Armed troops in Portland, Oregon, are taking people prisoner in the streets while refusing to identify themselves as law enforcement and operating out of civilian vehicles. No one on scene knows what jurisdiction or capacity they are operating in, or what happened to the person taken into the van.

The Ahmaud Arbery killers plead not guilty.

This is close enough to a police killing as the defendants are claiming they were trying to make a citizen's arrest (of an innocent black man).

Portland “police” caught shouting “LEAVE NO EVIDENCE BEHIND” as they pick ammunition rounds up from the ground. Earlier in the protests, police were seen picking up tear gas canisters to hide how much they have been gassing protestors.

I would love to see what would happen if the protesters stayed home for a week in protest to the gestapo violence. What would they do then? Now the protesters are giving the gestapo what Trump and Fucks news want.

Trump Is Putting On a Show in Portland
https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2020/07/trump-putting-show-portland/167203/

The president is deploying the kind of performative authoritarianism that Vladimir Putin pioneered.

The very idea seems, on the face of it, sheer madness. In Portland, Oregon, federal security officers dressed for combat—wearing jungle-camouflage uniforms with unclear markings, carrying heavy weapons, using batons and tear gas—are patrolling the streets, making random arrests, throwing people into unmarked vans.

Unsurprisingly, these troops are making rudimentary mistakes. Instead of working with local leaders, they have antagonized them. Instead of coaxing people to go home, their behavior has caused more people to come out onto the streets. Instead of calming the situation, they are infuriating people. They have escalated the violence. They have made the situation worse.

... Welcome to the world of performative authoritarianism, a form of politics that reached new heights of sophistication in Russia over the past decade and has now arrived in the United States. Unlike 20th-century authoritarianism, this 21st-century, postmodern influence campaign does not require the creation of a total police state. Nor does it require complete control of information, or mass arrests. It can be carried out, instead, with a few media outlets and a few carefully targeted arrests.

... The chaos in Portland is not an accident. The chaos is the point.

The chaos is also a tactic, and now it will be put to use. Now that it has been deliberately escalated, the violence will provide pictures, footage, video clips, and other material for Trump’s media supporters, and eventually for his campaign advertisements. On Fox News, Sean Hannity has already denounced Portland as a “war zone.” Tucker Carlson has spoken of protesters as “mobs” who keep liberal Democrats in power. The next stage will implicate Joe Biden in this same story: The president’s aides have told journalists that Biden, if he wins, will “allow left-wing fascists to destroy America.” Protesters, mobs, chaos, fascists, the left, the “Dems”, Biden—they’re all one narrative. The Trump administration will show people pictures of its uniformed troops pushing back against them, restoring order with a strong hand. And it will use the kind of language that appeals to that part of the population that prizes safety over all else.

Students of modern dictatorship will find these tactics wearily familiar. Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom Trump admires, has deployed performative authoritarianism, alongside other tools, in order to keep himself in power for many years now. ... Russian state television showed scenes of violence over and over again—scenes that Putin himself had helped create, first by encouraging the former Ukrainian president to shoot at demonstrators, and then by invading the country. He sent troops in unmarked uniforms—the infamous “little green men”—into Crimea and eventually eastern Ukraine to “dominate” the situation, to use Trump’s own word for his tactics in Portland. Or at least that was the way it was meant to look on TV.

... Just this week, Trump’s official Facebook page published an advertisement purporting to show yet another scene of American urban violence. The slogan reads public safety vs chaos & violence, and the ad contrasts a photograph of a somber, concerned Trump with another showing demonstrators pummeling a police officer. But the latter image was not taken in Portland. Sourced from the internet, it was taken in … Ukraine. In 2014. In the ad, which is attributed to Evangelicals for Trump, the insignia on the officer’s shoulder includes a Ukrainian Orthodox cross.

There were 66 vehicle-ramming attacks against activists by right-wing terrorists  across the country in the nearly six weeks immediately after the police killing of George Floyd in late May. The New York Times reported that eye-opening stat on July 7. It’s a tactic that began in the West Bank and was employed by Hamas about a decade ago. ISIS followers picked it up later, terrorism scholar Mia Bloom wrote in Just Security on July 16.

