Never , Uniquorn .. that looks to be the realm of admin , not moderator . I really hope you and everyone else don't need to know there is moderation happening .. and I could never imagine you needing moderation except in your enthusiasm for keeping us all so well informed and visually stimulated ! b.c.

Hi Neven - just another heart felt thanks from a long time lurker who has visited daily for the past 7 years. I think the delegated moderation team is the perfect evolution for this forum.  I hope you can find more time in your garden as for me I find to be very therapeutic when the issue of AGW and life in general becomes over whelming.

I've been AFK for a lil' bit. Just skimmed thru this thread. Wow!

Neven, good stuff for doing what you did. I've been there myself - total burnout after being a website forum mod / admin for a number of years. It was a music-related site, whose (private, invite-only) forums peaked at just over 100,000 users during my tenure. Even now, years later, I can barely be bothered to check out new music etc., it burnt me out that bad. I should have stepped back much sooner.

I sincerely hope your timing is much better than mine was.

I'd throw my hat in the ring, but, yeah, see the above. And I do not have enough time for it. It's still tempting because of how much I value this place - although truth be told I don't really care much at all about anything outside of the Cryosphere section of the forums, and ASIB/G.

The mods I see now are fine by me, and I'd love to see any of the more regular contributors from the Cryosphere section in there as well. (gero, juan, alum, abrupt, uniq, et al.) That of course is without me seeing any of their posts in political threads, haha.

I'd also vote kassy purely for her taste in music. Because that's important, goddammit.

A comment from the "Lurker" basis.
Thank you Oren and Blumenkraft for stepping up to do the moderation and thank you Neven for staying on as administrator.
You all have my full support and trust.
I hope you will not have too many conflicts to resolve and will snip judiciously so that we all remain on topic.

I think the person who takes over should be a real person with a real name, and a portrait photgraph.

And no one is taking over which you could know if you read through the whole thread.

Neven stays admin and the mods are your janitors.

Also preferred workload is zero.

There is not that much work especially if people stay on topic (and you can always use the OT OT thread). Off course that is most important for the main threads. ASI data thread is for data or discussion thereof so when in doubt put it in the current melting season.

And discussion of the timing of a BoE can be put in the BoE thread or When will the Arctic go ice free thread instead of the 20202 Melting Season and that eliminates most of the work. TIA!

And i would like to be allowed to fight (snip) racism (of which there is too much on the forum IMHO).

I think your definition of racism is pretty skewed. Your heart is in the right place but you are hypersensitive about it. I remember the drama in this thread where you ended up calling Archimid a "nazi handmaiden" for merely pointing out the fact that there are certain medical differences between genetic populations, such as sickle cell prevalence: https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,2996.msg249684.html#msg249684

If these are the kinds of posts that you would label as racism and remove, then I am against you being admin, if I am being honest.
Seconded. Seen other hysteria.

Neven leaving was a shock, and yes my first thought was that ASIF would not survive and that the stake would be so high, almost unachievable,  to find a suitable person at the helm to step in his shoes. It seems, an arrangement has been found with the highly respected Oren part of a new triumvirat, and Neven still on board in some way, hoping the transition will, hopefully, run smoothly.

I discovered ASIB in 2009 and have been a shy ASIF member since 2013 with a few sparse posting here and there. Despite I have rarely been involved into politics in my posting, Gerontocrat is right to say that everything related to the climate and environmental challenge is highly tainted with politics and now Climate and Biodiversity scientists are more and more involved into the political arena, ( e.g. the long list of UK University scientists listed as sponsor of Extinction R, just an example among others). Post Covid 19 it will be the case even more than ever, we can already see the debate mounting in Continental Europe, and there could be a fierce fight between the dangerous green washers de facto defending the status quo to preserve their egotist and selfish interests and the push for a new policy putting human survival and  well being as interdependent to the earth environment, climate and biodiversity...but I understand the challenge of moderating political discussion on ASIF.

A huge thank you to Neven for his exceptional talents, his highly interesting, informative and captivating posts on ASIB, and his capacity for moderating ASIF with the right touch and "doigté" for such a long time.

I can confirm that the image isn't photoshopped, since I have met Neven and his family in what passes for "real life".

Another suggestion: open a ”forum moderation” thread so mods can direct all moderation related off topic comments there.

Just to add my tuppenceworth … MANY thanks Neven over the years - it can't be easy & must take a lot of time.

Arctic Sea Ice is a great daily update on the key climatic driver(s) as the world changes so fast.

Its great if the many threads can stay on topic - so we can look at the ones we want (and ignore the ones we don't want to read).   I admit I do go elsewhere for e.g. politics / Coronavirus etc.

Whoever takes over - best of luck - "Bon Courage" - Oren & co-moderators and I am really pleased you can step up to the plate - it's a testament to Neven's hard work  - and even handed moderation - that the forum has retained so many great contributors, and indeed still welcomes both newbies and experts (real and claimed).

Good idea to spread the load - and I guess if other specialist areas crop up - maybe others with the skills / knowledge base could cover them, since moderating a thread does need a good understanding of it.  As you may have guessed from my "handle" I had many years in the oil industry for example - though now (happily) out of it !

All the best Neven!

I wouldn't do that. I don't believe that the work of the moderators should be discussed by the members.
i would understand such a thread only if is it private for the moderators.

For complaints about moderating i would point to the 'Forum Decorum' thread.

Also, suggestions should be posted there, and not in the thread that yields the suggestion.

Of course, praises are welcome there as well.  ;)

Congrats on the decision to evolve.  Now that a decision has been made, perhaps this thread can be locked and relevant discussion can move to Forum Decorum ??

Yes, it is all set up now. Thanks everyone for the thanks and the suggestions. I don't think all that much is going to change, so it seems the future of ASIF is secure for some time to come.

Welcome on board, dear new Moderators. I wish you all the best and I fully trust and support you. You can reach me if necessary.

Of course I was Member 1 on this forum. First I wrote some lines, and I still do about expeditions and crazy people venturing up there in the North, but now I'm mainly a reader - when I'm not overwhelmed with information.

I only manage the technical stuff (smart and cheap solutions only, usually work on their own...), and every time I was asked or tempted to moderate I would probably have messed things badly - Neven always made good and wise decisions.

Most of us had guessed that Neven would get tired some day. Life, family, work... things move on and we all have to change and adapt. I'm very grateful and admirative and thankful for the huge work he has made in this place, a second home for many of us. Again, thank you Neven - you made the right decision. And, just enjoy being quiet!

Dears members, dear readers, it's not an end - just a new start. Enjoy this forum, enjoy life, vita brevis!

(and I confirm that only Neven and I can see your IPs. But I'm an expert on Privacy, so it should be ok)
This forum helps me to feel less uncomfortable about "doing something" about the melting Arctic and the warming world.
