Reading the Forum on a Computer or a Phone?
« on: August 17, 2020, 03:05:12 PM »
Do you use the computer or the phone to read the forum?

If there are other options you use please post them below so i can add them.

Poll closes in 7 days so the people who come by only once a week can vote.  ;)

Þetta minnismerki er til vitnis um að við vitum hvað er að gerast og hvað þarf að gera. Aðeins þú veist hvort við gerðum eitthvað.

Where are the overlapping options? Computer and phone because I’m addicted to ice

Either enable multiple checkboxes, or add all possible combinations, plus "Other".
I use computer and phone.

I guessed many would. But if you use both then go for the option you would choose if you had to go with one or the other.

If you read it on the phone during the day because you can´t use the company computer just vote for computer.

Computer and phone...
kudos to vox for his post quality using just a phone.
I get frustrated trying anything more than a simple sentence on a phone.

Is there a purpose behind this poll?

Anyway, computer only here.

A smartphone is not my news aggregation instrument of choice; I usually post on the PCs at the library. But with the COVID lockdown it's my plan B.

Ever since the stylus fell into the sofa 'black hole' touch-typing has been like typing with doorknobs

I was wondering about some things.

Quote
I must admit that I "miss the old days" when one of Neven's ASIB entries led to a broad, informed discussion at a fairly low pace for several days or weeks. At that time, contributors were allowed to think between their posts.

P-Maker posted this in the Melting thread.

At the time there was less information coming but we also did not have the twitter/FB reply all the time culture.

And the general culture was different. I do love those 2014 threads where page 1 is arguing some lineair thing and on page 3 it is still going on. Things became more hectic over time with more people joining and thus the conversation got more messy.

And somewhere in there i wondered about the phones.

The poll is probably not going to be that useful but at least i can strike Post a poll to ASIF off my bucket list so there is that.  :)

"Interesting discussions".
This thread has fifteen votes so far.
Can be taken as we are interested enough to read, vote and comment.

Comment made on ex lease laptop. Cheap enough that you can upgrade every four years or so over decades to stay  current with hardware and software  for less than the cost of one reasonable lap top  buying new.

I use both, Phone comuting on the train right now where I find the laptop too awkward and PC at home or sometimes at work where the graphics are easier to see .

I haven't voted because I couldn't choose one or the other.

I don’t own a computer or an I-phone .
A landline phone and snail mail are kinda relics I guess.  :)
Most everyone has an I-phone so the I-Pad column probably won’t get many votes.

Interesting Bruce. Now I am wondering how you post on and read the asif. Perhaps I'm being stupid, sorry.
I also have no mobile phone but I do have a desktop computer. I really like snailmail and have sent blum second hand wings.

Vox, that makes it even more impressive; typing with doorknobs ;)

I'm one of those weird people who doesn't have a smart phone. I firmly believe that smart phones are for dumb people, sooo...  ;) ;D

Seriously tho, I only have a desktop (high-end, self-made) and an old simple flip phone - because when I step away from this computer, I want to be disconnected and IRL only, full stop.

It's all about balance!

I added Both phone and computer as an option for those who use it about equally so they can vote too.  :)

So a follow up question are there things you cannot do on the phone? Or things you would rather do an a computer? I guess all text and graphics can be viewed fine on the tiny carry around monitor.

Checking if JAXA numbers are finally in because they were late again...i can see that. But looking at Aluminiums weekly graphs probably less so.

Editing and copy paste (e.g. making partial quotes) are a big pain on the phone. Worldview crawling, creating animations, crunching numbers to produce charts, all require computer.
Reading the forum whenever some spare minutes present themselves or when away from home, much easier on the phone.

Hap Hazard, Yes I like being disconnected when I step out my front door. So no phone. Not in the car either because I really don’t like CERE babbling away. I need to get my wife an air horn so she can find me, three blasts and come running.
In awe of the technology and loath it at the same time. If my legs were still up to it I would still spend days hiking the wilderness incommunicado.

Decent size mobile screen (6.9" minimum), Microsoft Swiftkey Keyboard and enable the arrow keys and manage your clipboard.  That makes editing and copy/pasting posts bearable.

But for all the rest, yes, you need a PC.