Revealed: Oil Giants Help Fund Powerful Police Groups In Top US Cities
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/27/fossil-fuels-oil-gas-industry-police-foundations

Investigation portrays fossil fuel industry as common enemy in struggle for racial and environmental justice in America

Big corporations accused of driving environmental and health inequalities in black and brown communities through toxic and climate-changing pollution are also funding powerful police groups in major US cities, according to a new investigation.

Some of America’s largest oil and gas companies, private utilities, and financial institutions that bankroll fossil fuels also back police foundations – opaque private entities that raise money to pay for training, weapons, equipment, and surveillance technology for departments across the US.

The investigation by the Public Accountability Initiative, a nonprofit corporate and government accountability research institute, and its research database project LittleSis, details how police foundations in cities such as Seattle, Chicago, Washington, New Orleans and Salt Lake City are partially funded by household names such as Chevron, Shell and Wells Fargo.

Report: https://news.littlesis.org/2020/07/27/fossil-fuel-industry-pollutes-black-brown-communities-while-propping-up-racist-policing

Police foundations are industry groups that provide substantial funds to local departments, yet, as nonprofits, avoid much public scrutiny.

So they did find out that the guy who started the first building on fire was basically a Nazi (part of some gang with Aryan in the title).

I find myself more and more saying the line from Indiana Jones: "Nazis, I hate these guys"

"A force de chercher de bonnes raisons, on en trouve; on les dit; et après on y tient, non pas tant parce qu'elles sont bonnes que pour ne pas se démentir." So much this:

I love the symmetry of this logic and how one may apply that (ie judging multiple groups by the same metric).

Also (not to defend them) cops are humans like the criminals and in my experience cops are as much the criminals as the public....  Why are so many people blind to that?   I can understand the want and need for a savior-force (just as with the tooth fairy) but what makes people delude themselves that it's actually possible or REAL?

True.  Cops are no different from anyone else, and should be held to similar standards.  Unfortunately, many cops (and this applies to people in many other professions also) are given a break compared to the general population due to their line of work.  When someone in the underclass or menial job gets accused of wrongdoing, the onus is on them to prove otherwise.  When a similar accusation occurs to someone in a higher position, they are presumed innocent, and their accuser must show proof.  Should not everyone be granted that same benefit.  Recently, a provost at the University of Michigan has been fired due to sexual misconduct.  Allegations began to surface in 2003, but were brushed under the table in order to avoid tarnishing his reputation.  His reputation in research, diversity, and inclusion clouded the eyes of those who would investigate such accusations.  Had he been on a lower rung, I suspect these accusations would have received a much closer look.

MINNEAPOLIS – A medical examiner’s finding that George Floyd had drugs in his system when he died is a “red herring” designed to draw attention away from the responsibility of a Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for several minutes, even after he stopped moving, an attorney for Floyd’s family said Tuesday.

Michelle Obama: 'I'm just devastated by the shootings in Kenosha'
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/aug/28/michelle-obama-kenosha-shooting-wisconsin-jacob-blake
  by Kari Paul

Exerpts:

In a lengthy statement released on Friday, the former first lady condemned the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Wisconsin man shot seven times in the back by police in front of his children, as well as the shooting of three protesters by an alleged 17-year-old rightwing militant in the protests that followed.

“I’m just devastated by the shootings in Kenosha,” she wrote. “Like so many of you, I’m exhausted and frustrated right now. It’s a weight that I know Black and Brown people all across the country are shouldering once again. And we’re so often left wondering how things will get better.”

“These protests and actions will not make Jacob Blake walk again. They will not erase the trauma from those children. And they will not bring back anyone who’s been taken from us. But they will do something. They already are – opening eyes, rattling consciences and reminding people of all backgrounds that this problem wasn’t solved earlier this summer and it won’t be any time soon unless we all make a change,” she said.

I think it's business as usual Freegrass. But now, since the uproar from the murder/killing of George Floyd (and earlier racist killings), the attacked and oppressed people (in their own country) are not taking it any longer. Nothing's changed and the right-wing violent extremists and government seem to be on the same side.
Perhaps they should bond with the first nation people and hispanics.

edit: but I agree that it's convenient for re-election purposes (fear).

