Siberia
« on: May 12, 2013, 06:13:47 PM »
The purpose and the title of this topic has been changed.
Siberia: huge area, scarce information. Let's gather some.

Interdisciplinary curriculum: Siberia and the Circumpolar Arctic

Lena River  is the easternmost of the three great Siberian rivers that flow into the Arctic Ocean.
Spring is already at the rivers source in the Baikal Mountains, and wildfires too.

Living in the Taiga:

(Agafia)
At   8:02: Position of Agafia's House.
At 18:04: "When you meet a person here, you are happy because you feel you can help them ... It's the taiga's way.
There are no bad people in the taiga. Most bad people are where a lot of other people are. They can steel there."
At 20:30: "I would not be able to live in the city ... You can hardly breathe."

Huun Huur Tu. Dangyna (Siberian Shaman Music).

...I was wondering if spring burning of slash and stumps may be intentional...
The Siberian Times article, 11 May 2013, says:
"'The blazes have been caused by careless handling of fire by the local population and agricultural burning,' said the regional forestry department."

At NASA page we read:
"These hotspots have been categorized as wildfires rather than agricultural fires by the website: http://fires.kosmosnimki.ru/."

Whatever the reason, the result:

If you are touched by Agafia's story, I am, here is The Smithsonian article, January 29, 2013.

Ivica, Spring burning , while the ground is still wet ,can open up forest understory to grasses and forage for wildlife. It was a practice of local indigenous tribes in California to improve habitate for game. In a world not gone mad with fossil fuel consumption it can be thought of as a cycle . Plants uptake Co2 from the atmosphere ,burn and complete the cycle.  The photo of the (Cranes?) looks like the fire wasn't so hot that it killed the adult trees.   Fire suppression allows thick understory to build up and dry fall conditions allow fire to kill trees and burn into the ground.   I don't know if fire was utilized the same way in Siberian culture as it was here but many traditions of the American indians can be traced back to Siberian origins.                                                   Kelele funk70

Remark: I doubt that the photo is about this year's fire but expression is appropriate. Attached:

Ivica, if you're interested in Siberian wildfires you may like to see Chris Hadfield's picture tweeted from the ISS on 29 April.

Most early recorded cultures regarded the Golden Eagle with reverence.

As the man in the video says you can hunt anything with them.

Today's MODIS Arctic Mosaic picture shows a fairly obvious smoky smudge in the upper right corner.  Focusing in on this area, and using the false-color images, we can see some rather impressive fires, not terribly far from where some of last year's worst fires could be seen.

I fear we may soon see another dramatic drop in ice sheet albedo.

Not far from Siberia:
Zooming upper-right corner in Worldview Arctic projection you will notice 10*15 km2 green area surrounded by desert. I wondered what is that - that is potassium chloride factory in Lop Nur.  (Google Maps zoom down to 20 m.)

That reminds me on other 'success' of Human Engineering:

, description:  "1925 Aral sea region"

BTW: Clear sky over today.

EDIT: 2015-05-01, video/music add about Aral, .

If they (the mindset that rules over us) are any good, why are we in trouble?

Taiga is too cold for me and I sympathize with this people: Farm life of African family in Russia is "beyond bad dream".

Tundra, even colder but some people enjoys that: .
