From NSIDC Data - 3 sea ice AREA graphs)

The Atlantic Front continues to fascinate.
 
- The Central Arctic has lost 100k in sea ice area in 8 days, in that time moving from 15th to 2nd  lowest sea ice area in the satellite record in that time.
- The Greenland Sea has lost nearly 150k in sea ice area in 9 days, in that time moving from 21st to 3rd lowest sea ice area in the satellite record in that time.

On the other hand, the Barents sea gained over 200k in sea ice area from the 1st to the 16th of February, moving from 14th to 27th lowest in that time. Since then sea ice loss is just less than 20k, and the Barents sea ice area is still 25th lowest in the satellite.

How much is melt and freeze and how much is increased mobility is a question I cannot answer.

From NSIDC Data - 4 sea ice AREA graphs

The Atlantic Front continues to fascinate.
 
The Central Arctic, the Greenland Sea and the Barents sea continue to lose sea ice area.
How much is melt and freeze and how much is increased mobility is a question I cannot answer. It will be interesting to see what the PIOMAS model makes of it.

meanwhile - at the Pacific gateway, the Bering and the Chukchi gain sea ice area. Indeed the Chukchi has made a bit of a record. Chukchi sea ice area on this day, the 24th February, is 43rd lowest in the satellite record. i.e. HIGHEST in the satellite record.

It is difficult not to believe that the 2021 maximum has passed - at 13.98 million on the 16th Feb. But in three of the last 10 years, including last year, remaining extent gain was enough to increase extent to a new maximum.

It is difficult not to believe that the 2021 maximum has passed - at 13.98 million on the 16th Feb.

But in 4 of the last 10 years, including last year, remaining extent gain was enough to increase extent to a new maximum, and maybe there is a switch in the weather that now favours extent gains.

I attach the monthly average graph for February. At 13.78 million km2, the Feb '21 average was 220k less than Feb '20 and 5th lowest in the satellite record. It was also 198k more than the linear trend value.

I also attach the estimated March monthly average graph assuming average daily extent gains.

Today(1 March) at 15.33 GMT NSIDC posted another set of graphs. Unfortunately the data is the same as in the update on 26 Feb.

So it ain't fixed. It's been a very long time since we've had such a long unscheduled pitstop.

ps: Does not PIOMAS depend on the NSIDC area analysis as the main data input into the algorithm?

Something is very wrong there. The latest daily extent data (uploaded this morning) stops at the 21st after skipping the 20th. And the data for the 21st comes from one day in the future!?? (All the other days have the previous day's date in the file name.)

I've emailed them (very politely) to see if they are willing to tell the world a bit more of what is going on and the prospects for data recovery.

JAXA ARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  14,135,332 KM2 as at 05-Mar-2021

- Extent gain on this day 11k, 21 k more than the average loss on this day (of the last 10 years) of 10k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 10,581 k, which is 819 k, 8.4% more than the 10 year average of 9,761 k.

- Extent is at position #8 in the satellite record

- Extent is  260 k LESS than 2020,
- Extent is  505 k MORE than  2018,
- Extent is  277 k MORE than 2017
- Extent is  506 k LESS than 2012
- Extent is  63 k MORE than the 2010's Average