Ketamine That’s Injected During Arrests Draws New Scrutiny
https://apnews.com/a872ba9aeeba2f5b0624f8af77f928d3

DENVER (AP) — Police stopped Elijah McClain on the street in suburban Denver last year after deeming the young Black man suspicious. He was thrown into a chokehold, threatened with a dog and stun gun, then subjected to another law enforcement tool before he died: a drug called ketamine.

An analysis by The Associated Press of policies on ketamine and cases where the drug was used during police encounters uncovered a lack of police training, conflicting medical standards and nonexistent protocols that have resulted in hospitalizations and even deaths.

On Monday, it will have been a year since McClain, 23, was stopped by officers responding to a 911 call about a suspicious person wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. Police put him in a chokehold twice and multiple officers pressed their body weight into him.

Paramedics were called and injected McClain with ketamine, but they incorrectly estimated his weight, giving him more than 1.5 times the dose he should have received. He got 500 milligrams because they thought he weighed 220 pounds, but he was only 140 pounds and should have received 315 milligrams.

He suffered cardiac arrest, was later declared brain dead and taken off life support.

... There are no federal standards for law enforcement or emergency medical personnel on the drug’s use. State policies and reporting requirements vary, so it’s not clear how regularly it’s used during police encounters and why.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists opposes it and other sedatives for law enforcement purposes, saying, “These effects can end in death when administered in a non-health care setting without appropriately trained medical personnel and necessary equipment.”

There were 902 reported instances of Colorado paramedics administering ketamine from 2018 to 2020, and almost 17% had complications, including cardiac arrest and oxygen deprivation, the state health department said.

Charges Filed Against Militia Members Traveling to Kenosha
https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/09/04/politics/militia-members-kenosha/index.html

Two members of the 417 Second Amendment Militia group from Missouri traveling to Kenosha, Wisconsin, were arrested Thursday by federal officials and charged with illegally possessing a cache of weapons.

FBI agents found in their hotel room an Armory AR-15 rifle, a Mossberg 500 AB 12-Gauge shotgun, two handguns, a silencer, ammunition, body armor, a drone, a twisted cable survival saw, a dagger and other materials, prosecutors said. They each have criminal records and were not authorized to have any firearms of ammunition, prosecutors said.

Their criminal complaints contained screenshots of Karmo's Facebook page where he posed in all black attire and in one photograph is allegedly holding a gun with a laser.

They traveled by car to Kenosha to "see for themselves" what was going on at the protests, attended a "Make America Great Again" rally and planned to go to Portland to "take action" if police were defunded, according to Karmo's criminal complaint.

Insensible before the wave so soon released by callous fate. Affected most, they understand the least, and understanding, when it comes, invariably arrives too late

Georgia deputy filmed punching Black man in front of children is fired
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/sep/13/georgia-deputy-punching-black-man-traffic-stop-roderick-walker
by Associated Press in Atlanta, Georgia

(59s)

 Excerpts:
Roderick Walker, 26, was arrested and beaten on Friday, after deputies pulled over the vehicle he was riding in with his girlfriend, their five-month-old child and his stepson for an alleged broken taillight, attorney Shean William said on Sunday.

The deputies asked for identification, Williams said, then demanded Walker get out of the vehicle when he questioned why they needed it since he wasn’t driving.

The subsequent arrest, captured on video by a bystander and shared widely, shows two deputies on top of Walker, one repeatedly punching him. Walker’s girlfriend screams and tells the deputies Walker said he can’t breathe. A child in the vehicle yells: “Daddy.”

As Walker is handcuffed, the deputy who punched him tells the bystander Walker bit him. Williams said his client denies biting the deputy. Walker was trying to survive and lost consciousness at least twice during the beating, Williams said. A photo of Walker taken in jail showed a welt under his left eye.

“My reaction to the video is that it just shows unfortunately another incident where an African American male’s civil rights have been violated by people and officers and law enforcement who have the duty first to protect and serve,” Williams said.

Why did police stop and search Bianca Williams and Ricardo Dos Santos?
Stop and search of two athletes in London renews concerns about police powers

https://www.theguardian.com/law/2020/jul/06/why-did-police-stop-and-search-bianca-williams-and-ricardo-dos-santos
  by Jamie Grierson

Excerpts:

What happened?

