of 144,467 km2

5th lowest in the satellite record. Could only last a day. Could move down to 6th.

2016:  11,295,762 km2
2017:  11,546,507 km2
2019:  11,553,665 km2