Williams and her partner, Dos Santos, were stopped as they were driving a Mercedes in Maida Vale on Saturday.

Video of the incident, posted by Linford Christie on Twitter, showed officers telling Dos Santos and Williams, who were travelling with their three-month-old son, they were going to be searched. Williams is heard repeatedly saying: “My son is in the car.”

Williams, 26, a European and Commonwealth relay gold medallist, and Dos Santos, 25, a Portuguese 400m record holder, have said they fear they were targeted because they are black.

..Following a search of the vehicle, the man and the woman, nothing was found. No arrests were made and the occupants were allowed on their way.

Are they able to search vehicles without suspicion any offence has taken place?

The police can search people or vehicles without suspicion under a stop and search power known as section 60. A section 60 is a power which allows police officers to stop and search anyone in a specific area without needing to have reasonable grounds.

But this did not apply in the case of Williams and Dos Santos.

Under the Road Traffic Act, police officers can stop vehicles without any grounds but are unable to search the vehicles. They are only able to ask questions of the driver and request licence details.

Stop and search powers are used disproportionately against people from BAME backgrounds, particularly black men.

In England and Wales, black men are 10 times more likely to be stopped and searched than white men. In some force areas, this is higher: police in Dorset are 25 times more likely to search black men than white men.

Can anyone refute this (except by ad hominem)?

Who Killed George Floyd?

The issue here is fentanyl.

Here's how the respected website, WebMD, describes the effects of fentanyl:

“[F]entanyl has rapid and potent effects on the brain and body, and even very small amounts can be extremely dangerous.

“It only takes a tiny amount of the drug to cause a deadly reaction,” ... “Fentanyl can depress breathing and lead to death. The risk of overdose is high with fentanyl.”

Here’s what the CDC says about fentanyl. “It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.” https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/opioids/fentanyl.html

Of course George couldn’t breathe -- because fentanyl, mixed with methamphetamines, kills breathing.  Despite the bad optics, “I can’t breathe” was not because of the officer’s knee.

Absurd obfuscation.  Opioids suppress respiratory drive.  At toxic levels, people cease feeling a need to breathe.  Nobody who stopped breathing because of opioid overdose ever said "I can't breathe."

Thanks for responding to Tom, Steve.
Tom, didn't you have any seconds thoughts when you posted that? You seem an intelligent man who wants to be a good human.

nanning, I read an article which depicted the event in a very different light. I am not a doctor so I asked if anyone could refute the points made. Can a fentanyl OD act as described? I will accept that the alleged OD would not manifest as depicted in the article.

Tom, this "very different light" is an attempt to play down the callous police violence.
Don't you see how it is doing that?
It is the same kind of "different light" that Pres.Trump shines on Portland; "it's the black protesters who loot and riot". Which in reality is the other way around; it were the federal agents and white supremacists.
Do you see what's being done?
Fighting that pattern of iies and obfuscation is one of the reasons for this thread.

Please do not post 'volatile' stuff without checking against other (trusted) sources because what you posted might be very insulting and painful for the e.g. mother of George Floyd. Focussing in this case on Fentanyl in stead of on the police violence is a racist thing to do.

What are the "trusted" sources? I posted a source which was against the main stream depiction of the event and asked for a refutation from the wisdom of the ASIF crowd, and SteveMDFP answered. He answered with a point on the data in in the article, not with a "it's not a trusted source". As for the rioting, it seems to be perpetrated by both sides, mixed in with people who are trying to be peaceful. I expect more of this violence after the POTUS election, btw, whoever wins.

I don't pretend to know all the trustworthy sources but before posting this specific article in this specific thread, you should check a bit more and realise what it is doing; what I described above.
It's trying to get the police off the hook. "Look over there". Changing the context and therefore the seriousness of what happened in the light of U.S.A. police using excessive voilence and deathly violence disproportionally on just your black/brown skinned fellow 'americans'. It is paramount that that behaviour stops and is highlighted every time. Not played down and victim-blaming.
The Guardian would never post an article like that.

nanning, did you stop to think that the posts on this thread might be "very insulting and painful" for people like, for example, JOSHUA T. MIKTARIAN's twelve year old daughter, whose father was killed when she was a baby because he made a traffic stop of an African American?
